The Volvo XC90 is a 7-passenger, 3-row luxury SUV for buyers that like a refined cabin, comfortable seats and engine choices. The Volvo XC90 utility vehicle is available as a T5 turbocharged 4-cylinder, a T6 turbocharged and Supercharged 4-cylinder or this T8, equipped with the same engine as the T6 but adds electrification to make it a plug-in hybrid. The T5 has 250hp, the T6 has 316hp and the T8 has 400hp. All use an 8-speed automatic and all are AWD in the Canadian market. The T8 tested here is capable of a run to 100km/h in 5.6 seconds. The design of the XC90 luxury SUV has been a standout since this model was introduced in 2015. In fact, the XC90 7-passenger crossover has won numerous awards for design bot inside and out. New for 2020 is a slight tweak to the outside grilled headlamps but not much a design change. The same interior found in 2015 is till very strong with the XC90, the simple and elegant design has stood up very well and the 9-inch infotainment screen is daily easy to use and processing speeds have improved the usability. The big question is the price of the T8 to get just 30km of electric range, adding roughly $13,000 in cost?

I bought the Volvo XC40 about a month ago, loaded with features. A great car and actually really fun to drive. Very happy with it. I felt the XC60 and XC90 was too big for my needs. What surprised me a lot is how spacious it is for being a compact SUV.

The BMW is a 2-row where Volvo is a 3-row. Volvo has very good crash results and that is due to the robust frame. Which explains why it only gets 30 clicks.
We have a Cadillac CT6 plug-in that can get 40 miles on battery which is easily covered on my 12 mile commute and running errands or going out to eat. I plug in at work for free so it has plenty of range.

Hey guys, in Europe generally, those versions are for business use because taxes are linked on CO2. That's why all competitors launch EV's, Hybrids and PHEV's... Also there is an average amount of CO2 by brand. If the brand emits more, the fine is huge...

True story. From year 2021, every car manufacturer should have an average of 95 grams CO2 emissions and the fine is 95 Euro per gram on average for every vehicle produced.

I don’t think the 30km is virtue signaling. Commute to work is 20 km. Plug in at work. Commute to mall or kids school or karate, 30 km there and back. Won’t cover road trips, but probably covers most of your mileage if you live near work school etc.

  • @corystansbury
    @corystansbury Před 3 lety +5

The Volt nailed the recipe in terms of range. It's about perfect and even here in Maine, with reduced winter range, it's all one needs the majority of the time. 30km is not worth that price premium.

  • @tfwang5649

Great review with Q&A section. In term of T8 verses T6, due to the 4 cylinder combustion engine with double charges, T8 really eliminates the engine noise of T6 at the start and low speed driving. Be aware the electric driving power is always available for low speed driving regardless the range. It helps for start/stop situation as well. Does it reduce the gas station stops? It depends on your commute pattern and opportunities to access charge stations. I personally got 2.0 L/100KM in the past two years in Toronto area where Winter is quite cold. Do we still get government's rebate?

This is exactly the prices that I suggested, with the Genesis GV80 review, as a comfortable price range for some/many people (not me). Although this Volvo design, spills over the top with it’s stoic and elegant styling. With this pricing, I believe Zack is correct. With the T6 being about 90% of the T8 ....for less than 75 cents on the dollar. That all of a sudden becomes quite the deal. Especially as you still get that little Swedish flag on the seats! Thanks for the video and have a wonderful weekend.

Thanks for this discussion about the pace of auto improvements. Realize whatever you can buy today is yesterday's technology. If you can buy it, not only will it be outdated tomorrow it is already outdated-true for computers, appliances, tools, cars, etc. So set your parameters (price, capacity, haul/tow capability, carbon emissions, projected reliability, luxury, etc.), weight your priorities, and pull the trigger. As Zack says, "today 48 km, tomorrow, 70." The possible exception is Tesla with over-the -air updates. As another CZcamsr says about his model 3, "The car I own today is far different from the one I bought three years ago. Improvements in security, power, range, battery management, features especially autonomous capailities-no other car does this." Is that true, Zack? I believe some other cars are getting upgrades through software-does that have to be done at the dealer, or are other manufacturers using over-the-air as well?

Last week, I got 50 miles on electric and 20 miles on gas, because I could not charge on a day due to electric issue. In a post-pandemic world, you no longer drive 20 miles to work. You drive your car to shopping, to school. The 20 miles range can cover 80% of that.
Somebody mentioned CT6. That’s a car, not a Seven seater SUV. I also tested BMW X5 plug in. I love the range and the new screens! But that’s a two row SUV and you can’t move or recline your second row seat!

You don't cover ride quality. It would be good to hear your review on that, especially vs. x5. For me, I think this cars biggest weakness is that ride can get choppy for said luxury car. Also agree, you buy for more power, not fuel economy.

I’ve the Inscription pro 2020 with 21 inch wheels and the ride is excellent. Can’t compare to the X5 but it beats the VW Touareg for bumps but the large wheels with low tread rubber does translate to increased road noise over the 20 inch one.

Hi. From the Netherlands here: The T8's drive like a dream. I own a 2016 XC90 T8 with all bells and whistles. The hybrid drivetrain provides very sophisticated and smooth ride. I tried the T6 and I didn't like it. With the T8 I always drive off on the electrical engine and that has instant torque. Also, it can accellerate insanely fast and torque is available at all RPM's. I come from a XC90 V8 and while this is step down, engine-wise, it is sufficient and comes quite close to V8. Of course, the V8 is unmatched when it comes to sound and smoothness of accelleration but face it: 4-bangers are the future, for all manufactureres, and at some point you will have to let go of the 6 and 8 cilinder cars..
By the way: The 407 HP are always available, not only hen you have juice in your battery. It's a very tenacious misunderstanding that I wanted to point out here :-)

Great review video from the best auto jurnalist couple ... tied with Yuri and Jakob LOL
As the owner of two T5 volvos '16 xc70 and '17 s60, I love the drive E engines, and the xc70's cabin quietness and plush ride. There has been no reliability issues so far either.
Needing a bigger vehicle, I test drove '20 xc90 T6 and T8 for a total of 400kms over six days. I must say the beatifically styled volvos were a huge disappointment in noise and ride.
2.0L four cylinder is not for luxury cars this size period no matter how you charge or tune it.
I could probably fix the ride quality issue by going with smaller wheels and higher profiled tires.
For the plug-in range, the only reason I can think of anyone buying T 8, is the HOV
lane use policy. But for that purpose, I think BMW's plugin line up is much better - adding EV capability to the lower end models rather than at the top like volvo.
As much as I want to support volvo I have to forgo it and go with X5 or GLE.

There's a limit as to when a PHEV becomes obsolete. This one was obsolete since day one 5 years ago because a gen1 Volt could muster 60km of range and it's a 2011-2012 model. After you reach the 70-100km of EV range, it doesn't matter if a new one will give you 120 because 70-100km is plenty enough. North of 100, just get an EV. Same goes for EVs. Even the 2017 E-Golf with its puny (by today's standards) 200km of range is far from obsolete because that range is more than enough. Any experienced EV driver will tell you that. Also, considering a 60k km 2017 E-Golf is still basically the same price on the used market as a brand new one with the 13k incentive in Qc, I would argue there's still a high demand for "obsolete" models

Thanks for the remark about virtue signaling, Zack. Everyone is entitled whatever lifestyle they prefer, but aren’t entitled to feeling smug about saving the Earth when they buy new luxury hybrids while living in large homes and vacationing around the world.

But we did save a lot of fuel. Now 75% of my driving is electric. Doesn’t that help the environment?

The point of my comment is the vehicle you drive is only one dimension of your global impact. The resources you consume (and the pollution generated) is also determined by other lifestyles choices, such as the size of your house and the amount of leisure travel you enjoy. I’m not making any claims about the environmental friendliness of generating electricity vs fossil fuels.

@@migy5031 I agree with you. Think about Al Gore, who received so much praise for his documentary "Inconvenient Truth" but lives in a big mansion and has his own private jet! Yeah, everyone should care about the environment except me! Typical do what I say not what I do.

I don't know how you keep saying that electric cars are just like cell phones and thats there's always a new/better one every year or two. Could you not make the same argument with gasoline vehicles too? ICE keep getting more power and efficiency so why keep knocking electric vehicles for continuously getting upgrades every year or so. I don't get your point.

Virtue signaling are you a Trumper from Canada. People want luxury but want to do there part cleaning the planet, it is the only one we have. My daughter drives 41 miles to work each week so she could drive 8 miles and plug it in each night. She is 24 with a master in Sociology from Tulane I may add and her generation is all about electric cars.

I drive Volvo's as a company car and don't consider them a luxury brand either. Top tier economy or budget brand... yes. But a luxury brand...not at all.
