Volvo is widely known for its safe vehicles. In addition to its first pure EV (the XC40 Recharge) it also gives people unsure of choosing an electric vehicle a way to dip their toe into the EV world. The XC90 T8 Recharge is a plug-in hybrid that runs on battery alone, but switches to gas power once the pack is spent. It’s all automatic, no fuss, no muss and it can seat 6 or 7. And it can be stuffed with luxury touches. Tom Voelk checks out a fully optioned Inscription model. It may be $3,550 less for 2021 but it’s not inexpensive.

Volvo is a superb brand but unfortunately it is now Chinese owned and we as Indians are trying our best to boycott things that help China earn profit. Such things aside Volvo is quality and safety in my eyes. Great video Tom!

@@normt430 and you seem to be some Chinese bot planted world-wide to defend China. We are trying our best is what I mentioned. Atleast I am. I use Samsung M51, a South-Korean brand with its factory in India (some parts maybe imported from China, hence the trying my best part). Also I use DELL which is again not a Chinese brand. Why did you have this urgent need to defend China ? On its payroll I reckon. Focus on the 'safety+quality' part of the comment. It will help you relax mate.

Being a Volvo-owner for 25 years, having them limit max speed at 112 mph, is a deal breaker for me, and I’m saddened by this fact. So I waited to hear if you were going to mention this fact. And you did)) Wow, does anything get past you?)) Meticulous review, all bases covered! Great job!!!

@@DrivenCarReviews if you’re asking whether or not I take my cars to the track where I can drive fast - the answer is no, I don’t, but highway speeds I drive at sometimes exceed 140 mph. and I just don’t want to be biting the dust behind some VW or Audi.

I really appreciate the emphasis this channel seems to have on electrified cars. Light vehicle emissions are the leading source of CO2 emissions in the U.S., and hybrids and plug-ins are such a pain-free way to work towards fixing the situation.

This is a fantastic family vehicle, not too big and has a lot of room inside. Wish it had soft close doors though

I agree that PHEVs are great stepping stones to pure BEVs. But something I rarely see discussed is the dealership’s role in maintaining a PHEV. A PHEV is carrying both ICE and BEV technology. This requires a specialized skill set. So, when your PHEV needs to be fixed, you may have to wait for the specially trained dealer tech to free up. You also are tied to having the dealer service it, as most mechanics outside the manufacturer won’t be able to maintain it. Some won’t even go near it for ICE stuff due to all the high voltage cabling. For these reasons, I’d recommend leasing a PHEV instead of buying one. Just my opinion. Or make sure your dealer is well staffed in PHEV maintenance. Others may disagree.

I don't know what you're waiting for. Volvo announced in like 2008 that they were never going to produce anything with more than 4 cylinders again
I like the interiors Volvo has- especially the S90, V90, and the XC90. I didn't realize the curb weight was so high for the XC90, though. How do these handle on curvy roads? Nice review and I always like watching to see the neighborhood. I've visited Seattle quite a bit and enjoyed my visits.
All Volvo's today are about the heaviest in respective segment.

@@normt430 I've not looked at that data. It would be interesting to see if their results are significantly better than others for the extra mass. Designs can be of the same strength and yet weigh differently. Some designs are just heavy because of materials variances, too. The price of the Volvo (they are not alone) is high in my view. Take, for example, the Toyota Mirai. Toyota plans to lower the price by 20% to increase market share as well as implement significant changes to it. So, the price, in part, is set where they think the market will bear and expects it. I just think the value is not there at the current price point.
@@ksorsomeplace the XC90 T8 Incription can be had for around $70K or less. Lexus doesn't really offer a PHEV as other luxury brands have added since 2016 with the XC90 came out. You are partially paying for exclusivity even almost five years later.

Honestly, I'm from Southern California and pass EVERYBODY in my Prius C. In the right lane. With all 99 horsepower. We like to romanticize passing power, assuming people are actually going at speed in a perfect world, but even when there's room to get going people aren't even doing the speed limit. There is no fear of trying to keep up with traffic going 100 mph.
The absence of physical bottoms for the climate controls still is a big headache and a huge standstill considering that all major competitors in even smaller classes are all gone away from them and offer much better solutions.

True, and I really like that vehicle (my dad has one). But it does not have AWD.
@@DrivenCarReviews AWD would be a nice addition to the Pacifica PHEV, but I think it’s still a great alternative to a regular 3 row PHEV SUV. Also, how’s your Dad’s experience with his 2019 Pacifica PHEV going so far?
Ha Ha, I have gotten some great furniture for free or near free just in my subdivision alone. This summer my neighbor got some new furniture and due to what's going on and him wanting to limit his exposure to people due to his job, he put a gorgeous chair and ottoman at the curb, even put matching cushions and a blanket with it, had to easily be a $1,000 for the stuff. A couple years ago too another neighbor was moving and had a gorgeous leather and steel recliner in mint condition for sale for $100 and I grabbed it quickly, looked it up and it was a $1,500 chair. Buying furniture in the store is for suckers.
I have an xc90 B5 diesel here in the uk, I use the car to tow my caravan which weighs 1650kg. That 18 mile electric range just dropped to 10 miles .. pointless. Btw on a 60 mile run I got 50mpg & around the town I get over 30mpg.

Great review! I don’t understand the “double tap” gear shift issue. I presume to move from reverse to drive, one must first pass through neutral. That’s two taps. Without a double tap, how could one ever engage neutral? Also, 2 “taps” has been the way every automatic transmission has worked forever. What am I missing?
Many electric controls allow pulling the lever forward or back once to select. I fully admit it could be an annoyance only to me. But it's my review and I can say what I want. / ; ^ )
Volvos with this engine are complicated both mechanically & from an engineering perspective. I would not want to own it outside of warranty.
This plug in hybrid might make sense if you make mostly shorter commutes and can charge at the destination. It also allows for long trips on petrol.
The complexity of carrying around a turbocharged and supercharged engine bothers me, though.

As always, great review on all levels; commentary, video and valid info.....but man, your constant requests for subscribers based off how good you are is a bit of a turn off. I subscribe as I want to support, but you need to tone that part down and let your work speak for itself.
Sorry but it doesn't work that way Kevin. The work should speak for itself but it doesn't. Subscription rates triple when I promote. 40-50 hours of shooting, research, writing, and editing into a piece is a big investment. I prefer not to toil in vain.
Love the hybrid here, but how long will that 4 cylinder last on this 5000 lbs SUV? A 6 cylinder is needed here.

With the 20 inch (275 mm wide) tires the best looking larger SUV imo. Pity about the very complex technology (quite a lot of problems with many T8s), and the unsafe ergonomics. Deleting so many hard buttons is a big mistake I think. No spare wheel is also a failure.

Plug-in hybrids are better for suburban and rural people, full EV's are better for city (urban) people. EV's also make great secondary/commuter cars, but right now unless you live in a city, its hard to justify an EV as your only vehicle. PHEV's are the best of both worlds

Great review. This is a lovely SUV and the safety features are great. But this year, Volvo made Consumer Reports Top-10 Least Reliable Brands, in part because of the issues with the XC90. Turbo charging, super charging, hybrid batteries, and air suspension are all predictable failure points if you plan to own this thing for 100K miles or more. This is a lease-only vehicle, in my opinion. The interior is fantastic, but I'd much rather see physical dials for the climate controls.

Land Rover don’t do a three row PHEV. The Discovery, RR Sport, Defender ALL lose the third row if a PHEV is specified.
Are we convinced of Volvo’s build quality though? I’ve seen many of these rolling around and the window trim seems never to line up from one door to the next. I’m not in the income bracket where I can legitimately go try one at a dealer though.
I’ve looked at used ones at local Volvo dealers, and have seen the same problems with trim falling off around the windows of vehicle.

Someone please cross shop or test drive this XC90 Recharge against the Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring and give a fair and honest opinion.
35 miles of electric range with a small IC powerplant is the future. Low consumption and minimal expensive batteries. These luxury SUV's shoot themselves in the foot trying to up their HP and weight unnecessarily. 200HP is more than enough and 100hp would be fine for daily driving. Love the Volvo's though.

At that price, your buying this because of the novelty, not for saving on fuel, because if you can afford this, gas prices probably aren’t a concern for that person.

Great, more and more tech to go bad down the road and cost you an arm and a leg to keep the car running. Not for me, I'll stick with simple aspirated engines.

For tons of people (like me) that would cover the daily drive. If I owned one of these and charged it nightly, the gas engine would kick on a handful of times/year. Americans tend to "overbuy," in my experience. We shop as if everyday we're hauling a camper cross country using only dirt roads, then putter back and forth to work.
My Cadillac CT6 plug-in has a range of 40 miles and I can plug-in at work which is only 12 miles away. Plenty of EV range for after work errands and eating out.
