ALICE COLTRANE - JOURNEY IN SATCHIDANANDA / 1971 / GRP / SPIRITUAL JAZZ
CLASSIC/10
Y'all know this is just my opinion, right? - Hudba
I'm hoping this review brings more people aboard the Col-train, this record is a masterpiece.
ive been listening to john coltrane so much i didnt even notice ALICE coltrane existed lol
@@ohfour7710 I actually knew about Alice Coltrane years before I had ever heard of John. Interesting world
omg the col-train...
The Alice trainstop or the John trainstop?
I know I can’t wait to listen to this!
Did not know Flying Lotus was Alice Coltrane’s grand nephew, crazy
Yup. He's talked about growing up under her wing in a very musical family in general. Really cool and makes a lot of sense knowing his work.
That's why he's got a track called Auntie's Harp that samples her
@@LukeRichert That's dope as fuck
Isn't flying lotus himself a jazz artist or funk
Hah, and I'm almost tired of hearing it… I feel like it's mentioned every other time some of them are mentioned 🙃
Flying Lotus has a song "Auntie's Harp" on Cosmogramma, when I realized the connection years ago my mind was blown. Hats off Melon.
I wish he’d do classics week every month. So many great records out there I wish he’d talk about
Think a full week every month whilst still doing all his other content would be a bit much. Maybe one classic a month would be easier
Thembi
On a serious note this is one of the best jazz albums of the 70’s and all time
pharoah saunders is a living legend
Yes it is, indeed
Glad you said one of because the Jazz landscape is vast and incredibly brilliant...
This is probably the best album ever featured on this channel.
How can you say that when he has reviewed The Big Day on this channel?
@@gregh5061 Ok, the second best.
Nav?
@@hamzasaid3368 no I meant The Big Day as in the grammy winning album by Country music artist Eminem
Lmao
So glad you're reviewing this transcendent masterpiece. It's sadly overlooked and I know a lot of people will listen to this thanks to you Fantano.
for real, i just discovered her last week and she has so many great albums, its unreal.
@@nimaxx absolutely!!! She has arguably as great a career as John Coltrane. Glad to hear you're enjoying her work!
@@dylanmcmahon4902 thanx :)
RIP to both of them. their legacy is here and and still shinning.
I agree. So many classic album lists have John Coltrane up there really high, but sadly don't even mention her (or lots of the other spiritual jazz greats like Archie Shepp, etc)
I don't know if I would call it overlooked, but maybe i'm too into in my own listening and a bit unaware of others… overlooked in what sense? This type of jazz could be said to be overlooked in the jazz world, and many jazz albums could be said to be overlooked outside jazz
Alice Coltrane was a deep genius. I wrote an essay about this for the 50th anniversary of its recording (November 2020) for Vinyl Writers. My favorite jazz album. The most mystical, spiritual jazz album.
where can we find the essay?
Another year, another classics week without Disintegration
*sigh*

best album of the 80s
@@chiffre5357Either You're Living All Over Me or Atomizer.
Turiya and Ramakrishna is honestly top 5 of the greatest song ever composed. She was brilliant and talented. Rest in peace Mr and Mrs Coltrane.
This is so underrated. Easily one of the top 10 jazz albums of all time.
Definitely not underrated. It’s a widely acclaimed album.
@@DefenestrateYourselfdepends who you’re talking to. Most people have not heard this album, so underrated fits IMO
for anyone who doesnt know, Alice Coltrane is actually Flying Lotus's Aunt! what a talented family.
fatnato say that in review
I saw flying lotus at a grocery store
@@whyargon i dont watch videos
@@anthonycarlos2095 was he nice 🙂?
I wonder if her family has any other musicians
This album is incredibly soothing, it's been my go-to for the roughest days of the past year
I’m excited for more people to get into Alice Coltrane because of this. She has so many great albums: Lord of Lords, Universal Consciousness, Monastic Trio and Transcendence are personal favs.
Ptah is my favorite from her personally
For those who are interested in diving more into Alice’s discography, listen to “World Galaxy” and “Eternity”. Both great records as well.
Whats a good starting point?
Eternity is my favorite of hers!
@@liquidpebbles7475 the album melon is reviewing is probably the best starting point as it's only 37 minutes and doesn't get too out there. If you like the more free jazz parts of Journey then I'd say go for Ptah the El Daoud or Huntington Ashram Monastery after Journey. A Monastic Trio is a good one if you prefer the more straight ahead elements. If the length isn't an issue then I'd recommend listening to Reflection on Creation and Space, which is a 5 year spanning "best of" that covers the beginning of her career. The early albums on Impulse are her best albums in my opinion and all warrant a listen at least once. Hope that helps!
Not to forget Ptah the El Daoud, released one year earlier
yessss. and she's not the bandleader in this one, but the elements by joe henderson is great as well. wicked record in the spiritual jazz vein
For all those watching this who haven't done so yet: Do yourself a favor and listen to everything by Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders from around that time. It's all absolutely stellar.
Also Sun Ra
@@nicknickson3650 Sun Ra’s a little too out there for me personally. But, I respect his work
@@DefenestrateYourself Lanquidity is a very accessible album of his check it out
@@DefenestrateYourselfwho do you think you are?… Anthony Fantano?
But seriously… this is the most basic response when ppl listen to Sun Ra. I think it says more about the listener than it does about the music. You’re free to your opinion, but why do you crave structure so much? Maybe it’s too “out there” because you’re too “in there.”
“Ma wiiieeefffe.”
- John Coltrane
When did he say this got a link?
Dorothy Ashby deserves a shout out in this conversation too, she deserves recognitions in every conversation about the time imo
Anthony has such an amazing wide range and taste in movies. People always meme his comments but he always recommends the best stuff 🙌🏼
Melon and Jazz? Finally... more bro, please
He did a recommendation for modal jazz
I agree; I hope he does more. This isn't the first time, though. As I wrote under another comment, he have reviewed Roland Kirk, Nina Simone and Bitches Brew as classics earlier years; Shabaka Hutchings projects like Sons of Kemet and The Comet is Coming, as well as Matana Roberts, Kamasi Washington, Yazz Ahmed, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah… as ordinary reviews
MORE JAZZ! MORE JAZZ! MORE JAZZZZZ!!!!
I’ve been waiting for an Alice Coltrane review for the longest. She is truly an amazing musician. I highly recommend Universal Consciousness, World Galaxy and Lord of Lords. 3 masterpieces.
The first track is one of the most transcendent pieces of music I've ever listened to.
I'm loving these classic reviews Anthony! Keep doing your thing!
BEYOND HAPPY HE REVIEWED THIS
really thankful that you reviewed this - I'd never heard it before and I'm checking it out now. I'm definitely going to have to listen to more music like this. I enjoy hearing people talk about music and I'll replay your review a few times to try to understand this mesmerizing record.
Thanks for highlighting this record. Very palatable piece of her discography, such a magnificent musician, all on her own.
I found this album in a youtube recommendation years ago. Glad you reviewed this Anthony. Hope everyone finding this for the first time enjoys the project.
Was NOT expecting to see this one, def one of my favorite jazz albums ever. Glad melon covered it :)
I'm surprised Anthony hasn't lost his shit with countless people begging for the WLR review. Be patient for once in your lives geez.
Or people begging for the mtbmb side b review too haha (I'm waiting for this one)
he listened to it on stream yesterday
Pissing me off though the album has been out for a month and I still don’t know whether I should tell people I like it or hate it
I'm pretty sure he got quite annoyed att people asking for WLR during this new music friday stream, can't fact check though since antnee doesn't have vods on

Do a review of Viper's You'll Cowards Don't Even Smoke Crack
He tries to review classic albums that are more under the radar.
You’ll cowards don’t even smoke crack is far too critically acclaimed and universally beloved there would be no point putting shine on it.
Such a classic
@@prandz420 he's reviewed albums like purple rain, the velvet rope, and the black parade so it's not like mainstream music isnt allowed
Robin Hood neither of those albums are anywhere close to the perfection and pop appeal of Y’CDESC
Is that a Jazz review I see? Hell yes to that
This record is amazing glad your branching into Jazz Anthony! :)
He always has been into it

@@RayasNegroOvejas oh word I'll check out his thoughts, this is the first I've seen on jazz so far
I can't fathom how much I appreciate you giving love to Alice Coltrane, absolutely lover her
An absolute classic and one of my favorites in the spiritual realm. Glad to see you delving into Jazzier orbits and giving this music more exposure. Would love to see you review Ask the Ages by Sonny Sharrock (with Pharoah Sanders and Elvin Jones) . Nobody talks about him and he deserves more recognition. Brown Rice by Don Cherry (with Charlie Haden) would be a great review too.
I am once again asking for a classic review of Liquid Swords.
Yes! I was hoping we'd get a classic Jazz review!
Anthony, I wanted to let you know. I purchased this beauty of an album, not that long ago, and listened to it a couple times now. It's such a great Jazz album. I love Jazz, and Blues, and pretty much everything in-between. Thank you! (Mars Volta rules! ;-) )
I am so happy you are highlighting this album thank u melgond
Really happy he's reviewing such works.
Thanks Anthony! I think I just found a new favorite album!
Thanks for entrusting this record to me, Melon. Listening to it right now. Current music doesn't really turn me on as much anymore and I'm rather into discovering old music I'm not familiar with yet, and I'm still quite a pleb when it comes to jazz.
Anthony Fantano
That's a very clever joke l gotta give you that
AKA THICC DADDY MELON
Whothony who?
Calthony Chuchestano
I thought the album "when the pawn ..." by Fiona Apple was going to come out as a classic
I remember talking to a friend about this LP, he said it just sounded like a John Coltrane album with out Coltrane himself. I stopped talking to him after that.
sounds slightly autistic my good sir
Um. On a positive note, John always had a great band…
Wow. Even with her distinct harp and piano styles? Admittedly the influence is there, how can it not? Especially being on the Impulse! label with those familiar players. But they're missing out if they quickly dismiss her material like that. She has her own unique style and talent which is worth exploring. This album, for example, being so good!
@@sugadelicsavagesoul8623 and the likelihood is that they "influenced" or inspired each other. She had a pretty illustrious musical career before they met.

Been meaning to listen to it for a bit thanks for giving me an excuse to finally go for it
what a twist! Great pick Anthony!
eve though John's music is so dear to me and my introduction-to-jazz years, I feel very happy that we're entering the age of synthesising collectively ad better appreciating Alice's music. Which is truly and 80sly world heritage. UNEsco back off jajaj. afterlaughter comestears

This might be sacrilege but enjoy Alice's music more than John's.

Love both but I'm tempted to agree.
Jazz is generally very boring. I don't enjoy either.
@@ttarkus Then why did you watch a review of an Alice Coltrane album?
@@Spanishdog17 I didn't. Just read the comments like 90% of us.

Yes! So lucky I found this on vinyl
Great pick mellon. nice to see something not from the 90's in this classic week

Well done. Well said. Well researched review. Incredible album.
I am so so so happy you reviewed Alice Coltrane

Alice Coltrane is such a gift.
Great review of an immense album!
Great review, excited for plastic beach redux
Glad the Coltrane family getting some love. If you haven't already, go check John Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme'. Amazing record!
i was hoping anthony would make a video reviewing alice coltrane some day and that day has finally come. i'm fulfilled.
I was just playing that album with Devadip and her yesterday! Did not expect to see this here. I was saving this album but I guess I'll listen to it now
Honestly was surprised by how much I enjoyed this review. Would love to see a 'Thembi' Pharaoh Sanders review.
I got some John Coltrane but didn't know about this. Interesting.
Wow, was not expecting this. Alice is pretty underrated.

It is not🤔 it's rated very well by critics

Beautiful album. Just recently discovered the wonder of Alice.. Can't wait for the review on 'Bobs Son'
Man I been searching for this album for so frickin long
An animation teacher of mine got me into Alice Coltrane not so long ago, I am so grateful he did.

love that he matches the two records in the background
i'm glad this is a positive review. if it was negative I would never watch this channel ever again.....so....that's good.
Great review Antknee, but can we get a Horse Rotorvator review next year?
Personally, I prefer Ptah, the El Doaud, but JiS is just as good. I'm just glad that this video will make people check out Alice's music.
omg I love Alice Coltrane! I actually like her ashram tapes even more than her jazz. There's a really good compilation of them called "World Spirituality Classics 1: The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda" that is mega awesome
Just discovered this today, best thing I ever heard.
One of my personal favorite albums of the 70s and favorite jazz albums of all time
I used to use Galaxy In Turiya by Alice Coltrane as my alarm clock (after hearing it on a FlyLo mix), it was such a beautiful way to wake up ... I've not heard this album though.
Thank you for this review melonman!! Have you considered reviewing Shakti and John McLaughlin?
got this on vinyl for christmas.. GREAT record
Hey Newthony Agethano, loved this review! I wondered if you could tip an anthology on spiritual jazz or general benchmark records for the genre? I really wanna get into it (for the sake of my research paper and wellbeing). Have a good year, man.
I ain't Melon but I'd like to think I can recommend some good spiritual jazz records. Do you have a preference on how "out there" it sounds? And not to be too prying but what's your research paper on?
Next year, you should do
The Replacements - Tim
Fishmans - Long Season
Buju Banton - ‘Til Shiloh
Dolly Parton - Coat of Many Colors
Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
I really enjoy Buju’s music but I feel like Anthony would try to stay away from reviewing it given some of Buju’s controversies like Boom Bye Bye
Please make more retro reviews Anthony
This album feels hypnotic
My favorite jazz album!
Love this album Melon. Great one to finish off classics week.
Please consider these for next years classics week
The Beastie Boys- Paul’s Boutique
The Cure- Disintegration
Charles Mingus- Black Saint and The Sinner Lady
Arcade Fire- Funeral
Squarepusher- Feed Me Weird Things.
Ok I wasn't expecting an Alice Coltrane review
