I have an 04 ram 1500 with the 4.7l. I found out from experience why the head gaskets keep going bad. These engines require a special antifreeze from dodge. It's not the universal antifreeze. Universal will eat the head gaskets because of how the coolant passages are. I've been through 2 before I figured it out through ram forums. Now I have had the correct fluid in a long time and no issues. Yes a bit more expensive, but like you say so often. Buy the right stuff the first time. It's the same with the power steering on these. Normal power steering fluid eats out the rack and pinion seals. Dodge actually recommends ATF+4 in the service manual that nobody wants to read. So I killed a power steering rack because of my lazy mistake. It's good to read the owners manuals on every vehicle you own before replacing or topping of fluids. Especially with dodge. I love my dodge and if I didn't fix it myself every time, you are right. They would not be worth it financially. So read the owners manuals and owner's would have less issues and reliable vehicles no matter the make or model I'm sure.

My current well used 2004 4x4 has over 200k miles and runs like butter. His constant nut slurping of Toyota is annoying as well. I just got rid of my 11 Camry that was a basket case. Sucker was totaled just because of suspension damage. Also found out there were 12 recalls on it Toyota never informed me of, one of which is a problem known to cause exactly what caused the accident. I also didn’t car for the inside A pillars, that covered airbags, coming off every time it got warm and they covered freaking airbags. @@andrewtorrisi345 I feel that. I have a 2011 RAM 1500 with the 4.7 that suffered a cam failure last weekend. Same cam and lifter issues as the 5.7. The main issue is that the lifters are splash oiled from underneath, and that the oil ports are too small. Not getting enough oil (or the right oil - MOPAR say my engine should run on 0w20, but every mechanic I know that fixes hemis says 5w40 is the way to go) causes the roller on the lifter to seize and then it eats the cam lobe clean off.
For reference, my truck has just over 100k miles, was only ever dealer serviced and maintained all service schedules and updates, was never abused, has approx 70% unloaded highway miles, and only towed occasionally (and nothing over 2000lbs). My local and trusted speed shop wasn't even willing to open the engine - the owner just said "Hand me $5000+ taxes for a reman motor, and it's gonna take us 2 full days of shop time @ $120/hr to do the swap right".

Then fuel injection was more complicated than the carbs, and before that you had electronic feedback carbs that were a nightmare. The early OBD1/EEC-IV stuff From Ford and others are harder to diagnose than a modern vehicle or something after 96.

I had a 1999 Chevy Z71 4x4 w/short bed and regular cab, it had the 4.8 liter engine. It was nothing but trouble (transmission failure, several fuel pumps, cab leak due to a faulty gasket on the cab pressure relief vents located behind the seat and finally a shock absorber mount failure in the rear). I now have a 2013 Chevy 4x4 with the 5.3L engine since 2013 that has been excellent. I swear the 1999 was cursed, it was on a roll back more than it was on the road. (I take good care of my vehicles)

Mrs Wizard must be a good cook. I've worked on cars and bikes for 50 years and as the years added up so did the inches on my waistline. finally I decide to build a platform out of plywood and 2x4s that fits in between the fenders where the hood rests when closed. This makes working on the back of an engine a breeze.

Very glad to hear your comments on the Dodge trucks! I'm a Toyota guy, but my son sold me his fairly clean '01 extended cab RAM with the 5.9 liter a few years back really cheap. Bought it just because every guy needs a good old truck and figured I'd sell it after a couple of years or so, but it drives, looks, and runs so good I just cant let it go! Drove a later model used Tundra the other day and it was undoubtedly really nice, but not so much nicer than my old Dodge that it was worth spending all that extra money on! Its a really easy fix the part is only $12 but I don't think most people know its that little black ball on your dashboard that's making these DRLs not work and most people don't want to take their radio out or take apart the entire dash. As someone who has faced the lifter tick on the Hemi engine twice, I can say that the issue is perfectly solvable if you just the lifters and use a good engine oil. The recommended oil on the forums is Redline 5W30. I have it running on my engine right now and it sounds so smooth.
I honestly think that even GM truck owners could try Redline on their engines and see if it solves their lifter issues.
For me the biggest reason for the lifter issues is using lighter oils especially in hot climates. This is what happened to me.
The dealer uses 5W30 when the car goes to them, but because my manual specifies 5W20, they will sell me 5w20 Mopar oil, knowing full well that it will slowly kill my lifters over time.
It is possible to use 5W20 oil and not face the issue, as long as you keep the change intervals more frequent like 4k - 5k miles; instead of the 10k. I would still buy a 2014 - 2017 Ram 1500. It is a good truck. You just need to know how to take care of it. Knowing what I know now, I can keep my Ram going for 500,000 miles, easy.

For anyone looking at a first generation 2000-2006 Tundra, make sure you inspect the frame THOROUGHLY for severe frame rust & rot. Toyota had a recall on them and many were given sub-par coatings vs frame replacement. There are many owners who have had to scrap really nice and well-maintained trucks because the frames broke and failed inspections. There are still lots of great trucks left though, just check the cross members, and if it’s regular surface rust you can treat it with Fluid Film or a similar product and be happy for years to come.

My dad bought a 99 lightly used in...2001. Not in the US so still specced with a 4 speed manual (yes, four) and a variation of the 5.7l v8. It's the beater beast of burden and it's a bit beat up but it still starts every time and it can still do it's job as a work truck. Everything on it is original.
4 wheel discs without ABS and a mushy pedal makes for some fun if you're not smooth on the brakes and/or the truck bed is unloaded.

Also alot of owners wanted the noise fix but even tho the truck was still drivable. The problem with the cam phasers and timing chain was when the phasers would ware out and cause timing to go crazy and not run right. Also people didn't like the sparks breaking out in the head which to me isn't a big deal Also long as you get the tool. You can also replace the phasers and get a cam phaser limiter or lockout which usually fix that from.

Couldn't agree more with your To Buy Chevy/GMC pick. I have a 2000 Silverado X cab 2WDç I bought new that year with a 5.3/4L60e. Oil changes, brake pads, tires, spark plugs and the few other regular maintenance items were the extent of the work I had to do on it. I drove that truck all over the southeast pulling a trailer with at least one residential gun safe on-board. The odometer read 333,085 miles when 1st gear stopped working, pretty important gear when towing.
Dspite the fact that the enine never failed to start immediately with every turn of the key I decided I might as well replace the engine along with the tranny. So out came the 5.3/4L60e and in TCwent a beefed 4L80e behind a 6 0 Liter LY6. Changes made were, DOD delete, replaced OEM cam with a factory Trailblazer SS cam, LM7 roller lifters, larger throttle body, heads shaved .040", electric water pump, electric fans, larger 3 row radiator that's strictly for engine cooling, separate coolers and thermostats for engine oil and trans fluid plus full length ceramic coated headers into 3" stainless exhaust. Nearly everything on/in the truck was upgraded or replaced with new. Replaced the steering rack, all calipers, all rotors, interior carpet after completely going nuts with sound deadener. While sitting my old faithful Alpine quit, no more. Instead I installed a Windows 10 Pro mini-ITX computer using SSDs. My entire music collection at my fingertips and skip free. I love my truck! More today than the day I bought it.
My dad passed in 2012, thankfully mom held onto his 2003 GMC Yukon XL which I drove while the Silverado was down. When the a Silverado was finished I inherited the Yukon. So far, with a little over 100k miles on it, I expect the Yukon will go just as far, or further, that the Silverado.
