Genuinely surprised to see no mention of any 300ci / 4.9L i6 powered Ford Trucks so far. Those were known to run forever with little maintenance. There are many stories of how they just wouldn't die when they put in the engine killer solution back during Cash For Clunkers. Every other vehicle would die after a couple minutes of idle, and be towed out the the salvage lot, but all the 300 i6's would go back there under their own power.

We are currently on our 4th Ranger. They’ve proven to be durable pickups with the exception of the 3.0 V6.
Our current Ranger is a 11 XLT super cab 4X4 with the 4.0L V6.
Before adding the K&N intake and the FlowMaster exhaust as well as a free flow exhaust manifold, I was getting 19 mpg on the freeway with the cruise set on 75mph. Now with the mods I’m consistently getting 23mpg.
We get 5-6 feet of snow every winter and our Ranger has never gotten stuck.
It’s now 12 years old but has only 35K miles on it.
I change the oil every 4K miles with Kirkland full synthetic motor oil and I change the front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluids every 30K miles.
I guess this is why we get 250+K miles from all of our vehicles.
If I didn’t need the hp and torque then I would have opted for the 2.3L 4cyl naturally aspirated engine. Those 2.3L can get 500K miles easily.
Not only does our Ranger haul a yard of gravel, dirt and fire wood, but after the intake and exhaust mod’s, it now hauls ass too. 😁

The first one we put over 500K miles on it and the second one we put almost 700K miles on it. Back then we changed the oil every 3K miles with conventional Valvoline motor oil.
We now change our oil every 6 months (which is only about 1,500 miles) with Valvoline full synthetic (high mileage) oil, even though our Ranger has only 36K original miles.
We change the oil on our Subaru’s every 5K miles with Valvoline full synthetic (high mileage) oil.

The toughest most reliable workhorse truck I ever owned was a 60's 1 ton Dodge power wagon with the 383 hemi and 4 speed transmission. The one that was equal to it was an old 1 ton international with a 401 v8. I have never had anything more tough or that could take as much abuse as those trucks. We used our Internationals like tractors. In fact when we got a tractor stuck , many times we used the international to pull them out. I hopped in it for the 1st time, started it up and pressed down on the gas and spun the rear tires. Like a kid who'd just found $5 in the house, I was like "ooohhhh shiiiiiet!!!' It was powerful and fast for its time, but it was heavy as a tank and when it hit bumps, you felt all of it. After driving it a few times, I felt it was best suited just to tow loads because that pickup had almost toooo much power in it when it wasnt towing extra weight. Could not agree with you more - Ive got a dakota with the 4.7 in it and even after moving up several tire sizes it lost NONE of its power or throttle response. Crank shaft and cam shaft sensors were replaced and the truck is insanely reliable. Its 4x4 prowess is insane - I know I can depend on it at ANY given time. I have jumped hills and it lands like it was built for it - 75mph on Klevar 265s 75 15s on dirt roads no issue - 35 mph offroad easy - will not get you stuck in mud or sand unless its you who did it.
I loved that truck so much I bought a dodge durango - same generation with the 4.7 except this ones AWD and this impresses the heck out of me. Gave it a 2 inch life, 275 75 18s, 2 chamber muffler exhaust - also insane prowess in mud and rough terrain. Tons of room in it for taking the family literally anywhere at any given time. This also starts up every time, I should upgrade sensors while Im thinking about it - only weak spot is ball joints but I have spares.
At no point do I ever feel worried Im going to be stranded, or cant go somewhere because of weather. The transfer case output shafts must be made of tungsten or something - because you literally cant put enough force on the system to break it. Rock freaking solid. Ive owned rams, fords and chevies - I wont buy chevys anymore because of the transmissions but my trucks both have 200k on them and transmissions are shifting like they should even after everything I put them through.

S-10 4.3 engines were MUCH better than the head-cracking Ranger sixes, but the Ranger fours were great German designs.I had two Dodge D-50s which while slow were excellent machines. 2001 Toyota Tundra former owner here. Fabulous truck, and a transmission and engine that just wouldn't quit. Why'd I sell it? The Toyota dealer who sold it to me hoodwinked me and didn't tell me about the recall on the improperly rust-proofed sub-frame components. Since this was Illinois and they use a lot of salt on the roads, eventually the frame looked like Swiss cheese. What really frosts me is that the dealer would have paid zero out of pocket, and Toyota would have fixed the problem under a nation-wide recall. Still, though, got her up to 268,000 miles before someone made me an offer on it. Yeah, I showed them the rust, but they wanted it anyway....
That said, if I run across an older Tundra for sale, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it ~ provided of course, that the body and frame are clean.

I picked up an 07 F150 with the 3 valve 5.4 Triton for $3500 because of the cam phaser issue and that truck hasn’t given me any problems. I drive it daily for work and take long highway trips regularly and it’s got 210,000 miles on it. Haven’t fixed the cam phasers, nor do I plan to. For all of the problems I’ve read about that truck has surprised me.

The Hilux is challenged by the Mitsubishi L200 also known as the Strada or Triton depending in region. This one is proving itself to be one hell of an off roader. There's also the Isuzu D-Max and the international Ford Ranger, a version of which is sold in the US with a gas engine. But international Ford Ranger has turbo diesels. There's also the Nissan Navarre. Along with the VW Amarok, you have a very successful genre of small pickups that are powered by turbodiesels but one that's absent in the US market. Toyota's line up of pickups doesn't end there with the Hilux. In Asia and Japan, you have the HiAce and Lite Ace cab over pickups. In some regions you have the 79 series Land Cruiser, kind of like the Land Cruiser idea of the Jeep Gladiator.
