  • Honda is harnessing the power of the universe RIGHT NOW!
They're taking the EV company model and telling Elon to SHOVE IT!
Because they are using the MOST abundant element on planet Earth to power their latest car- HYDROGEN!
While, Hydrogen cars ARE NOT a new thing (companies like Toyota and BMW for instance have been building them for decades) Honda's new Fuell Cell is a bit of a gamechanger.
And the craziest part? They partnered with GM to make it happen! Today, we take a look at what Honda and GM are up to, and show how the work being done in the hydrogen space might just be a way forward to keep our beloved combustion engines pumping for the forseeable future. Let's go!

I totally agree Hydrogen Fuel Cells (HFCs) are good.
As for the video title, I really can't see how HFC are going to save the internal combustion engine. Well not for the mass market.
HFCs generate electricity, that would power an electric motor.
I guess you could argue that once the hydrogen refilling infrastructure is in place , the hydrogen could be burnt in an internal combustion engine, but this is a real lot less efficient than using the hydrogen in a fuel cell and generating electricity. I think a car will go something like 2 to 3 times the distance using the same amount of hydrogen in a fuel cell as compared to burning it in an internal combustion engine. Internal combustion engines waste a real lot of energy as just heat. (I'd need to check the numbers, however HFCs are a lot more efficient)
So I guess the really rich people that want an internal combustion engine running on hydrogen could have it. The hydrogen refilling infrastructure would be there for them as well.
Hence the internal combustion engine would be saved for the very rich, who still want their 5 litre V8.
The mass market cars using hydrogen, would be HFCs driving an electric motor, and not burning it in an internal combustion engine.

Not exactly true, hydrogen pricing is about the same as 91/93 octane $5 a gallon. There's plenty of hydrogen stations now and you can make your own version of hydrogen power and water is cheap from your water faucet. And if it sits, it just drips out the tail pipe.

I have wondered about home generation of hydrogen using electrolysis .
It is just a source of water (might have to be filtered) and electricity, and an electrolyser and then compressor.
In the UK (where I am) this would probably only be economic on overnight off peak electricity rates that can be £0.07 / kwh.
On days rates that are currently more like £0.34 / kwh, it'd be very expensive hydrogen !
I wonder if someone is selling a home electrolyser compression ? Guess I'd need to google for that ....

It is still also really inefficient and really energy expensive to extract hydrogen.
The main reasons why this didn't take off didn't change, sadly. It would be super cool, omg, to keep our awesome engines and not pollute at the same time.
EE shows a hydrogen engine will also make way less power for the same size..

OPEC countries want to make us believe hydrogene would be the solution but it's not. Most efficient are batteries we only need better ones using less harmful components! The problem with hydrogene cars is, when its battery is empty you only have a 25-50kw fuel cell and your car only gets what? Only 25-50kw depending on the fuel cell! So most important in an hydrogene car is to always have a fully charged battery. Isn't it strange somwhow?
