I feel I am learning a lot from your videos, and I appreciate the time and knowledge you share with us. I took a long time to really get interested in houseplants....I will be 68 this year....but I am really loving this spring....and my husband seems to be enjoying them too. Now....as I am old enough to be your grandmother....SMILE!!!! You are the cutest thing when you smile! I liked the thought of plants but they would die. I began watching Nick's plants videos and was so encouraged to try growing several he suggested. Now I have about 20. They are all doing great.

Bird of Paradise is my favorite floor plant. I have mine in a beautiful Cerulean Blue clay pot. The blue really accentuates the orange flowers. It's very stunning.
While a ZZ plant is too easy, I highly recommend the Raven ZZ plant. Unlike other ZZ's, the lime green new growth is very visible against the black leaves. It's also a very eye catching plant and conversation starter. Love mine to death! I think it's a rewarding plant for both novice and expert.
This video is so timely. Just this morning I was looking at a corner in my living room that **gasp gasp** does not have a plant. Now that you have given me some ideas, I will go shopping tomorrow. BTW, tripod looks like a panther. Just noticed this today 🙂
I've found a 10in monstera, schefflera, draceana and lady palm for 15 bucks at a kroger grocery store. I hope this helps someone somewhere in your plant journey. I love Aglaonema, I have 8 and I want 8 more but my goodness they are pricey even the small ones.

So glad you mentioned Aglaonmas! I have one I picked up randomly in Ikea a couple of months back because I loved the leaves on it and she is a beauty! Is so happy in a lower light corner of my living room and is putting out not one but two new leaves right now! More people should be talking about these stunning plants!
Omg now I'm way more excited about only paying $30 for my big dracaena than I already was. This thing is big and pretty so I was excited to begin with, but now I know I got it for an actual steal 😍
I got a Phil Burle Marx cutting (reverted variegated) for $3 last August.
It’s now a 3.5 foot tall “tree” lol (on a bamboo stick) and I love him so hard, so yes they absolutely can become or be considered floor plants too

I bought five foot floor plants at Costco for 22.99 and they are very healthy. They have a lot of selections to choose from
I got a $15 rescue ficus lyrata bambino from Walmart last year (it was literally bent over from being stored in a container that was way too short for it). I pretty much immediately repotted it (ik you're not supposed to do this haha), staked it up to help it grow upright again, and since then it's been one of my fastest growing plants. It hasn't dropped a single leaf since I got it and now it's this beautiful tree that's grown at least a foot taller.
I don't know if I got lucky, if my house is just particularly good for ficus, or if my plant was just put through so much at Walmart that she's super resilient now 😅 but I feel so good about myself when people talk about how difficult fiddle leaf figs are and I get to look over at my happy little tree.
Same thing for me. I have 4 different species of Ficus and they all seem to do well. I will admit I had issues for a time with the Triangularius dropping leaves but once I moved it to a new spot it seems happy. Maybe there is some strange Ficus luck going on! LOL
why are we not supposed to repot right away?😅 i bought a bambino a few days ago from home depot because I hate the soil its in and found it was still in the little plug!! shes doing great so far!
@@AerialistAlexis haha it can cause the plant shock, especially if it's already experiencing stress from being transported to a different environment.
However, there are definitely things that can influence this. Going from a greenhouse (like in a garden center) to your home will likely be a bigger shock than going from Home Depot to your home. How sensitive the plant is/how sensitive its root system is will also make a big difference - a pothos or a philodendron will probably be fine, but a prayer plant should be given much more time to acclimate to your home before being repotted (and their roots should be treated much more delicately during repotting). Plants also tend to experience shock much more easily when the weather is cold, so spring/summer is a safer time to repot early.
People say that fiddle leaf figs should be given 1-2 weeks to acclimate, but personally, I've been fine with repotting early as long as I was extra careful not to over-water in the weeks following (I bought both of mine in spring/summer though, so I would be more careful in the winter).
Generally, I only strictly follow the "no repotting early" rule with prayer plants and more expensive/rare plants that I'm worried about being delicate with. And if the plant is sitting in soaked peat moss, especially if it's a plant that's more likely to rot like a succulent (I got a Hoya the other day like this), I'm actually much more likely to immediately repot it with better, dry soil.

I got back into house plants recently and of course was an immediate simp for the Ficus Lyrata. I got one in a 4 inch pot and you're definitely right about that being the safest way to go, because it's doing great, even in my north facing window.

ZZ plants are indeed too easy. Glad it wasn't my first plant, would've set a bad expectation, lol. I actually got quite a bit of growth out of mine. Was very surprised. It did in the winter too and I've only had it since early autumn. But this has definitely set me on getting aglaonemas, thank you!
I've found ficus Alii to be the most beautiful and unproblematic of all ficus. Mine spent many years being a cat tree but never , or rarely lost leaves.
Thaumatophyllum bipinnatum is a fantastic easy , but massive floor plant. I have a huge 18 year old seed grown one. I am so proud of it.

Yes! My peace lily is my favourite floor plant and my “money tree” Pachira aquatica is a close second. 😊
My Domino Peace Lily is five years old and is huge. On a plant stand I would definitely consider it a floor plant.
I am so envious! I wish my black cat Gypsy would leave my house plants alone like beautiful Muffin does yours. My favorite floor plant possibly even favorite plant (I just have a baby one) is my Thai Constellation Monstera. Another of my personal favorite floor plants is my Norfolk Pine. It has such unique folage. I love the ZZ Raven, but I am leary of having one in my home, because they are so toxic to cats. But if I were to have a work office, I would definitely own one. I totally agree with you, I want a varigated Cast Iron plant and even a small specimen is quite pricey.
Cast iron plant can grow quite fast. My 7 leaf plant is growing 12 new leaves this spring. I just put it near southern window and gave it good amount of fertilizer and more water than in winter.
The same with ZZ plant. It can grow fast in high light situation.

I bought a little fig plant in a 4” pot at the botanical gardens in the Bronx about 6, 7 years ago. Put it in an atrium under skylights, water it when the soil gets dry, but mostly ignore it. It is over 6’ now. Its lost a few leaves, but still has leaves from bottom to top.

Kentia palms are great easy going palms too! I snagged a 120cm one at B&Q for £50 and it's doing well in a spot that gets indirect afternoon light and I water it when first 2 inches of soil are dry. I wanted a really big one but couldn't justify spending over £100.
Many years ago I had a 5 foot tall Tineke I started from a much smaller cutting. It was glorious but stolen from off my front porch. I've never been willing to get a new Tineke since, and it causes me a little heartache when I see one. I do have an elastica black that I also started from a cutting, now almost as tall as me. Ficus Elastica really is a solid, near indestructible plant.

I had a lovely Swedish Ivy that I cherished and someone also stole mine from my front porch,I have never had another since😢
I grow almost everything in full sun. Schefflera does very well in full sun. Every tree is pretty much full sun plant. Many plants are just not acclimated to full sun but after they get the old leaves burnt the new leaves are just fine. My Schefflera didn't even burn when I took it out in the spring.

I love my syngonium chiapense! i purchased it as a 2 leaf top cut from a nursery and it has grown soooo much in the past few months. The leaves are so beautiful!

Hi Nick! Loved this video, as I do ALL of your videos! ;-) It was nice that you showed the three different types of floor plants. I have 3 Schefflera. One is about 2 ft. tall that is variegated, one small green and one small variegated. The tall one has just one stem and has lost enough leaves at the bottom to give it the appearance of a "tree", even though the stem isn't very thick. The two smaller ones are pretty new. I have quite a few Dracaena. The majority are types of Marginatas, and only my oldest one is pretty big. I do have a small Janet Craig, and two other wider leaf Dracaena. I have six ZZ plants, four green and two Raven. I have quite a few Snake plants, too. These four "varieties" are my favorite, not counting my vining plants. I've tried a few Aglaonema, but haven't had good luck with them. I guess I just don't either have their care down, or they just don't like my house. I will try them again because I think they are so pretty. As always, it's always fun seeing Muffin! Thank you so much for sharing!

I got my cast iron Milky Way as an outdoor plant in Louisiana for 15 bucks last year. I was so excited!
I've lived in the Deep South all my life and cast irons are very popular landscape plants. They multiply like crazy, so you just dig them up and divide the root ball with a shovel. Never heard of using them as indoor floor plants until just recently, but I can definitely see how that would work because I've used them in large pots outdoors. They're practically impossible to kill, hence the name. Now where's my shovel...

Aspidistra. Mine is over 40 years old. Enormous. Very moth-eaten… lives outside all year round in South Wales uk. Gets all the cold wet weather and snails! Very hardy.

Today whole day I was trying to think of super low light floor plant for a northern slightly tinted window. I guess I will just buy two low light plants and rotate them every couple of months.

I bought my monstera deliciosa in a 6 inch pot it wanted out of for $25 I'm absolutely loving watching it get bigger. It was 16 to 18 inches tall last year when I brought it home, it's surpassing 3 feet right now lol it's on my kitchen table, a hell of a centerpiece 🤣 gonna need a new spot by the end of summer. It's getting a nice glazed 12 inch pot soon
another great contendor for an amazing floor plant is the philodendron goeldii/thaumatophylum spruceanum. it doesn't need a moss pole and has succulent-ish leaves so it can handle a bit of underwatering. it matures relatively quickly (i had a 1 leaf cutting with 3 lobes turn into a 5 leaf monster. the most recent leaf has 9 long stunning lobes). it also doesn't take much space horizontally as it grows up, so it's not like a mamei or gloriosum that crawls on the ground.
I have two separate small rubber trees. One is a free green cutting and the other is a bush like burgundy I am waiting to grow. My Monstera Deliciosa became a floor plant in 1 year and it is not even fully mature yet! It still looks great! I have a small cast iron plant I am patiently waiting for it to become a substantial floor plant. I did find giving it a bit more light has it producing many new leaves.

I find it difficult to Care for draceana bc the branch/stem tends to shrink and rinkle. I haven’t found out if it’s bc of over- or underwatering… maybe you can tell me😳
I live in zone 10-11 and Schefellera are free. They just grow everywhere… and are weeds
Clusia Rosea has been a great floor plant for me, maybe requires too much light for some floor plant settings but it looks like a miniature tree so what's not to love

I'm surprised you didn't say Netal Mahogany! I got one just cause you advised it a long time ago, and I absolutely LOVE mine. I got the cast iron at the same time, at your advice. It's grown soooooo slow in the past couple years and it's a long way from being floor worthy. but the mahogany has flourished. It takes tone of water though.

My zz plant is my fastest grower. 🤷♀️. It’s doubled in size in 4 months.

I like palms and got around 50 varieties but they are hard to grow. They need rly high temperatures to grow effectively. But if someone wanna easy palm to grow I think Musa aka. banana palm is a great choise. Very green,interesting patterns on leafs, fast grow, no need for high temperatures. You need only to remember that's it's need a lot of water to look good. And I don't joke, a lot of water.
Nick, I noticed that your syngonium is in leca. Is it hard to transition a plant from soil to leca? You do not have a lot of your plants in leca (seems like cleaner option to soil to me). What are your thoughts on leca vs soil?
Other non toxic floor plants would be pachira aquatica, ponytail palm, tree ferns, false aralia, and I grow southern magnolia in a similar way to rubber tree. Norfolk island pine is possibly non toxic, and I'm not sure if you mentioned true palms as being non toxic. With more light and time to grow, some cacti, and portulacaria would work.

With palm trees, paying more money absolutely becomes worth it. The more expensive palms are easier to grow indoors.
My Fiddle Leaf has grown almost to top of window frame...from 5 inches to 5 ft in 2 years.. Got cocky..so got a Bambino version & the bitch started dropping leaves like a stripper 😂
