    For the pepperomia with the wonky arm, I would tie it very loosely to a straight stake and then just slowly tighten the ties. It can take months or more, but you will eventually train it to grow where you want. I've got a monstera vine that I am doing this with, and I tighten the ties every week or two. I gently life the vine until it starts to give some resistance, and then tie it there and wait until it becomes the norm. It's a great tip because if you do it right, it doesn't take much fussing. :)

    It’s interesting what you say about watering plants in winter. I commented on this on a discord channel but no one took me up on it. I’m finding that with central heating on during the day many of my plants are drying out quicker than they were in summer. So, should I let them go bone dry (some I do this with anyway) or is the old advice of watering less in dormant months just wrong and I should be watering some more (or at least as much)? Is the prevailing advice on watering plants less in winter misleading?

    My Hoya australis ssp Tenuipes finally bloomed this year and it won’t disappoint! Some Hoya have rather interesting smells to their flowers, but the Tenuipes is actually wonderful. Reminiscent of Lily of the Valley mixed with Lilac and the ants were all over it. Mine grows outside all year (Southern Louisiana) and it has wrapped itself into my passion fruit vine and was happy as can be. She also sun stresses beautifully as well…..the H. australis are so underrated

    so in case of a fire which houseplants do you save? Muffin first of course, but after...? hmmm maybe a less pressing emergency cuz a fire you really need to go. ok then. in case of a mandatory evacuation (like a hurricane one the way or something) what top plant would you save? top 5? top 10?
    also the above question led to another question. are your very expensive house plants insured (like as part of your renters insurance)? i don't even know if insurances would even do that and with the volatile pricing of plants, the insured price would be constantly shifting.

  • @aleksandrasaneva4661
    @aleksandrasaneva4661 Před 2 lety

    Hi Nick! Regarding the Dischidia, you are totally right that it's difficult! I got a big one the summer of 2020, and during the winter it was reduced to only a few stems, it really really declined, rotting all the time. I got the same impression, that they really don't like soil. I managed to save a few stems by putting them in some sphagnum in my prop box, always being careful not to keep the sphagnum too wet, and they eventually perked up. Now I have three tiny pots with some very long strands that I managed to grow during 2021, they are still in their sphagnum and I water them very sparingly, I think they like some humidity because they are doing pretty well in my bathroom on the vertical garden above my sink, and they even have aerial roots at every newly grown node. I should probably repot them in some chunky substrate but I haven't had the courage to do it so far in fear they will decline again. Maybe in the spring! Btw I think I had even sent you a private message on Instagram about a year ago from my Mini Home Jungle account, I was asking for your advice with the nummularia because you had many mounted Dischidias and I thought you could have something wise to say haha but you never answered! :D

      The one that I use is Bonide Insect Control Systemic Granules. The active ingredient is Imidacloprid Insecticide. The granules are sprinkled on the soil and lightly scratched in. When watered, the insecticide is released and taken in by the plant. Of course, only use it on ornamental plants not on anything you or your pets would eat. I ordered my Bonide through Amazon but it can be found elsewhere. I don’t use it on all of my houseplants, just on the ones that seem to always be under repeated attack from certain pests (such as my succulents always attracting mealybugs).
