Common Houseplants Everyone Should Be Growing !!

  • Everyone should be growing these plants!! I’ll admit that I skipped over a couple of these at the beginning of my houseplant journey as I deemed them as “too common”, but that’s is one of my biggest regrets as a plant parent. Thanks for watching!

Summer Rayne completely flipped my view of common houseplants with a thought she shared during an interview. She said to view your plants as "heirloom pieces" that you will keep for life and pass down. Sure, a common plant fresh from the Home Depot might not be interesting, but it will be very interesting (and very large) when it's had decades of growth. Looking at my own houseplant collection as "things I will have the rest of my life" really helps me appreciate the common ones more.

I've found with the Chinese evergreens, they do poorly in medium to high light. Mine kept popping new leafs, but wouldn't open. They'd eventually rot off. When I put them in a low light corner though, suddenly the new emergent leafs started opening. So it cannot be understated how much these plants perform in low light. It's somewhat essential, in my experience.

Nailed it, Nick! I'm tired of indoor plants that crap out on me just because I breathed on them! I have a staghorn fern that I planted about 14 years ago in a wire basket lined with coco fiber. It did fabulous outdoors in the Texas summer heat. It wintered in my greenhouse. It has grown so huge that it long ago completely engulfed the basket. It broke the tree limb that I used to hang it on outdoors. Now, rather than trying to move it in and out of the greenhouse, we put 3 screws in a greenhouse rafter and it lives in there year 'round. When we had snowmaggedon in Feb 2021, the temps were single digits for 3 days. We lost power, too. Many of the greenhouse plants died - not that staghorn fern! It's alive and well and probably 6 feet across. Oof. 😂

Yes to scindapsus pictus! I have three varieties but the more "common" Argyreaus is the one I lose track of time just looking at it. The silver splashes really do look amazing against the dark green 😊 Also in love with all my aglonima because I've been able to get huge ones end of season for under $10. I'm all about big plants and common ones really feed the addiction.

These are great, easy care plants everyone should have and start with! And thank you, Nick, for your "taco leaf" advice. That alone has turned me into a successful hoya grower! Other plants, too. Although it doesn't come up in this video, it's the best advice I've gotten and shared on my road to becoming a reformed overwaterer.

Funny thing is I disliked the ZZ plant until I purchased and watched it grow... I'm totally converted, but still astonished over the prices that some people charge for itty bitty plants (mine was in a 6 inch pot for 13 bucks, that's my speed when it comes to spending on plants lol)
So happy that someone out there cares for the more common houseplants...I love to see the unique ones but the wallet isn't big enough to purchase them.

I bought Peperomia Clusiifolia Red Margin on sale in a "Save a Plant" section. It hadn't been watered for at least a month, it was just hanging from the pot, looking so so sad. I watered it and after 2 days it turned into one of the most awesome and gorgeous plants I have. It's happy no matter what amout of light it gets, it grows like crazy, and I just love it

The golden pothos that are trailing around my house and on the wall (there's a lot of them!) become so big! I found one leaf that was a big as half of my torso (I'm 151cm girl btw). Now even those photos leaves on the wall are bigger than my head! I disliked photos long ago too because it was everywhere around my house but fall in love early this year with it because I propagated them to put on my room's window and terrarium. I planted My mom got Manjula photos cutting around 2 months ago and it growing well.
Mom has hoya since at least 12 years ago and they're still thriving to this day. Her hoya always flowering too!

Perfect video Nick! I have a pictus scindapsus Queen Anne. I love this plant more than anything. I had some problems when I potted her up in a wall pot. I think my planting medium was bad. I lost two calathea in other pots in the process but the Queen Anne survived. I repotted her and within days she was putting out new leaves. I want all the other scindapsus pictus. The leaf patterns in silver are really captivating. Love, love, love these easy, beautiful plants. Ferns -if you don’t have an Alligator (Crocodile?) fern you should try it. This plant is gorgeous and easy to care for. Highly recommend. And, for me all of the pathos, philodendrons that I saw growing up and dismissed now have a big role in my plant kingdom. Love them. They require so little and give so much❤️

The golden pothos is one of my favorites because of how quickly it grows. It’s so satisfying. My sad fiddle leaf fig put out it’s first new leaf in 2 months and I was ecstatic. Then I looked at the golden pothos I got a month ago and realized it had pretty much doubled in size 😂. The satisfaction of the what seems to be daily new growth is amazing

Hi Nick! I love your picks. I have all of them, or a variety of them, except the peperomia. For some reason I can't keep peperomias alive, and I've tried a lot of them. I love all of the ones I have. I'm not into the rare plants and don't tend to watch any videos about them. So many times the ones they show just are pretty to me. You seem so happy and more animated in this video and I love it! It's like the last few videos you're more at ease. May have to do with not working at the plant shop, so less stress????? Whatever it is, I'm glad to see you this way. Thank you so much for sharing these beautiful picks with us!
