The main areas of my home I spend time in, my living room and bedroom, both have north facing, small windows, so are always dark other than first thing in the morning. The plants in these rooms are apologised to every day 😂.

My den and living room have north facing windows as well. They are tall windows, but our oak trees block a lot of sunlight. My zz and pothos are sitting on plant stands and are holding their own. They grow super slow, but they’re still alive. lol

    • @SohiHien
      @SohiHien Před 2 lety +3

I have north windows and grow all sorts of things. I just am lucky enough to have wider window sills so all plants are grown right against the windows and they thrive! I can even grow some succulents without them stretching out! Now if I tried to place anything not in the window sills they die a slow death but my window sills look like a jungle with a wide variety of plants in them.

I disagree with the zplant because they grow in bright indirect light in african countries. The lack of light is probably why yours grow so slow. They also like moist (not wet or dry) well draining soil (cactus and succulent mix is best.)

@@couch_philosoph3325 I agree.A friend who has been living in her private indoor and outdoor jungle for over 40 years and who manages a garden centre gave me the tip to get one of these multiple coloured plant lights. And it works well.No legged plants for over a year now :).I even tried it on my oldest two plants who are 40 years and these plant lights worked well with them.

Is this just people riding whatever trend/hype train for views/subs? Or, do grower/sellers reach out to creators to push certain plants/products? About a zz plant. Mine stood collecting dust in my dark apartment for a year. It didn't die or look worse, but it also didn't grow. I had to leave for two months and brought all my plants to my mother. My zz was put in a corners of a room with two huge windows ( one east facing, one southern). It started growing 5 new leafs like in two weeks. And they grew super fast and super big.
So it might be a good idea to put your zz plant in a bright indirect light location for couple of months a year.

Fertilizer in spring/summer so May-Sept. always use half the recommended amount when using liquid fertilizer. I cut the recommended dose in half and mix with water.
About repotting, wait until the plant is really root bound. If it’s a new plant and you want to put it in a cute new pot. Put the plant where you want in your home, wait a week or two so not can adjust and then report. However, I have repotted right away because I’m impatient lol No real issues yet.

I’ve really wanted to green it up but anything not right next to the window can struggle. I appreciate the tips of some other plants to consider. My question is where do you see yourself in the next few years. You have quit your job at the house plant store and have a really successful CZcams channel. What next? Summer Rayne’s Homestead Brooklyn has expanded to online tutorials, books etc. Do you see this is something you would be interested in? Do you think you have dreams of opening a physical plant store in the future or would you do an online store, as that has been an increasingly popular market place and doesn’t have the overheads of a physical store. I’d be really interested to see where you plan to be in the next few years. I appreciate your weekly content and it’s always informative and entertaining. Have a great day.

I love your honesty and I chuckle at your distaste for calathea, especially Ornata. I've had one for about 2 months and your right..its very picky like its too good to be in my house. It loses a leaf then gains a leaf. Makes no sense to me. 🤪

Since January I’ve had a small fiddle leaf fig in a north facing window and it’s grown 4 leaves 😳 and not dropped any so far and I’m pretty impressed after seeing so many videos say they’re finicky or very hard too keep alive without certain lighting and water schedules

I have mine in a north facing window with a grow light and it’s thrived the past couple months. I find that the size of the window matters a lot. As well as if there are buildings nearby. The three lots around my window are vacant so it’s purely unfiltered northern exposure.

Q&A Became a new fan. And has been watching for hours. I can’t find any videos talking about grow light. I unfortunate having low light living room but there are more space and built in shelves that I wanna put plants on it. Can you give some insights about grow lights and how do you use it?
Love your honesty and glittery eyes when you are excited about some particular plant. 😄 enjoy your videos so far :)

I find scindapsus are so picky for me! They're healthy as far as I know, but in low light their leaves are suuper small and they skip nodes really often. I know the leaves can improve if given something to climb, but I'm stubborn and don't wanna do that haha

I have zero issues with everything else I've purchased this year but my scindapsus hates life. It just goes through cycles of curling leaves, uncurling leaves, then putting out tiny leaves.

Hi Nick! Q&A: Since you've lived alone a few months now, do you miss having a roommate, and does Muffin seem more content without another cat around? This was another great video! I haven't tried it yet, but I'm so tempted to try a small ZZ plant in my bathroom with no window. I've had a couple of the Kangaroo Paw ferns, but lost them. I don't think I was consistent enough with watering them. I have a couple of Aglaonema. One has a lot of pink in the leaves and the other is mostly green (not doing very well). I'd love to find the chocolate one. I'd love to find the Pellionia pulchra, too. It's such a cute little plant. And of course, I LOVE my ZZ plants! I think a Q&A would be great! The other ?????'s I would ask have already been asked below and I gave them a thumbs up. Thank you so much for sharing!

  • @leaflovelaughwmissy2334

Hi Nick! I have heard lots and lots about ZZ plants and I treat mine much like I treat my snake plants...I ignore them, but they seem to be looking worse and worse :-( I just got a Scindapsus Pictus Exotica yesterday. Didn't know it was medium light. It's such a beauty. My Argyraeus is not doing A THING! Just gonna let it sit, though. It isn't dying so that's good. Always love the knowledge and experience you share in your vids.

Q&A: Hi Nick! I just want to say first that I really enjoy your videos! My first question is : plant collecting and growing has become a real and probaly the only sustained hobby of mine but I find that this is a really lonely hobby. Do you find that too or is there some way that you connect regularly with nearby plant enthusiests?
Also a second question is : when I first started getting into plants i thought monsteras and sanseverias were the ugliest looking plants and didnt understand what the hype was. I was sure that those two were something that I would never have in my home but two types of sanseverias and a monstera are now part of my collection. Maybe i just saw too many blog posts of them and lost my aesthetic senses. But were there any plants like this for you? would be interested in knowing :)
