- The best LOW light (not NO light!) houseplants that I grow in my home. I grow all these plants in the darkest corners of my home and they seem to not only survive but thrive. Thanks for watching!
I should mention -- Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) definitely belongs on this list, but I wanted to discuss some less-talked-about plants.
1) Zamioculcas zamiifolia (ZZ Plant)
2) Ctenanthe sp.
3) Dracaena sp.
4) Spathiphyllum "Domino"
5) Aglaonema sp. (Chinese Evergreen)

I got a zz raven from Walmart of all places the other day for $5. I am so excited I just needed to tell someone.
Very excited for you! I ordered one from a special plant shop for triple that xD
I got a Peperomia Obtusifolia 2 days ago and even I needed to tell someone. I'm so in love with it that I just keep looking at it 😆
Wooooahhhh!!!! Awesome!
I once bought a Croton for a little under that 😂😂 I know the thrill!
thats adorable
"Don't water it more than you pay your rent." That's actually super helpful
What is that even supposed to mean
@@Kuhoochandra once a month
Kuhoo Not Kuhu I had to think about it too 😂 he means you pay your rent once a month, so don’t water your plants more than once a month
so true. i am a chronic over waterer. now i just water my plants when ever i get paid. lol
Chg🇦🇹😃😃
I love watching people love their plants. It makes me happy to see your eyes light up at their beauty and light.
For real!!
Same here.
Plants, especially flowers, are no contest proof of God.
Snake plants do great in low light too. Lively video. Ty
Also my pothos are like the die hard of house plants for me and has done great in low light spots.
That True!
now belong to dracaenas so technically he did mention them
ugly sods though.
I literally left a dracaena in my room at home while I was at college for a couple months. My parents didn't take care of it and it was still fine. I brought her with me tis year and she's thriving. They're indestructable.
Mine is fifteen feet away from the nearest window and I think I have watered it twice this year. It just keeps growing.
This guy deserves a lot more subscribers.
He got a lot more since!!! :D
A video on grow lights please!!! Somebody needs to do one
Yes plz.
Your love and appreciation for plants is infectious!
That's a fantastic way to think about it! "If you water this plant more than you pay your rent, it's too much." 😅
I have a couple of HUGE ZZ plants in my home - have had them for years. I water them every week, and kind of a lot of water - like half a pitcher. Never had any problems with mushiness or over watering. They get medium light. Just wanted to add my own experience. They are totally fool-proof, grow fast, gorgeous.
I have a Chinese Evergreen that I got about 5 years ago before I was really into plants and it has survived so much lol. It currently has its first ever flowers which is so awesome!!! Thanks for another good video 🙂
Thanks....so very helpful.... never got the 'low light, low water' connection before. 'Benign Neglect' will now be my mantra for some of my plants
I get so excited whenever you upload new videos. I even rewatched your old ones. I love your love for plants. Thank you for the positive vibes!
LOVE my Aglaonemas. I keep them in the darkest areas of my condo, furthest away from any windows. I equally only water about every 3 weeks or so and they continue to thrive and push new growth. I've had surprisingly good look with my Maranta Leuconeura/prayer plant but continue to fail with Calatheas. I have a Calathea Undulata and Calathea Zebrina. I thought the Undulata would be easier since the leaves are a different texture but It's proving to be equally challenging. :-/ I'm looking for a Stromanthes or Ctenanthes to try. The Norfolk Pine is another easy low light pant that I wish got more love and recognition by other plant enthusiasts. I've found it to be such a great easy going plant.. :-)
ALSO, Thank you for being so specific about your watering schedule and watering technique. I find that others who provide online videos about plant care consider once a week 'rarely' watering their plant and almost always recommend full saturation which does not work if your climate is more humid or if your plants are not receiving enough light. Especially if they're not in the correct soil mixture or pot with drainage holes.
Nick! You're amazing. Thanks for the thoughtful guidance. You're a natural.
In Australia we *generally* pay rent once a week - definitely too often to water your Zz
Whaaaa...really?
@@skamozfan A lot of employers here pay on a weekly basis
@@HuyLy94 that's crazy!!! We pay 1 a month in the states as most people get paid biweekly.
How much do you end up paying monthly if you don’t mind me asking
@@quetzally6499 The rent in Sydney is about $450 to $700 a week ($1800 - 2800 p/m) for a 1 bedroom apartment. In the regional city where I live rents would be closer to $300 - $500 ($1200 - 2000 p/m) per week for a 1 bedroom apartment. A room in a share house will cost about $150 - $300 ($600 - 1200 p/m) here.
Hi Nick ...you are the best !!!! I love the way you pronounce these multi syllable words so effortlessly!!!
Nick, thank you for your enthusiasm and wonderful smile 💕
Love all your tips for my plants. Thanks so much. Your place looks wonderful!!
I like your choices. I held off for a very long time to get a ZZ plant but then realized the Raven would work really well in my bathroom which is gray, white, and black. There's one good-sized window so that light should be just right.
I can't appreciate dracaenas or give them the praise they are due because they remind me of working in the office for 35 years and I just want to forget that :) I'm certain the peace lilies in the office survived on a diet of coffee.
You, my dear are a gem for this. Thank you!
We have this Spathiphyllum at work (school library). We forgot to put it away from direct light before summer vacations (2 months in my country), so it looked totally dead when we went back (all other plants were living there best lives, they are in plastic pots with built-in water reserve). So we gently plucked all the dead leaves that would not resist when we would touch it, give it a good splash and put it in a less sunny area. Oh boy did it revived, we even got 3 splendid flowers a few months later. And it survived the 2 months lockdown without watering it before like it never happened.
Love that you defined the amount of light at the beginning. Thanks for all your work.
its obvious that you love your plants.. its a pleasure to watch you, talk about plants ;)
TFS I’m new too being a plant mom and I learned some good stuff from you.... plants are life especially in this new world way of living....👌🏾😊
Yo👑 !!! thank you and I love rescuing them also and getting them when they're babies
I love 💚 your light and energy is like you are "phenomenally personified " lmol
Thank you!! I always get great information from your videos!
I've had great success growing my Sansevieria trifasciata in my office with no windows and an office with a window 100ft away. I've had it a year and it's miraculously grown a pretty decent amount.
Super selection of low light plant!🌿🌱🍃
Omg I just hit the subscribe button not only because I'm obsessed with plants but also because you look BEAUTIFUL. I'm in love.
Your videos are always so helpful. Thanks for sharing
this guy is a good gardener, love it very much. thanks for the tips, worth
Excellent video, I pray you and the grands are well and Happy
thank you for sharing your fabulous collection!
Hi Nick, love your videos and all of your beautiful plants!! Can you do a video on grow lights? I need to get some soon and need some suggestions! Thanks for your very informative videos!
I 2nd this idea!
Me too!!!
Yes 👍🏻
YES please!!
Please
I've grown a couple of Peace Lilies, & they've been one of the easiest plants for me.
I would say to put them right next to a window (or glass door) with bright indirect light.
Make sure it has good drainage, and just water it when the soil is dry, or if the leaves start to droop. It will perk up again within a few hours. However, if you have been watering it and the leaves droop, it probably has had too much water and you should let it dry out.
Love this video! Recently sold my house and moved into an apartment which I love, but had to give away lots of plants. I don't have the light that I did in the house, but still sufficent for most plants and your video is very helpful. Love the statement about watering the ZZ when you pay rent and that is great adivice. That you Nick.
Brilliant video on the Top 5 low light houseplants, thanks so much for sharing Nick XXXX
Great guidance from a true subject matter expert who actually works in plant world. Thanks!
Glad I came across this. I’ve been watering my zizi like em every 1-2 weeks. No wonder it hates me! Will lay off for sure. Thank you!
Saw my first Raven ZZ in the store the other day, never seen one before, and I just had to get it. It's amazing.
yes ZZ! I have 2 and love them! the new growth is the coolest light green little pupa! I ordered a Raven ZZ today online and I hope it is not a scam!!
I use tap water for most of my plants except for my fiddle leaf fig. that queen requires so much attention
Great top 5 low light plants. I agree with all your picks and appreciate all of your great information for care. Tha ks for sharing☺👍❤.
I admire and respect you because it's obvious that you love plants.
Great choices and all of the plants that you featured were in such good condition :)
Oh man i love ur green plants collections
Apart from all the useful info and wonderful enthusiasm, 1:20 reminded me to pay my rent... and water my 2 ZZ plants :D
Found this video very helpful. Especially about the ZZ plant...beautiful plant, easy to grow.
Thanks for all the information! I now will be trolling the stores for one of the low light plants you have mentioned.😁👍
A few months ago I walked into my favorite plant nursery here in Arizona looking for a variegated Rubber Tree. They didn’t have any in but they did have Domino Peace Lily. I came home with a gorgeous DPL and I just love her!
Loved your video. I learned so much. I had no clue about the fluoride. This is the first time I’ve heard of it. I always wondered why some of my plants got that annoying burnt tip. Thanks so much! Your house must have the cleanest air!
Thanks, you are really fun to listen to!
I looooooove you, and your plants. Amazing video
I have all of the ones you've suggested! Or I have a couple of different varieties that you've mentioned. Good to know that I've got them in the right places in my home. Thanks for the informational video!
EXCELLENT - beautifully presented, thank you 🙏
Love your videos. That was very helpful.
This is the first low light plant list that I've seen without pothos or snakeplant! Thank you for these amazing suggestions!
Pothos or snakeplants aren't really low light, perhaps I would say it's in between the two. My pothos lost her beautiful color after I put her 2 meters from the window, after I put it 1 meter closer, the beautiful color return. Similar things goes on to my snakeplant and fern -- growth of new leaves stopped or even died off when I put them 1 meter from the window, actually they have to sit pretty near the window to ensure proper growth!
So Connie Snake plants like bright light actually but they will “fail to die” for a long time. Until they finally stop failing. :-)
Love the information. I got the Chinese evergreen and it's a beautiful plant. I am so glad I got it.
Love it. Thankyou for sharing!
Very fine instructions given very well.
I water my ZZs every 2-3 weeks and they've been thriving (both have put off 3 new stems this summer!)
Glad this I came across this video. Just got a red emerald a couple of weeks ago and I didn't think she liked me. Now, I think I've been watering her tooo heavy. THANK YOU!!!!!
Great video! Just came across your channel and it's awesome!! Thank you!
Thank you for the information and tips!
Cool, I didn't know Chinese Evergreen plants are ok in low light, thanks for the info, I might get one then Lol. Your right about the Peace lily, a lot of people says it's an easy plant but not everyone can grow it.
Killed my first peace lily. I overdid the "humidity"
Love watching your videos. You're so thorough and I always learn so much! I remember you mentioning having an excel spreadsheet to track your watering habits. I'd love to see how you set that up 😊 I have a spreadsheet too but I dont love my formatting
Thanks. I love these plants.
That's so much for sharing your knowledge.
You are clear and concise. Thanks
Enjoyed your video and thanks for sharing.
🙈 I’ve been overwatering my ZZ’s. I’m pretty sure you just saved them. Thank you!!!
Peace lilies are super easy...they just love a water well and will grow in any light level.
Nice video.
Peace lilies are not as low light as they’re rumored to be. In my experience they need a lot of indirect bright light, for many hours a day, regular fertilizing, and need to dry out until they start to hint at drooping before soaking them with filtered water.
I have one that is 8 years old....low light and never been fertilized...and blooms regularly! 🤷🏻♂️
I agree with the light however I do not let my peacefully droop I keep the soil sightly moist just not soaking wet... They say that it makes the plant weaker and shortens the life span when it droops
No fertilizer either
I agree when I saw it as one of his plants i had to disagree too. Just brought two of them and I’ve learned already they need a good amount of indirect sun
Yup! They do need bright indirect light. Mine also get watered frequently, very damp soil. I've had mine for 5 or 6 years
Super advice. Ty for showing us other plants than pothos!
I bought a peace lily which I kept in my office with no windows (just typical fluorescent lighting) and it did pretty well. It stopped flowering but it did keep growing. I had it for about 8 months in that space and it was fine. I watered it once a week and never had an issue. I eventually gave it to my sister and the plant is now deceased. I recently bought another peace lily and gave it to my mom last week since her apartment is pretty low-light. Hopefully, this one fares better.
Beautiful plant☘️🌿🌱
Awesome tips. Now I know what plants to get for my home
I like the way you sound... I like the way you look... & I love your presentation. And, thanks to you (google & other youtubes were no help), I now know the name of that new plant I just bought: it's a coffee plant! I know this NOW because I saw your house tour Tuber (viewed after this tuber).
Anyway, Thanks, Nick!
Good picks Nick, I have the ZZ plant sitting about 6 to 7 feet away from my two windows and it seems to be happy there, I would love to find a black ZZplant to put next to it, but for now it's on my wish list. I would also like to get both of those Calathias, I have the Medallion Calathia and find it is more fussy than my Rattlesnake and Triostar. I haven't had the pleasure of buying a Dracena yet, I'm still on the lookout for the perfect one, I love the structure of these and how they put them in the pots. I do have two peace lily's one being the common green one and the other is the Domino variegated, this one is one of my oldest plants it started out just tiny in a 4 inch pot some 15 or so years ago and is 5 times at least bigger and is also one of my favorite plants, I actually had a small one growing to the side that I popped into a pot for my daughter and she just loves it. And of course I have 5 different varieties of Aglaonema, four of the colorful ones and the Silver Bay which I really love. Thank you Nick for sharing this video,at least after watching this video I know that where I have these plants in my own home I got it right.
Terrific video👍👍👍my European 120 year old house says "thank you"😁
I have my Zamioculcas zamiifolia in my windowsless toilet, without light most of the day. It thrives!! I have had it for one year now and it´s growing even! :)
What about watering of this zz plant is it weekly or biweekly ??
Thank You for a very good piece of information.
Wow, beautiful colletion.
Excellent video 👍!
Good man! Good info.
I learned a lot with this vedio about. House plants and your plants are so beautiful and pretty watching from California stay safe
Thanks for the heads up. I have my draecena marginata and my corn plant in front of my patio door that faces South.
Excellent video!
Nice information. thanks for sharing this video 😃
My wintergreen aglaonema is flowering right now! So fun!
Awww I finally got my very own Ctenanthe Burle Marxii. Been wanting it since the first time I saw it at a botanical garden a couple years ago. The prayer plant is slowly growing.
Oh fabulous...fabulous I tell you.
My agleonema actually flowered this past summer o have the green variety and when I saw it coming in I watching it everyday for a month to see what was going to happen best this to ever happen!!
Ahhh fluoride burn must be what's browning up my calathea makoyana!! Ugh guess I'll start using distilled water.
Damien H i let my water sit for 24hrs before using to water to avoid the yellowing
@@grannyali6567 that doesn't remove fluoride tho
@@Atomicqueen9 thx
Excellent video and explanations.
ZZ is seriously the best starter plant for anyone & seriously I water mine maybe once a month at the most twice a month. I have mine off to the side of a kitchen window & it’s been there over a year! I just ordered the smaller version & I’ll get the raven when I come across it one day.
Nick you should do a video on the TDS of your water. I use distilled on some plants in the house & my sarracenia & pinguicula due to the TDS here in California
Hi. Im a newbie plant dad here. I have peace lily, sensation plant, zz, and chinese ever green. Im considering the fish bone plant. Thats so cute! Im from Manila btw. Have a good one! 😊🌱
I've been loving the colorful aglaonema lately. My latest is the chocolate.
Great video 👍🏼
