I agree about the Alocasia, but I still love it. I totally disagree about the Birken. Mine grows like crazy, has never had pests of any kind, and has not reverted after two years. Seems like there was one more that I can't agree with, but I can't think what it is. Oh well, everyone is entitled to their opinion. 😁

@@similis1134 I’ve heard mixed reviews on those. I feel like I have more luck with Marantas. I have a variegated green Maranta that I grew from a one leaf cutting about four years ago, and it’s doing great. I had been afraid to try fancier Maranta because of the Prayer Plant stigma of being difficult, but I recently picked up a Lemon Lime. So far, so good. I’m hoping it will thrive for me like the regular green one has, but time will tell!

Not sure what's prompting these more high energy sass videos, but they are just what I need, for what I'm going through in life right now. Thank you, Nick. Ah the corn plant. I've never seen a plant in a frat house, then again, haven't been in many to know. With that said, the first thing I bought in my college apartment was two corn plants, they were named Sven and Ole. They took on their own personas. We would say good morning to them every day, and we mourned their loss years after college. Maybe not a prized plant, but it was definitely a entry point for me.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. About the only plant(s) that I dislike are cacti. Probably because I grew up on a ranch and spent a lot of time digging them out of my feet/hands growing up. LOL I love my Calathea Fusion White, and 'Ornata' sold under the name of 'Beauty Star'. I've had the former since October 2023, and the later since May 2023, both of them are doing great, and not a single issue of any kind with pests - knock on wood. Of course, I do have a secret weapon! I live on a farm, in a 100 year old farm house that I can't keep the spiders out of. I noticed early on when I got back into house plants that at least one plant in every grouping had a spider that had taken up residence in it. Natural pest control! Being a farm girl, I don't have a problem with spiders, snakes, or other creatures so it works out well! :)

Here's a great tip for the inch plants(tradescantia)!! Any time they're moved(outdoor to indoor or indoor to outdoor) they like to get leggy. As crawlers they'll end up sprawling and uglying up their pots. I cut mine almost all the way back whenever it starts to go leggy on me and it fills back out within a couple months. The best indoor setup I've seen with them was one of those hanging bags. The vines rooted as they crawled down it leaving a full look. I use it for ground cover in my flowerbeds. It grows great on the ground

The benjamin ficus is PERFECT for a home where you can place it in a perfect corner where it never gets hit by a draft, nor bumped by humans or pets, nor moved even an inch, and will enjoy a comfortable and even lighting and humidity throughout the year and yet is so very in your eyeline and way enough to enjoy a very regular watering.
In those conditions it can be really quite pretty.
Mind you, if you start a new hobby that makes a sound and/or requires movement, or change out your speakers or try out new music, it may decide to drop it's leaves anyways.

Brilliant I totally agree with your opinions. So many people buy many of these plants in stores often by the checkout without a thought as to they requirements or suitability. They are usually just the ones the stores can get a good deal with. To be honest if anything is trending then it usually turns me off. I love Aglaonema as they are so forgiving when it comes to positioning away from windows. I just had an Aglaonema "crete" delivered today and I can't stop looking at it , such a beautiful colouration and pinky stems. Also 2 of my airplants decided to reveal their blooms today . I am in plant heaven 😊. Out of interest what is your thought on watering all plants with rain water?

I love the red Aglaonemas!! Rain water is great - it's too difficult for me to bother collecting with my living situation, but it's a better option than tap, that's for sure!

I guess the only one I’m on the fence on from your choices is the ficus benjamina. I’ve had mine for almost 20 years and he’s been a drama queen for almost all of those. But the other day as I was repotting him and looking at his big tree roots, wonky branches and fuzzy green head (he likes to grow out on top), I realized he’s one of my favorite plants. He’s been with me through several moves and grown to be around 1,65 m ish tall.

Nick you are hilarious! I will agree with you especially about the Bunny ear cactus! I can't tell you how many times I try to move this plant and it gets me. I used to have about 5 Alocasia's, now just one. 🤣I guess I have to go shop for some Aglaonemas. Thanks Nick

In my experience inch plants can actually be incredibly beautiful. I have a purple heart that grows straight up because i keep it in a low light situation. The stems have turned green with bright pink and purple leaves. The trick is to cut stems that you dont love every few months.

I giggled in glee over most of these. I DO have a nice White Fusion that lives by its own humidifier, but I've also told it that it is only 25 steps to my compost bin if it falters in any way. Some of the plants you mentioned I haven't grown for many many years just because of the reasons you have given; the croton, dieffenbachia, ficus, palms, etc etc. Great video!

I had a birkin for several years and never had a revert issue with it. Its growth pattern became too unruly so I chopped it up and trashed it.
I agree with hating the bunny ears cacti. They need to have big "DO NOT TOUCH" signs attach to them when they are being sold in stores.
I think those tall, three stalks corn plants are big in Asian households.
I don't mind braided tube snake plant. I personally wouldn't buy them but I do think it looks more interesting than the non-braided one.

Fittonia, bromelia, orchids and begonia can also go on this list for me. I can't keep them alive long enough to really enjoy them or never get them to flower again.
Do love Alocasia because once I put them in pon, they thrive in my care and I'm slowly switching out the ones (mostly Philodendron) than need a mosspole. Philodendron used to be my favourite genus, but after a few years of plantcare, I just can't with the fast growing mosspole climbers. Too much work. So now I mostly want Anthurium without a pole and Alocasia. Also love hanging plants. And I love my Philodendron el choco red and jose buono because of the smaller spacing, so they don't climb as fast. My Splendid is just outgrowing the mosspole like every 2 months, which is just too much, even though that one has the prettiest leafs😅

Hi Nick! I have to say that I love Birkins. I've had trouble with them, but i keep trying. In fact I just bought another one. It is in a self-watering pot, so I hope that helps! I do agree that Aglaonema are a better choice for some plants. I've had trouble with them, too, but trying to get their watering down. I just bought one, and it is in a self-watering pot, too. Fingers crossed for it and the Birkin. ;-) This is a fun video, and I agree with all of the other plants you picked. Thank you so much for sharing!

I pretty much agree, except for the Alocasia. I have many of them, and as long as I grow them in pon and selfwatering pots, they have never given me any problems. I agree with you when you recommend Aglonemas, they're just..great! Fun video 😊💚

I agree with most of the list. Although I have found that I like ficus. I bought my FLF on clearance at $7 and it lives, and I’m somehow able to keep a Benjamina alive as well as some other varieties. I would add Calathea peacock varieties and aluminum plant to the list. Oh and I have a Corn plant that I received as an apartment gift 20 years ago.

Agree with most and with recommending aglaonemas. I would add to it all tradescantias (there is something about the look of their stems that I don't like), begonias (you do you, they are just not for me), and I hard-pass on all ferns. I got a Birken for $7 at a grocery store last year and it is growing well with little attention and hasn't reverted yet. Calling that a win.

I think that the Alocasias that are more robust seem to fair better indoors. e.g. My Alocasia Tiny Dancer seems to keep all its leaves as it forms a strange leafy mass upwards. It kind of looks like Cthulhu mated with an alocasia lmao

I have never ever had any issues with my benjaminas, not even bringing them home from the store. I've made several new plants from cuttings easily and given them away and my friends love them - my ficus triangularis however, talk about a drama queen. I breathe the wrong way and it drops leaves. Definitely thought it was going to die after I brought it home and it dropped most of its leaves, stems started to go black, but I hard-trimmed it back and put it in a sunny spot. It's pushing out slow new growth now, here's hoping it makes it to spring.

Omg, I thought I was the only one who hates most of these. Sitting here drinking my morning coffee, looking around at the plants, and thinking, "How soon can I dump this in the mulch pile?" Just had a minor shoulder surgery and can't pick up anything over 5 pounds for a few days. 🤔 Maybe I can hire a neighborhood kid to come over and clear them out. Thanks for the laugh...and for the optimism! 😂

I bought a braided sansevieria. The lady in the shop said oh I love these they look so nice braided. My response was. I'm undoing the second I get home. Its doing very well now
My mum bought me an alocasia which is very cute but has spider mites all the time. If I'd bought it I would have binned it hehe
I am not a fan of most begonia and variegated plants. They look ill or like half cleaned bird poop. And painted plants unset me
Your list it pretty much bang on.

I saw the title of the video and thought, well, I’m not going to hate any of these plants-I love plants! Then one by one as you went through your list, I had to agree with basically the entire list, possibly minus the croton and the inch plant, which for me are not houseplants and I have them outside in my garden, in the ground, mostly as accent plants to add a bit of color where needed. Probably they don’t get as many pests outside and I’ve never had a problem, but I wont be digging them up to bring them inside anytime soon!
