Fox Fork Lowers & Air Spring Service + GRIP2 Damper Install

- I forgot to mention a few things in the video that I would like to add or edit:
1) You will also need to inject 3cc of Fox 20wt Gold Oil into the positive chamber of the air spring. I forgot to film and edit that part into this video. We will now mix Slickoleum and 20wt Gold oil together to create about 3cc's of the mixture, and then slather that on top of the air spring piston and lightly around the seals.
2) The reason this fork sucked down into it's travel was not due to the amount of grease on top of the air spring piston, it was simply because I let the air out too quickly. Just let the air out more slowly and hold the fork up in it's travel and that will not happen.
3) If your fork is having issues either losing air, feeling like there's something wrong but you can't pinpoint the issue, or the fork just has tons and tons of riding on it, I would recommend replacing the seals on the air spring while you're in there.

THIS VIDEO IS LONG! And I wanted it to be! I wanted to create the ultimate video guide to servicing a Fox fork, including my recommended job of servicing the air spring, and also how to install the GRIP2 damper if you've just purchased one from me.
This video is meant to be watched while you're servicing your fork for either the first time, or just if you want to learn a bunch of cool tips that help make the job easier and turn out as good as possible.

I’m gonna have some trouble communicating how incredibly helpful and in-depth to the extreme that this video was, I now feel like I literally know forks inside and out and feel that I would be confident enough to have a go of the lower leg and air spring service (which I didn’t really know what it was before). So thank you for putting in the huge amount of time to explain this reasonably understandable process in such incredible super extreme detail, and i now know what an air spring is and what it does and how to service it. I love these mechanic Monday videos and look forward to the amazing future episodes!
Thanks SO much Rowan! I'm at a loss for words!! My mission has been accomplished!
I completely agree with Rowan ! I’ve never seen such a valuable videos, guides od manuals as those from you ! Have been watching more from you this morning and this one made me subscribing a even expressing my appreciation of you and your way of doing videos. Have been showing this video Today to 2 more friends of mine and we all feel now confident doing this level of servis ourselves. Thank you ! You represent the role model of how guide videos should be done. When you advise to clean inside of guffers/main bushing, you also explain why. When you mention negative chamber, you expain what it is and what it does. Amazing and best ever !
Omg, legend. Actually full detail and sharing all the nuances and things to look for. Awesome. I wish there was more content like this on CZcams... Thank you!!!
One of the best and most comprehensive tutorials out there!! Rockshox next please!!
Thanks a ton! I wanted to make a full-on video guide rather than just a 5 minutes video without showing how to actually do the things like every other video out there haha.
@@TheLostCoPlease make a tutorial whit the suntour cadtidge pcs (durolux, auron and aion).
In Internet don't have good information and tutorial about this.
The Lost Co. , this is NOT "one of the best" Fox Fork tutorial, it is THE BEST! Good job
@@santiagofuenzalida5168 suntour suspension are good but that's the problem: they are not popular, suntour has made itself known not for their good products, but for their really low end xct/xcm and xcr forks. since they are not populare there aren't any tutorial. suntour website has some video for forks service, check that
Ewwww, rock shox
If your gonna make a tutorial...go big! All your videos are so comprehensive. Thanks for doing that. It must take so much time to make these videos and your audience takes notice. 👍
Haha thats my attitude for sure!
Thanks for thinking about how long this takes, as this video took about 2.5 entire days to finish. But it feels great when the video is done and uploaded 👍👍👍
U hi no po5 my porn

That is my fork in the video! Thanks Mike, I appreciate the attention to detail and how clean all the prep work was. Now I can service my own fork, but will surely grab the parts from you!
Anytime man! Thanks again for sending that fork in, you'll be stoked on how the fork feels with the new damper and no air stuck in the negative air chamber!
Best fork service/rebuild tutorial I've found online. Newbies like me need this level of detail to avoid screwing something up! Initially I wouldn't have even thought of doing the air spring service with the lowers but now I'm confidently going for it. Thanks for putting in the effort ++++
I watched this whole video and never skipped through and I’m actually loving it! Very in detail and shows everything. Well made video.
This is brilliant. Plenty of detail & excellent production value. Thanks mate!
Thanks for your ability to clearly explain this process. You are so detail oriented and precise. Love it. I’ll be watching more of your tutorials for sure.
Man you're a blessing to have in the mountain bike world. All of your videos are so helpful and well made. Cheers for making my DIY bike maintenance and suspension set up a breeze!
the best video I've ever watched! I've done my oil service on my Fox forks many times but still learned a bunch - thank you!!
One of the best fork service videos out there! Plus, I loved the organization. Thanks!
Man, your really thorough. Love the little pro tips that only someone with experience can share.
Best fork tutorial period. I like the syringe idea for fluid fill. Ordered one right now! Thank you
Probably the clearest demo I have ever seen. Thanks for that, I will definitely give that a go.
Best fork service video I've ever seen. Nice! Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to my Grip2 arriving and getting it on my fork. I really appreciate the work you put in to make this tutorial.
I've watched quite a few fork service "how to" videos, and this without a doubt the best and most comprehensive video I've seen. Well done!
I've watched heaps of lower leg services ready to do it myself. I would say I would have been guessing until I saw this video. Amazingly helpful. Great work dude!
The best video i have seen on the subject. Answers all the questions anyone could have. Brilliant!!
Это было великолепно! Одно из самых увлекательных видео, просмотренных за последнее время! Посмотрел на одном дыхании, спасибо за ваш труд!
BRO! This must go to my top5 internet moments ever! Thanks. There's no, however, how-to video for the Float DPS rear shock maintenance and the internet needs it! Loved to see that.
Wow I cant tell you how thankful I am for putting this video up! So thorough and I feel like a pro when it comes to shocks now!
Thank you so much for taking the time to create such a quality 'how to' video. Very very appreciated!!
Great Video! Super informative and helpful and entertaining!
On top of that, I couldn't agree more on your habit of keeping all the parts in the right order and constantly making sure everything is tidy and clean!!!
It just makes your life sooo much easier!
I am learning the craft of bike mechanic myself (Spezialized concept store... I love it!) and constantly trying to get my colleagues to develope that habit... ;)
Loving your videos!
Keep up the great work!
I finished watching this for fun and when I looked up, I was like, when did it get dark?! Lol 10 out of 10 video man!
Hi Mike, for me it is the ultimate video, for servicing a fox 36 grip2!
Anything else is said in the other comments!
You create an awesome vid!
That's why i'm a big fan of your channel!
Keep going!
Cheers from Heidelberg Germany
Best suspension explanation video evvvaaaaaa!! I now feel confident enough to give a lower leg and air spring service a go, and i now also know what an air spring is, what it looks like and what it does! I love your mechanic Monday videos and am excited to future episodes!
Btw, I wrote another incredibly long comment expressing my gratitude but sadly lost it in my attempt to post it ☹️
Great in depth tutorial! and lots of helpful little pointers to make the work much easier. THANK YOU!
You definitely know your stuff, one of THE BEST service videos,I would certainly take my forks to you
Probably the best video ever on how to service a fox fork. Looking forward to have a video like this for the rear shock
Excellent video. I normally remove (and push up the stanchion) the outer spring on the seal to make the seal easier to install. After the lower is on, I reinstall the springs.
Loved the video; was able to get a lot of information that I haven’t seen before. Thanks again for the detailed instructions.
Sweeet! I'm stoked you both enjoyed the video and learned something! My two goals accomplished 😁
I followed every step of your video and my fork works like a new one now ! Thank you so much from France ;)
Fantastic video and pleasant personality. Thank you for helping this old guy learn the best way to service Fox 36 Grip 2 forks. Thanks so much
Exactly what I was looking for! Thanks so much for the ultra-detailed tutorial!
You just cleared up so much for me. I feel like I now have the confidence to do this myself. I've got the tools and parts to bump up the travel on my grip 2 fork to 150. Just need the 5 wt oil now. The guy at my shop said to just use the gold in both sides, but after some investigation and watching this video I'm going to hold off until the 5wt comes in.
Still the best video out there on fork maintenance... GREAT JOB
Best and most easily understood MTB maintenance videos out there! You speak layman's language and your show-and-tell technique is SUPERB! Keep up the great work.....most appreciated, useful, and enjoyable.
Thanks!! I try my best to be absolutely straightforward with everything. I also work on cars as a hobby, and its always annoying watching tutorials and they're super vague, so I want to make sure all of my mechanic videos are very informative rather than just vague.
Very comprehensive tutorial, I plan to do a full service and add a GRIP on my Fox 34 Float. Thanks!
I’ve watched many fork servicing videos, some quite good, but none come close to the way you cover everything for the layman. Brilliant and entertaining too.
Thanks for posting this video it was exactly what I was looking for. I picked up a grip2 damper and some accessories at your site and followed your video during the install.
Thanks for sharing. I am impressed by your professionalism and charisma! Such a nice video to watch and learn!
Great video, I pretty much knew all this stuff , but it's always fun to watch how other people work and it was definitely the most indepth one I've seen. No editing over stuff or vague details so for someone's first time it would be great to follow. I am currently building up a new bike and got a killer deal on a 2018 fox 36. I was actually considering dropping the lowers off to check lube and grease seals so I am glad we are on the same page. Maybe come the time for a full rebuild I'll consider the damper upgrade. 👍
This are the best service videos I've seen. Please keep the coming!
Thank you for this video. Did mine in about 45 minutes watching your video. Thanks for some of the shortcuts and cost saving. Pounding in the dust shields with a $40 tool kind of sucked. But saving $50 per side for the fox tool to break the stiction between both sides helped. Thanks a lot
This guy is seriously awesome!!! So detailed with great video perspective... Exactly the Fork I have and the the upgrades I want/need to do. THANKS to the THE LOST CO.
Defently the best video for servicing these forks. You saved my life 😄.
Great info!! Just bought a stump jumper today with fox forks so I’m trying to learn as much as possible. It’s been a while since I’ve been on and worked on a bike. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you a lot for this excellent video! I am glad you did the proper long video.
Mate, I love the level of analytical detail you have in these Mechanic Monday videos. Keep explaining not just the how, but the why and you’ll have a 100k subs in no time!
Thanks a ton Matt! Thats definitely my goal to actually show how to do things rather than just saying to do it!
Such a great tutorial. Just got done replacing the air spring on my FOX 34 to upgrade it from 130 to 140mm and replacing the seals/servicing the lowers while I was at it. Was using the service guides on the Fox website but this video filled in all of the detailed info and tips, you are awesome! I didn't have a mini-blind adjuster to use for cleaning the lowers so I picked up a large wooden dowel and drilled a big hole in one end. Was then able to just thread a shop rag through the hole and wrap it around the dowel for the cleaning. Thanks again!
As it states "THE ULTIMATE" service guide. I'd say this is the benchmark level against which everything else compared. Hands down best of anything I've ever seen or watched from CZcams.
As it save's me from svearing and make's it possible to save some serious money, I'll go and upgrade my Fox 36 Fit4 2018 with the GRIP2 Damper.
Million thanks!
This video sure came in handy today while swapping a FIT4 for a GRIP2 in my Float 34 fork! Thanks Lost Co!!!
This dude has saved me a lot of money being able to service / swap things myself.
Thanks man! I just finished and rode on the first fork I’ve ever installed a new damper on!!! Thank you for the great video!
Thanks for the awesome video! I used the large socket for the top of the air side to bang in the wipers along with a Harbor Freight rubber mallet. Go slow and just tap in circles around and around the edges till it finally seats all the way. Don't need a specialized tool if you're willing to spend a few minutes per side. I've done this with a lot of other round items with a tight fit, if you just bang on them straight on they will go in cock eyed, but if you slow down a bit and go around the edge it works out.
Wow this video was so good to watch and you were so precise in explaining all the passages. I've watched it only for curiosity but the next time I'll have to do a suspension maintenance I'll going to rewatch it for sure.
🖤. Thank you for this excellent tutorial. I serviced my 34 a couple weeks ago, and after going down the CZcams Rabbit hole then, I have to say that this is the best video I've seen yet on the subject. ✌️💀🤙🍦
Thanks sooo much! That means a lot!!
Amazing and comprehensive video. I wish all bike mechanics were as detailed and caring as you. I have never trusted anyone to work on my bike. If I lived near your shop, I wouldn’t hesitate to bring my bike to you.
Wow. Thank you for this well edited, thorough and very helpful vid! I used it to service my fox 32. The tip you gave for making sure the air can equalize when reassembling the air side is not something that Fox mentions in the owners manual or in their CZcams vid (their vid may be outdated...). Great work!!
Great guide. Very comprehensive and easy to follow.
Thank you for your video, i really appreciate watching this one! Today it was the First time servicing my fox 36. additionally I also upgraded from grip to grip 2. this Video was so helpful , step by step getting things done ✅ one thing I was wondering about - the dust wiper removement. Had some difficulties to remove the original ones. Finally i got it 😅but when installing the new one I decide to go with racing bros (low frinction) and this one was quite easy to be installed , without any tools. Definitely will check out more of your videos 👌🏻
Dude your a fooking legend!!! My fox factory 130mm have been losing travel and to the point I was only getting 60mm of travel. Was thinking it must be negative chamber, watched your vid, and yes!!!! Now I know more about the inner and will give the air spring a clean, even if it doesn't work, thanks for the great tutorial. Hope to be back on the trails soon. If so, we owe you our first born!
Such a great and knowledgable video!!! Can't wait to give this a shot when my fork is due for maintenance.
Thanks man!! Glad you enjoyed it!!
This is a really useful video. I just broke my flimsy FIT cartridge whilst doing a service so can't wait to get my GRIP cartridge in. Thank you.
Hey Mike, i'm from Germany and just wanted to know how to service my Fox 36 by myself. I didn't recon with a full professional instruction video how to consider each step such in detail! Especially i liked the extra advice for good mechanic habits. If i could, 1000 thumbs up four you!
super detail , i wish i see this first time when i do my fork.amazing
Awesome video!!! Thanks for putting in all the details and reasoning! I a handy person and like to do my own servicing of things but I haven't done this before and I sure don't want to screw it up. Thanks again for the time and effort to create this video!!
This video is awesome. Got my fork serviced like it was nothing. Thanks guys!
Thanks so much for this video. So helpful, lots of tips and I really appreciate all the work you put into this!
This is awesome! Best Fox tutorial BY FAR!
Man, this was awesome! One of the best fork tutorials I have ever seen.... Love your channel.
Thanks!!!
Top quality video mate. I found it after just finishing a first attempt lower service on my Fox 36. Oh well, next time I will take the air spring out as mine shot back into the upper stanchion. 🤛🏻💥
This is the best video I’ve ever seen on you tube. I just happen to be getting a grip 2 damper for Christmas so this is perfect timing!
Sweet enjoy it man!!
Must be the best video on a fork service ever. Love it.
Super in depth video. Thanks for posting.
Thank You for taking the time to do this thorough video!
Just did my 2019 fox36 grip2 today, after watching this video again this morning before pulling it down. My air spring had the same massive amount of grease on it, now it feels amazing. no doubt i'll be doing some adjustments to my rebound and compression to fix the faults i would have tuned out before.
I’m doing mine this weekend?
Any tips for a smooth procedure ?
Did you put the 3cc in top of air chamber ok?
Thanks
AWESOME video. Thanks for posting. You make it as easy as it gets.
All the videos on CZcams and this is the only one actually showing a fork tear down in quality.
Best service video I've seen! Well done!
Great video! Most comprehensive one I have found. Many thanks!
Just ordered the grip 2 for my fox 34. Thanks for the awesome video
Thank you so much, watching your video every time I do a lower leg service since I always forget something :P
Thanks for sharing this knowledge.
One of the most comprehensive and we'll presented videos I've watched. It was a real pleasure and I've subscribed.
Regards from S Africa
Clive
This is by far the best servicing video ever!
Thanks a ton!!!
Just used your guide to rebuild my 36 fit 4! Thank you!! Maybe one day I'll grow up and get the grip 2...
The fork seal driver tool made my day. WOW Nice...
Great tutorial I'm even more convinced to leave this to professionals like yourself 😁😁
Thank you for this. I’m going to be servicing my fox 36 for the first time this week and this was super helpful!
Nice man! Good luck, it should go smoothly for you! -Tor
Best fork service video yet!
Great tutorial, have a negitve air problem so found that section super useful, thanks for making it. 👍
Top vid mate! One of the most helpful I have found 👍
Thanks Mark!! Glad you enjoyed it!!
I watched this video from start to finish the other night and then in parts tonight as I took my month old fox 36 apart. The amount of grease in there was ridiculous. I put it back together and it feels like a different fork. QC at fox needs to deal with this, I’m told it’s a common issue. Thanks for making this video (and the others)
Thanks a lot for this superb video mate. Must watch for anyone doing fork service. Cheers
I thought this mechanic was a fellow UBI alumni before I noticed his safety glasses, quality work right here!
So nice! Learned a lot and serviced my fork. Thank you so much!
best turotial out there! helped me so much with air in the negative chamber :*
Best service vid around!
You Are a Beast of a bike mechanic!!!! thanks and keep it up!!!
