    I clicked on the video thinking "table? Nah, I'll watch it for 30 sec just to see the verdict" and I watched the whole thing. Man, Tom is an amazing reviewer. Nice diction, no stuttering, keeps you interested.

    I'd been looking forward to the full review and overview of the table ... it did not disappoint. And I am glad you waited until you could do it justice. Your thoughts on what you would do differently were helpful. I also think the table adds a lot to your reviews and the overall Dice Tower content. Good decision.

    I visited the Geek Chic HQ last summer and had a very similar tour of their tables. This review is very truthful. Their furniture is incredibly high quality and is an investment. I would love to see The Dice Tower review of their 8 Hour Chair, it looks hard to believe, but I have sat in it and it is unbelievably comfortable.

      @Runehorn Před 10 lety +1

      Hey! I know you! I also went to the Geek Chic Office and production area and I was super impressed. It was very worth getting a tour from them. Im shooting for an Emissary table been saving up for one, but have had other house expenses to take care of first, Going to visit their booth at PAX in a few weeks to help solidify my decision on what configuration I want. And yes I also could not believe how comfortable their chairs were after sitting in them.

    My concern with a table like this is if when using it for dining purposes with all the top slats in, how does it (or does it at all) prevent spilled liquids from seeping through the gaps and onto the gaming surfaces below?

    • @stevens5181
      @stevens5181 Před 10 lety

      they do sell waterproof table cloth's to put over them when you plan to eat on it.

  • @biglar155
    @biglar155 Před 10 lety

    I wouldn't mind upgrading my dining room table to something like this but my concern would be a liquid spill on the table top if there was a game left set up underneath.

    • @hypersapien
      @hypersapien Před 7 lety

      They have 2 fabric options, a speed cloth or the felt. His is the latter, though I imagine it's still a preferable surface for cards as compared to a hard surface.

    What are the 2 types of fabric you got on your insert?

    • @steveg7000
      @steveg7000 Před 10 lety +2

      It sounds like the red side is speed cloth and the blue side appears to be velvet. The former provides a low-friction surface, while the other provides a high-friction surface.

    • @fouber
      @fouber Před 10 lety

      Tom calls it felt, but it's worth noting that felt is not a suitable material for gaming. Felt sheds and balls up quickly. I'm not sure what Geek Chiq offers, but it appears to be some kind of microfiber/microsuede, a man-made polyester fabric used in upholstery. Anyone know for sure?

    • @Mackerachi
      @Mackerachi Před 10 lety

      Steve Gale
      Yeah, I wasn't sure if the red side was the Stretch Velveteen or the Speed Cloth, but it does sound more like the Speed Cloth. It sounds like a side with the Stretch and Speed would be better then getting the Velvet at all. Or maybe 2 sides with the Speed Cloth would be better. I figure having 2 colors would be better.

    • @steveg7000
      @steveg7000 Před 10 lety

      Sean F On the Geek Chic website, they say the three fabrics they use are plush velvet, stretch velveteen, and speed cloth. It may well be as Mackerachi suggests, that one side is plush velvet and the other stretch velveteen.

    • @RedBarronST
      @RedBarronST Před 10 lety

      +Steve Gale is correct. The side with the logo on it is the plush velvet. The other side is the stretch velveteen.

      @bjoernjensen398 Před 10 lety

      Looking around 1:00 you see the boards that go inside leaning against the Expedit shelves. Applying those measurements and guessing he picked even measurements the inside boards should yield to about 2,00 m x 1,00 m. At 10:28 he explains he would make it even a little bit longer.

    • @billc8729
      @billc8729 Před 9 lety +1

      It is 3'2"x6' interior. I asked Tom about the length and he said it was 6' long. For the width there are 3 widths and the largest has 5 leaves and 3'2" has 4 leaves as in this video. There is an even thinner version available with just 3 leaves.

  • @Tumpkin2
    @Tumpkin2 Před 10 lety

    Glorified pool table. I understand the high cost, being a cabinetmaker by trade, it has very little to do with the martial cost, it is because it is a custom, speciality product. Not very many people are going to buy it, so if you are going to only sell a few hundred a year, you need to sell it for a lot to keep up with operation costs.

  • @TehMagilla
    @TehMagilla Před 8 lety +6

    Any spill on the wood surface is going to seep around the edges or through the tongue-and-groove and straight onto the felt. Yay!
    And the ability to cut off part of the table is an AMAZING idea combined with a TERRIBLE implementation. You need to be able to cut off the end ACROSS the WIDTH of the table - for games with a small number of people gathered around one end of the table so everyone can reach the board, for for a GM to set up equipment and screens on.

    • @Mark-OutWest
      @Mark-OutWest Před 8 lety

      Agreed. If I'm going to spend this much money for a table it's going to have a full blown top, not insert boards that let debris get through them.

    • @Skarpo89
      @Skarpo89 Před 8 lety +1

      Actually, if it is anything like the one Zee reviewed, it has a sistem so that if any liquid gets between the boards it doesn't fall through but goes to the edge of the table and falls to the floor.

    • @hypersapien
      @hypersapien Před 7 lety

      1) The fabric is a replaceable component. Still would be preferable not to damage it, but its not like you're whole investment is ruined if someone spills on it.
      2) When you order you have the choice to have the leaves run widthwise or lengthwise.
      3) If you know you're going to be playing D&D on it, they offer a special GM station that pulls out like a drawer and folds out into a hard surface with screen.

  • @hypersapien
    @hypersapien Před 7 lety

    The first time I heard of geek chic I had the same reaction most of the commenters here have, "Wow, that'd would be nice to have if I was rich. So overpriced!". But since that time, I've actually ordered one for myself. I came to realize that most people have some sort of hobby that they are willing to drop money on, and if playing games with your friends is one of your primary hobbies, then spending this amount of money isn't really that unreasonable (assuming you're an employed adult with regular income). Some people are into cars and spend more money than that buying multiple vehicles. Some people spend more than that much money on season tickets for a single year of sports games.

      They are the same length. They do not extend end to end exactly due to wood expanding and contracting with the weather. If they made it to fit exactly you would not be able to remove them if the wood expanded from an increase in temperature.

    These tables are for people with a lot of money. Even the chairs are around 800. You can get over a 60" flat screen and a nice couch to watch it on for the price of this table. It runs about 4k, and the Sultan runs 14k to 20k. You can have several very nice things for that amount of money. I'd need to have a really padded bank account to sink this much money into something for my hobby that I already do on tables running 100-1000 bucks at various places. With no difficulty or lack of comfort I might add. If you can afford it, let me know if it is worth it. My guess is no.
