  • Do you fear death? Reflect on that question while watching the Symphony of Davy Jones. I used tracks from 'Dead Man's Chest' OST, recording sessions and unreleased suite, composed by Hans Zimmer.

Pirates of the Caribbean is a series of fantasy swashbuckler comedy films produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and based on Walt Disney's theme park ride of the same name.
Directors of the series include Gore Verbinski (1-3), Rob Marshall (4) and Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg (5). The series is primarily written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (1-4); other writers include Stuart Beattie (1), Jay Wolpert (1) and Jeff Nathanson (5). The stories follow the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley). Characters such as Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and Joshamee Gibbs (Kevin McNally) follow Jack, Will and Elizabeth in the course of the films. The fourth film features Blackbeard (Ian McShane) and Angelica (Penélope Cruz), while the fifth film features Armando Salazar (Javier Bardem), Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites) and Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario). The films take place in a fictional historical setting; a world ruled by the British Empire, the East India Trading Company (based on the real East India Company) and the Spanish Empire, with pirates representing freedom from the ruling powers.
Davy Jones is a fictional character in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, portrayed by Bill Nighy. He appears in the second and third films, Dead Man's Chest and At World's End, respectively, and cameos in the series' fifth installment, Dead Men Tell No Tales. He is the captain of the Flying Dutchman (based on the ghost ship of the same name).
The computer-generated imagery used to complete Jones was named by Entertainment Weekly as the tenth favorite computer generated film character in film history, behind King Kong in 2007.[3] The work on Davy Jones by Industrial Light and Magic earned them the 2006 Academy Award for Visual Effects for Dead Man's Chest.
The character is based on the superstition of Davy Jones' Locker. In contrast to the historical legends, the film's Jones is a villain.

because she didnt come to him after the first 10 years
he loved her and so she gave him the task to look after the people who die at sea and every 10 years he can be one day on land with the woman he loved but after the first 10 years after he waited so long she didnt show up full of rage he helped the brethern court to inprison calypso but even then he was full of rage and sorrow which is why he is evil today. i dont know when he cut out his own heart either after she betrayed him or after he betrayed her

    And what did calypso answer
    "tis my nature"
    I finally understand davy jones
He got betrayed after all the hardwork he did
He wasted 10 years of his life for an empty promise
and then after some years later he began to prey on innocent ships
One of my favorite lines from him is
"life is cruel why should the afterlife be any different"
    The man only wanted love
    Instead he got heart broken
But still after so many years of hatred and pain his last words were
    "Calypso"
Even if she betrayed him, Jones still thinks of her until his very last breath

Alexander Larsson I know I’m a bit late. But this is truly a matter of perspective, as Davy Jones did his Job and for 10 years led the way for dead souls as per what Calypso said to him. But after 10 years when he looked for her, she wasn’t there. So since he was in a position of power, an Immortal captain who leads one of the strongest ships and the mightiest crew he did what he did and killed many. But we can’t necessarily hate on him as who knows what we would’ve done if we were in his position. Remember he worked 10 years in order to be reunited with her, thats dedication and shows how much he loved her but then she betrayed him just like that. Personally I think I also would’ve lost control, but it depends tho.

    • @alexanderlarsson425
      @alexanderlarsson425 Před 4 lety +7

parheps I see your point but it really wasn’t Calypso who betrayed him. It was the other way around, meaning Jones betrayed calypso by teaching the bretherin court how to capture her in a human body. Since calypso was the sea goddess before she got imprisoned she was basically the whole sea. Davy Jones loved the sea and he was therefore with her the entire duration of those ten years. When he got to go to shore she obviously wasn’t there since she was the embodiment of the sea. He spent ten year with her, and one day without her. This leads to him betraying her and imprisoning her. He is not the victim of any sort in my opinion

His character reminds me of the peril of falling for the idea of someone without actually knowing them as a person, when you think they’ve betrayed you because they weren’t what/how you thought they should be, the pain only doubles when you learn that there’s no one to blame but yourself.

Happened with my first love, second girlfriend. I didn't know what I wanted in a girl but when I fell for her I had this idea of who she was and I fell in love with that. I mean she was absolutely gorgeous, but I was in love with her intellect, values, and zeal. I was in love with her but it was almost this image of who he was and my pride in being with someone so amazing and vigorous. When we broke up I realized that I didn't know her as well as I thought I did and that I was so caught up in her stature and my idea of who she was that I ignored flaws and it hurt our relationship.

Yeah, it's hard to beat Jones as an original villain. I mean, the third and fourth films kinda relied on a real-life entity or person who's story seems a bit out of place for the films (but great nonetheless). They took the Honorable East India Company and turned them into a paramilitary force that nearly rivaled the Royal Navy just because of one man's grudge against all pirates. And Blackbeard? Not sure anyone else realizes this, but the real-life Edward Teach actually treated both his crew and captives with upmost respect and cared for their well-being, far different from the Blackbeard we see in the fourth film, who appears more like the legends and myths surrounding him than his real-life counterpart.
And though the 5th film doesn't seem to be held in high regards to the others (probably a bit due to both Disney and Johnny Depp), I say it has its own place in Pirates lore, simply because it created an entirely, completely original enemy in Capitan Armando Salazar, his crew, and their ship, the Silent Mary. The Silent Mary was not a real ship (but based off of an old French man of war), Salazar and his men were not based off of any form of nautical legend (as far as I know of), and overall it was a good film. The story and elements in it were very unique, something that we haven't seen in the series since the first film.
And am I the only one here who half-expected Disney to add in animatronics of Salazar and his men (not cursed) on the battlements of the fort in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride?

Davy Jones. Not a villain, but a victim. A victim of the most wretched, cruel, heartless killer of them all: love. He devoted himself to the duty his beloved charged him with. Ten years. Ten long, insufferable, agonizing years. And when he got his one and only day to see her, she was nowhere to be found. Whether she was careless or just too busy, it mattered not. What mattered was that she wasn't there. It was their first opportunity to be together after ten years and she couldn't make it. Their relationship mattered so much to Jones that he was willing to spend ten years in a strange world, caretaking the dead, but Calypso didn't even have the courtesy to see him after his torment was up. The promise of their reunion after a decade was likely the only reason he agreed to the task. And if he couldn't rely on her to be their for him for their only day together, why even bother continuing the task? So with hatred, pain, and spite in his heart, he abused his immortality. He turned to piracy and cruel trickery, offering dying sailors a respite from judgement in exchange for one hundred years of service to the Dutchman. A fair deal, surely? But no one ever made it to the end. They became part of the crew, part of the ship. They shared the curse of their Captain, the curse that turned him into a ghastly sea creature nightmare. He used his Kraken to slaughter all those who might oppose him, or those he simply didn't like. He delighted in causing people the same pain and vexation he had been forced to endure at the hands of Calypso. After all, as he said himself, "life is cruel. Why should the afterlife be any different?" He didn't matter to Calypso enough for her to make it on time to their meeting? Fine. Then Calypso didn't matter to him enough for him to finish his task. But always he thought of her. He kept the music box she gifted him, the one that played their tune. He often found himself playing it on his organ. He couldn't help but wonder, why wasn't she there? What had he done wrong? Why did he deserve to be neglected? Questions he would never get answers to, yet he pondered them frequently. For despite his insistence to the contrary, he had to admit to himself, at least, that a part of him still, and would always, desperately love the woman who had betrayed him, who had caused him so much pain. He loved her, but he hated her, a vicious conflict inside him. One side of him longing desperately for his companion again, and the other side simply incapable of forgiving her sin against him. Which side was more powerful? Did he love her more than he hated her? Or vice versa? Even he did not know the answer. Perhaps he loved and hated her in equal measure. But always was she on his mind, until the very, bloody, end.

They loved each other so much but once the ten years came and when he came back she wasn't there. In sadness, pain and heartbreak Davy cut out his own heart to try and stop the pain he was feeling. Only to still look after the souls that parished at sea and corrupt the purpose he held. He put his heart in a chest and buried it and left it on a random island and didn't dare to get it back. When writers can create such a complex, deep character and put all this story and emotion in the hands of a master like Hanz Zimmer to make his theme, we get this master piece that fits perfectly to davy jones

Davy Jones was a great villain and the after-credit scene in Dead Men Tell no tales honestly got my hopes up. Then came the 'PotC Reboot' crap and my hopes flew out the fucking window, through Wakanda and right into Davy Jones's Locker. No crabs to help ot out.

I know I’m late in the gang of analyzing Jones’ characteristics and stuff but one thing always had me thinking when I first watched the movies. Why was he filled with rage again right after seeing his tear? Is it even rage? I mean,, I often believed I put too much thought into it. I think when he remembers how much the betrayal hurt this is the moment the tear is floating down(obviously) but he only realizes that really when his tentacle reaches for the tear. He realizes that this pain which he never wanted to feel again is back. That this pain which made him rip his heart out is hurting him again. He’s not angry. He’s rather frustrated. And frustration can easily turn into rage. He’s just broken inside and wants to feel nothing regarding love, pain and whatever belongs to that. Yet he can’t get over Calypso. He can’t get over the pain through simply running away. That’s also taking part of his frustration. Davy Jones is such an amazing character and it shows. Every little detail put into him. I love villains in movies who are so well written because you can never stop finding new details that are hinting the personality and the cause in general.
(Btw this video is so amazing I’ve watched it so many times already omg)

    Fun Fact
The Music Box Davy Jones ownes, plays a series of notes of the song, while Calypso's Music Box is an exact twin which plays a different set of notes. And when played together at the same time plays the same love song with two perfect DIFFERENT melodies in sync of the one song, emphasizing the song.. Thats why when you see Calypso in the brig locked up listening to her music box, it sounds different to Davy Jones' when he walks in just as she closes hers..

Davy Jones' Locker was a real life euphemism for the eternal watery grave of those ships and souls who sank below the waves into the deep.
Davy Jones was a real Pirate, tho little is known of him and his exploits and how his name is connected to the euphemism is unknown, there's some loose theories
