Agreed, Tommy B is the Ned Flaunders of the world. He has to have is songs in the same way Ned needs "diddly"
Actually, from what Gandald says of Tom at the Council of Elrond, it implies that he has gone to other places in the world before, but in the Third Age he no longer does so, saying, "And now...":
“And now he is withdrawn into a little land, within bounds that he has set, though none can see them, waiting perhaps for a change of days, and he will not step beyond them.’”
Good point
An excellent point! And I agree. I like the idea of Tom having traveled the world for as long as it's existed, and simply likes to be where Goldberry is.
Reportedly after the Quest of the Ring and before the Grey Havens, Gandalf visited Tom in the old forest and spent some time with him. One wonders what they talked about. Perhaps the Valar gave Gandalf a secret mission as a condition for his return to Middle Earth (ie: a request for Tom and Goldberry to come to Valinor).
I wish that they would just not include him at all.
THANK YOU.
People literally are mad that this dude didn’t stay in the Old Forest for 50,000 years.
Close minded…smh
Someone once said how funny it would be if Tom Bombadil was played by Jack Black and now I can't get that out of my head.
I have been thinking about this for weeks...and I did not see anyone say that! 😅
I am afraid of what they'll do to Tom Bombadil

So, the same people who decided that Celebrimbor, the greatest craftsman of the First Age, was mystified by the concept of alloys, are tackling Tom Bombadil, the single most enigmatic character in Tolkien's universe? I wonder if Tom will know what wood is.
I can't wait for Tom Bombadil to put on his ninja gear and go assassinate Sauron but kill Celembribor instead, which Galadriel catches him do, then they together pin the blame on Sauron, and after hooking up for a night, Bombadil goes back to Goldberry who is actually at this point still a man, pre-transition.

In my opinion Tom doesn’t need to be in a series or movie. We all have our own imagination about him and thats just fine.
In my opinion none of the Tolkien-inspired media is necessary. :) I find it all quite bad, to be honest, including the Peter Jackson films that many fans seem to enjoy. I enjoy them in that they are "about" (or "around") the books, but they have all been a disappointment to grumpy old me.

You are right, The Lord of the Rings is a book published in 1954-55, and this is an adaptation. What's your point?
How they chose NOT to go with Brian Blessed for this role is beyond me...
"Old Tom Bombadill is a merry fellow: Bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow!"
Amazon writers: I know we will make him grim and dark, scrawny and angry. Give him a grey jacket to tease that he is what Gandalf will become and give him brown boots to show how much dirt he has walked through!

The amount of disrespect this show has is borderline funny.
Those who can't write their own poems or sing their own songs, will never grasp Tom Bombadil. Their greed and idolization of violence is thin and empty. Nothing but a shadow with a stolen name. We can ignore it and make merry with the real Tom enjoying a hearty meal of lyric and song while the fools drink from the empty cup of corporate shallowness
You can avoid all of this garbage by not watching it or acknowledging anything character or story wise that they attempt to force on you. There are only three Star Wars movies, only two Teminators, only three Indiana Jones movies, etc.
Tom Bombadil’s a character that’s very close to my heart for reasons not related to anything in the books or movies. A long time ago, back in the nineties, when my family and I went on vacation in Kona, Hawaii, there was a little pizzeria, just across the street from the condo we always stayed at, a Middle Earth-themed joint named Tom Bombadil’s. We used to go there, whenever we were in Kona, though it closed a long time ago (and the owner of it passed away not too long ago as well). So thinking about Tom always gets me nostalgic.
Not entirely relevant to the topic at hand…but a fun little bit. Anyone else ever been there?
I cant wait!!!!!!! Been binging any and all Tolkien content getting ready. Cant believe im just now discovering this channel. And thanks for sharing the stoke for the RoP. All the negativity hurts my heart and its refreshing seeing others share the love of this magnificent world.
Cool idea but I have reservations about execution for obvious reasons
Don't know what you're talking about. Season 1 felt just like Middle Earth. 100% lore accurate.
Tom Bombadil Plot Line will be a Happier singing version of Beorn in The Hobbit!

Seriously. I’m afraid they just want him to fill a role of a different character but give us the “fan service” of making him look like and be named Tom Bombadil
@bradleyc328 most likely that's the case. But I'm gona give the actor playing him a chance. I don't blame him, at least not yet 😅 and with all the money they spent on the show u think they'd brighten his colors a little 🤣🤣🤣

If they screw up Tom Bombadil, I will not be happy. He has such a happy feature, but also serious. The Ring doesn't affect him, yet he knows of its power and its affect on Frodo. It would be interesting to see if the Amazon series stays true to the lore about this beloved character. If they're bringing Tom in, they can't forget his beloved wife - the River Daughter. Lillies for my love, hey dillo dillo!
If... Lol
as this is over 5000 yrs before the books, he might not have even met Goldberry yet, who knows
It’s not if..
It’s WHEN they screw him up.
Zero chance they will respect the lore . Why start now ?
The fact that the actor doesn't/didn't know who he is playing is already a red flag tbh
What a roller coaster of emotions: (1) Excitement (because I love Tom), (2) Apprehension (as I remembered the choices the show-runners made in season one), (3) Hope (as I resolve to give them a chance and promise to reserve judgment), and the (4) Sorrow (the moment I hear Tom will somehow be in Rhûn). As enigma-y as he is, the one clear thing is that Tom belongs in Tom’s country. Darn.
Rings of Power is blasphemous nonsense and should be disregarded as trifles. Tom is the most powerful being in LOTR, he shouldn't be mashed through the DEI blender of an Amazon writers' room and shat out as some dull hued unoffensive yet somehow tragically misconstrued wood nymph who never understood his own sexuality and is now free to dance with the Harfoots in a new happy non-gendered world with no sharp edges and where true evil is a world where words hold more meaning than the mind of no-man. Tom is beyond this world because he is the fount of it. This show is a disgrace to a proud IP.
@@keyser021 whoa somehow you managed to mash all teh shittiest cultural discourse into one rant that slipped off the rails. The show sucks for lots of reasons but if you are conservative snowflake who is afraid of the world outside his bubble.. don't drag it into your art criticsm K?
"enigma-y" is my new favorite word. 😂
Apparently the men of Rohan and the dwarves have their own names for Tom. This suggests that Tom has met people from Rohan, which means he's probably been outside of his forest.
Yes damn, why Rhun? A desert does not fit to Tom, what another big disappointment!
Was eager to hear your take on this.
I still think my theory about Tom and goldberry is right. I think Tom is Father Time and Goldberry is Mother Nature.
lol nope. verifiably wrong.
They are beautiful beings not made for Middle Earth, but I reckon they play a small part keeping the creeping evil in the Barrow Downs and out of reach of the Shire.
Goldberry danced on a hilltop to send the anxious hobbits on their way to destroy the ring… inspiring and a small sense of deep longing to know them and their peace more
There isn't a "Father Time" or " Mother Nature" in Middle Earth. Closest things would be Eru and the Ainur.
Tolkien described Bombadil as “the spirit of the (vanishing) Oxford and Berkshire countryside.”
They nailed the casting for Tom Bombadil! Rory is going to steal every scene he’s in. He is an amazing talent AND he can sing. His character in Penny Dreadful was heartbreakingly beautiful.
a positive comment is nice to see but your hopes are based purely on the actor, which was not the problem with season 1. The actors weren't that bad, it was the writing which was awful from the plot to the lines themselves. The best actors in the world would look like dogdoo in the Rings of Power so long as the clowns that did Season 1 are at the helm.
Good actor, but surely they will definitely ruin the character. As they have done with all the rest.

A corporation such as Amazon could never understand the whimsical and pure nature of Tom

Best version of Tom I saw in video was him dancing to the safety dance that turns brings together Elves, Men, Orcs, and even Sauron.
Tom Bombadil was in the Battle for Middle Earth, he was a special power to use. He was awesome.
As long as Tom and Goldberry aren't Morgoth and Ungoliant, my expectations are fulfiled and surpased.
That is a sadly low bar to clear, and I'm not opposed to it.
Sadly, I feel they'll still ruin them.
I feel the same…. Very low bar
The bar is on the floor
Galadriel would have to have the hots for him first.

I still think Tom Bombadil is Eru Iluvatar pulling an Alanis Morissett in Dogma.
Tolkien said that He Was Not Eru!! Although I always wished that as well!! I heard Someone theorize Tom as Father Time and Goldberry Mother Earth!! Which could work!! Even just a Song, Poem or Thought of Eru's in tge beginning which also works!! To Bad The Buffoon's at Amazon are definitely gonna make him Morgoth!!
Tom is the music.
Yes! Your poem at the end of the video was awesome haha! I do find it unfortunate that they didn't think to add a photo of Tom smiling or just being jolly in some way... makes me nervous about seeing him in the show.
I wish Rings of Power would leave Tom Bombadil alone.
I should like for it to include some sort of knowledge about Tree Beard who is also eldest of the Ents. Also hope we find out more about his wife Goldberry. The woods don't look v lush, more mediterranean the plants etc. Always imagined the barrowrights being in a bronze age burial area. I would like to see his costume brighter, as if it were of the sky and sun as Goldberry is rushes and of the water ... difficult to capture that!
Tom Bombadil... the being whose as old as the world, who Tolkien purposely wrote as an enigma, the being so whimsical yet completely well meaning that he could wear the One Ring without being corrupted by it (or being pushed into the spirit world), that the council briefly considered just giving HIM the One Ring as its jailer, but he WAS so disconnected from earthly desires that they worried he'd let it slip past him.
Honestly really wish they’d left this as a surprise
Since Tom is a neutral character I would love to see adar run Into him in the Forrest and Tom takes him into his home gives him food and water. I think a convo between Tom and a character like adar would be interesting. Like what advice or what subjects would they talk about

It sure looks like Tom Bombadil's blue robe and hat looks like something that a blue wizard would where. Tom lent Blue some clothes?? Also in the last shot he's wearing just a smock..This would confirm the Stranger is a Blue Wizard.
My thoughts are that I am going to do my best to watch this season with out any expectation of loyalty to the source material. I don't think they will completely ignore it, but it seems clear that they want to share a unique retelling of these events as inspired by, and not informed by. It will likely be fun to see ol' Tom Bombadilo no matter what, as long as he isn't Morgoth living with Ungoliant serving some penance on Arda 😅

I never would have expect Tom Bombadil to actually make any apperances in any adaptions, ever. I'd sooner have expected Monthy Pythons Spanish Inquisition to show up!
That said, given Rory Kinnear is the son of the late character and comic actor Roy Kinnear, that's actually pretty inspired casting. If anyone probably could have played the character it was probably his dad, though granted, maybe a fair bit over the top, Roy would have been near the top of my list, had I ever thought anyone would actually put him into any show.

I tried to be very open minded when I watched Ring of Power season one so that I can say at least I watched it before I trash talk it and I actually did finish the season. I don't think I'd continue with season two even tho Tom will be there to be honest.
The beauty of Tolkien has always been that the more you read: the more questions you have. This is why we're still here today discussing Tolkien and the meaning of ....
It's something Peter Jackson's trilogy knew to follow - for years every time I watched it, I would have new questions. "What's up with the Reunited Kingdom. Why isn't he just king of Gondor. And why isn't he king already" etc etc. And I could go into the books and theories and read and read and read.
Unfortunately Rings of Power does not follow this unspoken rule. Some things are better left a mystery. Let the people wonder. Let them ask question. Let them read the books!
YAASSSS to Morgoth Bombadil! I can't wait to watch this train wreck of a season. It's like when a 5 year old got handed the keys to his dad's mercedes. That's the writing of this show.

Tom Bombadil is always jovial and happy yet casually serious at times. I hope Rory Kinnear can bring the character to life albeit outside the stories already written about him.
I’ve always pictured Tom Baker (when he was younger) in that role.
No way I can’t believe it… (both Tom bom and me actually being here first??) 😂
To be honest, if he was wearing a bright blue coat and yellow boots I would think it would look campy in live action 🤷🏻♀️ I’m one that has never needed someone’s outfit to be 100% adapted. I want it to make sense and fit with the show
True
Bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow, AND he never changed his outfit once even in a thousand years. (apparently)
i generally agree with this except for when there's a big deal about the outfit or if it's mentioned more than just once
The enigmatic characters in Arda interest me the most; those that don't have some well documented lineage from Eru Ilúvatar's creation with assistance from the Valar; or the fell creatures created by Melkor. They would include Bombadil and the nature spirits like Goldberry; Ungoliant; the Watcher in the Water; etc.
