50-year plumber here, and I completely agree!! Spend a little more money and replace the thimg with one equipped with a vacuum breaker, which will allow the water to fully drain from the sillcock when turned off AND will satisfy the plumbing code
Thank GOD you did this video! We have a leaky outdoor faucet and no money to call a plumber. What a relief to see this repair so clearly demonstrated.
Happy to help!

Careful. Just sayin
I second this! If the plumber had to come for THIS?! Thank you for the ease and confidence with which you presented this video. A lifesaver!
Temperatures dropping to the teens tonight, I scrambled to fix leaking faucet and then found your video with the exact same faucet. Followed every step of your instructions, including your parts recommendations, and repair went perfectly and faucet no longer leaks. Finished a few hours ago just as it started snowing. Thank you!
Thank you for this video. I took my spigot apart and was shocked to find a long shaft. Your video helped me ensure that I was not crazy. Got the washer replaced and all good. $1.97 versus hiring a plumber.
Just watched and repaired a 50 year old spigot. Again. Next leak, I'm replacing the whole unit. Many thanks!
Your video saved me a lot of stress and money! I was ripped off by a plumber who "fixed" my leaking hose bib for $150 less than a year ago. He warned me that his repair might not hold, and a permanent fix would be several thousand dollars. When I took it apart, the washer looked like yours... I think he used the wrong size for this unnecessarily expensive repair. Your recommendation for $10 of washers and careful instructions were perfect. Repaired it myself and I'm confident I can do it again if I have to. THANK YOU!!
Awesome, happy the video helped 🙌.
I charge 350$ to replace an exterior faucet
I was charged like $575 for a plumber to replace a hose bib nearly 10 years ago.
What a crook. Just like every plumber
This video is incredibly helpful. I feel inept when it comes to home maintenance, especially anything to do with plumbing, but after watching this, I think I can actually fix our outdoor faucet now. So, thank you very much for your instruction.
I feel the same!!
Same. Thanks a lot
And? How much did the plumber cost you?😅
@alan4sure I tried to fix the bathtub faucet leak and it was difficult to get off. I damaged the part that went into the wall. I called plumber and he told me because I did that, he had to replace the copper inside the wall on top of the tub parts. He was there 2 hrs and it cost me $1100 for something that should have been at most $75 for new faucet parts. Now I'm afraid to do anything related to plumbing.
@@dougbax641 yep I can imagine that happening for sure!
Why did 819 people downvote this? What would be the problem?
Although my stem wasn't precisely the design; this solution worked!
I did exactly what you instructed and it fixed my outdoor faucet! Thank you so much for the easy step by step instructions. I fixed my leak in 30 minutes. Your awesome!
Great video. Although I found my insert to be threaded, I found the flattened washer and replaced it with one found in the "contractor pack" I paid 10 bucks for at the hardware store. I decided to try it because a plumber told me the week before that, "We don't repair, we replace." He quoted me $658!! Good savings of $648! Thanks!
Some faucets are antique style and cannot be 'replaced' easily or at all.
Like those on the old claw foot tubs for example.
Older sinks sometimes do not have the 6" spacing for lavatory sinks' new style faucets.
So, get out the seat grinder, washer and SCREW kit, valve packing, and plumber's grease.
Thank you. I've done plumbing on homes mine. Others that I've rented and everything else for years. And I've never done a freezing states. I've never dealt with these. No one at any story and answer. Even the plumbers were just trying to get business for me. Hang your ferme back to my old things and I appreciate it. We solved it
Wow. Thank you. I have a 40 year old out door spigot. 79 cent rubber washer fixed my leak. I almost paid a plumber 200 bucks to replace it.
Amen! I did pay 100.00 for a washer on one, and vowed not again.
6th grade shop teacher would be proud!
Thanks for the excellent video. I was able to replace the washer and fix the leak with no problems. It was much easier and cheaper than replacing the entire faucet and no plumber was required!
I searched hrs on dripping spigot and NONE MENTIONED this !!! 💯
Thank you for this video
Thanks for this clear video. I detached my hose from my exterior faucet today and noticed that the it was really dripping quite a bit. With colder temps on the way I couldn't leave it like that. I had repaid an interior faucet on a utility sink just a few days ago, but watched your video as I have a similar setup with a frost-free faucet. The only issue I had is that the bib washers I had on hand were 1/4-in M size, and I needed 1/4-in S size. I went to my local hardware store and picked up what was the last package and completed the repair. Thanks again!
paid 100 bucks for the plumber to change it out a washer in one, and it was so easy to fix, decided if it happens to another one will fix myself thanks to you! Thank you so much!!!!!!! A+++++
Thanks for the feedback.
Being an old school farm boy, I use 1/8" fuel line (or whatever size fits) as the sealing washer...
Just cut off to length...
Lasts longer than the plain washers...
YOU ARE A PERFECT INSTRUCTOR.
Well done sir. Took me no time to fix mine. Very thankful on a Friday evening before freezing weather coming in
Great video saved me a ton of money not having to call a plumber - Thank you so much
That is what we are here for 🙌
Also my girlfriend kept saying maybe we should get a plumber. I said no, we do not need a plumber most projects you don't
I am so glad you uploaded this Video, because I found a dripping leak on my Outdoor faucet. Thank you so much!
This video came in clutch to fix our leaky spigot. Assorted faucet washer pack at Ace for $6 and 15 min later no more leaky spigot. Thanks!
Thank you for showing actual rusty old faucet. Almost all videos shows new faucet.
This is the real deal from 1997. Still holding strong.
Since I did my addition in 2001, I have had a leak in the outdoor faucet the whiz kid plumber installed. I kept putting off getting it fixed, because I thought a plumber would need to come out and replace the entire unit. I guess that might still happen, but a 20 cent washer sounds like a much better deal. Thanks for the video.
Had a plumber tell me one time after he replace the faucet in my bath tub, the best way to make the faucet last longer is to act like a little old lady with arthritis in my hands and only turn it till it stops dripping. Great advice.
@Mark rapacki that is correct.
Don't ever buy a delta. There are too many internal parts that if you over tourqe that handle it will drip. Stick with moen
@@endlessdesert3122 Moen Schmoen. Delta faucets have stops that prevent over torque. Moen might too, but I'll take a Delta over a Moanin' any day.
Actually, stop turning BEFORE it stops dripping. It's water, not electricity. It will not stop flowing instantaneously. It also isn't air/gas, which needs a tighter seal to stop the flow. Turn it off, watch the drip. If it needs a little more tweaking to stop the last drips, give it a LITTLE more.
Sounds like the plumber simply didn't want the small job.
I am so thankful for your video. It was so easy to fix even in 20f weather. You saved me a ton of money.
I was getting ready to replace the entire outdoor spigot. This is all it was. Thanks for the content.
That would really suck! I don't think you know how really insane that would have been.
Terrific video! Followed your instructions and stopped my leaking spigot. BTW - Before fixing this using your video, I called a plumber to review the situation, and he provided a ridiculous and expensive “solution” that I quickly rejected. Lesson learned - Check how-to videos first before calling a contractor. Doing so would have saved me some time and money.
You have saved me several headaches, helped me alleviate some headaches and allowed me to save some money and time. Thanks
Thank you. I was getting anxiety about the dripping, now I can fix it myself.
I'm in the South, so I had never seen an antifreeze faucet. Cool stuff. Great video.
Thanks!
Remember when Texas got hit with those sub-freezing temps a couple years back--all those frozen pipes made it a real BLEEP show. It's always better to be loaded for bear.
@@AStanton1966 Great point!
I live in an Atlanta suburb and still have freeze proof outdoor faucets. Also have indoor hose bibs (shutoff valves) to each outdoor faucet and I shut those off when a freeze is forecasted.
@T Raybern No thanks for yours.
I just fixed my outdoor faucet yesterday and everything went just as you showed! Your instructions were easy to follow and I was fortunate to have the exact same kind of faucet you demonstrated with. I just saved a ton of money! THANK YOU!
You will be rich in no time.😄
I do this repair for $50..as a handyman. Don't think that is a "ton" of money!
😄
Great advice for everyone. My disaster was when I moved to Misssouri from Michigan. One of my faucets was NOT outdoor frostproof. One year when I did not drain it, it froze and burst a pipe inside the basement. That spring when I pressure washed the house, I flooded the basement! Cost me my basement bedroom, carpet, drywall and a bathroom. The insurance company paid to demolish, air dry and clean some of the basement- no repairs! A month later after receiving a small check, we pulled the carpet in the next room and we discovered mold under the carpet. The insurance people suggested we should dry it and re-lay it! No way we did that! So we pulled all carpet, washed and dried the concrete. We then laid tile throughout the basement.
So in summary, drain non frost-free lines before they freeze. If possible replace them with frost-free, ASAP. Don’t expect the insurance company to cover pipes freezing. After all , it’s an act of nature.
Oh man, that is rough. I appreciate you sharing the story to help other homeowners avoid a similar nightmare.
So are hurricanes. I’m covered. Are freezing pipes the homeowners fault for not winterizing? What if they don’t know….CZcams.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs I am selling my house in Texas if you want to resell and make at least 30k profit
should have stayed in Michigan! lol Thee best state there is!!
Thank you very much for sharing.😊
Fantastic! Your step by step really helped me understand the mechanics of what I am looking at. I feel comfortable now giving it a shot and trying the washer swap myself. Thank you!
Hello. Did you attempt to fix yet?
@@ledzepp817 not yet. It's still dipping below freezing temps here so I am still in winterization mode. I expect to fix in the next 45 - 60 days...
EXCELLENT, CLEAR instructions! Wow..wish I had known this when we bought our house decades ago. As a result, I have one outdoor spigot we don't use. Someday will have to spend the $$$ to fix it 🥺
Why not change the whole spiget while your there buy a nine and twelve inch you get new seals and washers ,now you can turn the water off only once ,when your finished return the other spiget .
Don't forget to take the other spiget back .....
Gotta say… short sweet and accurate. Very good confident presentation!! Well done and helpful
Incredibly clear information! Thank you.
Saved me some repairing cost! Many thanks Sir. ❤️
Thank you so much for this video. It gave me the confidence I needed to fix my leaky outside faucet. A $0.86 washer did the trick. You explain what you're doing very well. Again, thank you for saving me from calling a plumber.
Thank you! Fixed my leak in 20 minutes.
Thank you thank you thank you. I had two of them and they charged me 500 mucks to replace one including brick repair. I didn't have him do the other one and thank god because this video let me do it myself.
Nice brother. Thanks for the clear and concise info. Will see if it fixes my leaking tomorrow!
Thanks for posting this clip. I got my faucet fixed.
Marvelously explained. One can now deal with all circumstantial exigencies.
This helped me out of a stressful situation! Thank you sir!
One of the first things I did after moving into our new (to us) home above the Mason Dixon line was to replace the two outdoor faucets with frost-proof or freeze-proof faucets.
Very helpful. Clear explanation and demo. Thanks a lot.
You bet!
Thanks for this video. I was able to get mine to stop dripping by watching this video and I bought the wrong size washer. So I flipped the washer that was in it and it stopped the leak!!! HAHAHA. so I have a temporary fix for it. Thanks again.
You bet!
Excellent information. Thanks for posting.
Thank you so much for teaching all techniques how to fix it 👏👏👏❤
wow!!! makes alot of sense just remove the rubber gasket and replace it rather than replacing the entire faucet components i didnt know that untill now,its such a simple fix. thank you i have been doing it wrong.
This is a GREAT video....your clear instructions made this a very easy project!
This is a professionally presented video. Very informative. Well done.
Make sure to faucet is fully open when reinserting.
??
Outstanding helpful video. Thanks for sharing!
Brass cap and washer for $2.50. Quick fix! 👍
The building code prohibit all pipe installation that would be inside an exterior wall because of freezing in cold area (like Canada and northern US). That is also why you need that long frost free faucet because it needs to reach the pipe inside the house, on the "warm" side. The rubber is also inside to stop water before it goes throu the wall. Hope this comment help you understand the purpose.
worth a reminder that before tightening the bonnet, to make sure the faucet is slightly open. Otherwise the force of a wrench could crush the new washer, or maybe even crack the valve threads.
Thank you very much. This is extremely helpful. I have fixed both of my outdoor faucet using the exact same procedures.
Really good job! It’s easy to say just replace the entire faucet BUT if the no freeze is hard soldered in then it’s not that easy cause you have to know how to cut copper and solder the new one in!
If it screws in under the house, no problem!
Thanks!
That was awesome! Thank you I took it apart by myself and then saw the crushed washer and was like "wtf is this rubber part... where am I going to get one that looks exactly like this.. ha ha this explained I was just looking at a very old crushed regular washer.
Happy to help!
Just fixed my outdoor faucet by replacing the washer as shown. Thank you so much for taking the time to create this video. Clear instructions took away the hesitation of me tackling this job. It only took me about 15 minutes to do it with no problems.
Thanks for the great tips. Good job!
Excellent! Thanks for sharing!
I can't believe how easy this was to fix..I followed your instructions and now there is not a leak in sight...I feel like a jackass for not fixing it sooner..you will save me a lot on my water bill
This video really helped me out. Thank you for posting it.
Thank you! Great video. Clear and concise.
Great information! I live on the south and I'm going to have to change my valve. The valves are so cheap, I'll change it entirely.
Best of luck with the project 👍
Thanks!! I'm going to try that on mine.
Much help! Thanks for making this!
Very helpful, got mine fixed thanks to the info you posted here. 👍👍
Happy to help 🙌 On to the next project 😂
As usual, another great video. Now I know to fix a valve without replacing the whole faucet.
Thanks for the video! It helped me w/ my dripping faucet!
Thanks for the video I’ve got 2 older ones that both leak, one a little more than the other so I’m going to give this a try
I sure do appreciate y’all!!!
I learned from observing the condition of the flat washers when replacing them that over-tightening them actually causes the rubber to buckle or wrinkle and tear, causing leakage.
So tighten only enough to stop the water, and give it time to drain out before you continue cranking it tighter. It's natural to think you haven't tightened it enough because we're so afraid of it leaking.
Thank you for the very helpful video! Definitely saved me time and money!
Very well done. Thanks for doing it.
Good one. Thank you for sharing
Much thanks for the video. I have two outside spickets that needed replacement washers . Your video was a tremendous help.
Thanks for the feedback 🙌
Doin' this today on the job
Good job man!
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Best video I have ever seen, very helpful
Thatnx man, it's on my bucket list! I had no idea that was made like this. Great help
You were a life saver today. The instructions were great and to the point. Thank you sooo much.

Great video! Thanks for sharing.
Excellent video, thank you for sharing.
This was a wonderful video. Simple, good images, and clear explanations. I know that I'll be able to tackle this myself. Thank you!!👍
Excellent. Thank you friend.
Good video. Thanks my outdoor is leaking.
Nice. I have the short faucets. Thanks for the help. REALLY appreciate this.
Nicely done. Thanks for the video. 😊
Awesome, thank you !
Great explanation. I did not know they had that long stem for freeze prevention design. I have the anti-siphon type in Illinois.
Thanks. I changed my leaky spigot. The hardest part was finding a replacement gasket (Westlake Ace Hardware hooked me up).
Excellent video!!
Here's a tip. When checking the gasket at the end of the shaft, if it's not split or badly damaged but just compressed, simply turn it over and reinstall it. The underside is like new and will save you going to the hardware store for a new gasket. I just did this yesterday and it worked perfectly. Remember not to crank the faucet all the way down tight when shutting off. This will wear out the gasket prematurely. Only shut it off enough to stop the flow of water. Gasket will last much longer.
Fabulous video! Thank you!
Thanks very much for this great video! You helped me figure out my faucet and how to get into the washer.
I learned a lot and appreciate this very detailed information! ❤️👍😊 Jalyne in Utah
