  • U.S. nuclear-powered SUPERCARRIER steams FULL SPEED into the PACIFIC to conduct FLIGHT OPERATIONS!
This video includes HD footage of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) leaving port on a deployment to the Pacific; the footage also of course includes vision of the Roosevelt conducting both night and day flight deck operations.
(And how fast can a Nimitz-class carrier really travel? Officially: 30+ knots (56+ km/h; 35+ mph). Unofficially: closer to 38 knots.)

They will do more than 38 knots, the power is so strong it will twist the prop shafts into a pretzel. Those shafts are what limits top speed. Conventional carriers were able to hit 35 knots and the nukes are much more powerful.

There is good reason why none of them can max out to the BIG E speed.
The other reason the escort can't maintain that speed. Example Spurance/Ticonderoga all ahead full 33 knots.
Of the naval vessels when I was in the Navy the Kawishiwi was the only one of 2 vessels I knew of that could match that 38 knot speed.
It was an oiler. The other as the Pegasus.
The hull can't take it and repairing cracks is expensive and time consuming.
The Ranger was 50 when retired and The Enterprise was retired also in 2017 after 50 years.
Besides that I hated being in the ship yard.

WOW! We are certainly proud of that supercarrier as well as all the personnel who serve on her! We salute and thank all of you for your service to our Country. That's one mighty ship, a whole city within her! We understand that destroyers, supply ships, nuclear submarines, missile cruisers etc. are with the carrier to protect her, the carrier battle groups have a missile defense net that have many ways to destroy incoming missiles. As far as enemy subs go the carrier battle groups have anti-sub planes, helicopters, etc. and would be alerted to the enemy subs presence long before it was in range for it's torpedoes and would be quickly dealt with, so it's good to know that she's very safe out there! (Thank you for posting and allowing us to see her at sea!)
