- Today we are showing the steps and gear required to make your own chum for fishing. Chum is helpful when targeting fish such as yellowtail snapper, mangrove snapper, mahi mahi, kingfish, and many more. Using chum is especially helpful when Yellowtail snapper fishing in the Florida Keys or South Florida. By making your own chum, you can create higher quality chum and save a lot of money. Below are links to gear that we use as well as some of our Yellowtail Snapper and Mangrove Snapper fishing videos to see how we use chum to fish for them.

I thank you for this video. I watched it last night and caught a sale on the grinder for 69.99. I can't wait to use it.
Leaf grinder is a great idea!
Thanks!
may want to have a fan handy to keep those flies (especially if they bite) away.
I tried to make chum using a hand-grinder, from fresh water Gizzard and Thread-fin Shad, even added Menhaden oil.
.
Very surprised while anchored off rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, south of Freeport, Texas, and that Freshwater chum did nothing but scare away the other bait fish. I guess, even with chum, it helps to "match the hatch".
I had put the chum in Seal-0-meal bags, and one hot summer I forgot about leaving a bag, in a cooler, in the v-berth/cuddy cabin of my boat. I store my boat in at a facility with individual metal stalls and a secure door- and it gets very HOT 120deg in the summer. It was a cheaper Coleman cooler with a blue lid, and white base. When I returned the next weekend, I really appreciated that cooler, as that strong Seal-0-meal bag of chum, exploded from the gas build-up, and instead of covering the inside cuddy with fish parts, it was all contained in that Coleman cooler, smelled like sewage :(. I have several Yeti coolers, but I still use that coleman on short trips.
Yeah its funny how the chum doesn't always help. I've tried it for redfish in the river without much success but in Florida offshore it generally helps us.
Glad you had the chum in the cooler. That would have been quite a mess to try to clean in the cuddy!
How many parts oats to fish?
I have learned after you grind you meat grind one or two loaves of bread thru grind . Helps cleans the blades off . Then clean with water.
Thanks Steve, I’ll give that a try!
Will a weed eater work? Lol
That leaf grinder worked awesome 👍🏽
Does hosing the grinder take care of the odor it must produce? My manager would forbid it if it stunk too bad!
I bought the green grinder you are using but have not used it for chum grinding yet. I would like to know how you are cleaning the grinder? Do you just spray the whole blade assembly with water or are you disassembling the metal piece and only wiping under it? Can you spray water on the blade part without destroying the machine? If you leave ground fish on those metal parts they are going to stink bad and rust like crazy!
I have that same question!!!
I bought the grinder and want to try it out. I also have the same question on how to clean it? @DavidF @chasingdreamslivinglife
Ingredientes?
Ok funny...
Seems like everyone is doing a chum video....lol
I just did one last month.
Hope you catch some big ones.
Ed.
Thanks, I'll check out the video. Anything you like to do different with your chum?
@@ReelHazardous nothing so much different but this i mostly use when catching bait.
I make another kind by grinding fish scraps up and infuse manhadden oil. Then i have plastic shoe boxes that i put that into and freeze them. And that goes into my chum bag for reef fishing.
Pass the oat thru machine also. Just Saying 🎣🐟😎🕶🏆
Yeah that's a good point!
U can also use a commercial grinder for a butcher. They last n don't break but are 300 or so but they don't quite. Be careful what fish u grind cuz bloody fish bring alot of sharks. Sand Oats grinded fish corps n the cheapest dog food u can find has been working for me for years. Go to ur closest animal feed store
Thanks for the tips! I'll have to try the dog food. I bet that soaks up the oils good!
@@ReelHazardous yes guys but at the feed stores ask for oat for animals n see if they have gold fish regular food not the diet one. Get a bucket n put half full of cheap dog food n fill it till the top with water in 6 hours
The d food will bet powder cuz it sucks up all the water
Then it's thin sand n dog food n 1 chum block get ur cartises n when u fry anything put it in there
