Girl - after 2000 miles I had no idea you were battling any physical issues (other than when you fell & hurt your knee). I’m glad it brought you the focus and priorities you need to be happy in life. You risk a lot being this vulnerable and open with an internet audience, but I applaud your courage and hope your message will resonate with others!

The most life-changing activity for me was ballroom dancing. That took more bravery than when I had flown through hurricanes, because I feared social situations, especially with women, and especially dancing. That was a breakthrough.

Thank you so much for this video. I am older than you but have sufferred from chronic pain, anxiety and fatigue mostly this is from the stress of my job. I am a teacher and realize that this stresses me out too much that it is affecting me physically. Ten years ago I hiked in Spain. I'd never been a hiker but I loved it. What I loved was being able to get up, eat something, hike, find a place to eat, use the bathroom, sleep and shower and that was it. Along the way I met amazing people for all over the world including Spain. I was responsible for no one but myself and that gave me peace. I have struggled with physical illnesses and what you say about this is a good thing. I have always loved to be in nature and to be moving. It makes me happy. I am hoping to go back and finish what I started ten years ago. Until then I have the dunes in Indiana and Michigan to hike. Thank you so much, what you said was what I have been feeling and so I know that I am not the only one.

Very nice video, I understand what you meant by it is personal, it is because nature is showing you your honest side and you are yourself without a mask. I did not thru hike but I love hiking in nature every single day, as a mom who had a burnout and avoiding it to happen it is my medicine, especially alone time in nature is important, I love mountains and hiked 4 times the tallest mountain where I live, was not on the top but close to it, I was 800 metres or more above sea level, When I first iked it it was so emotional ( it is always but the first time is first time you know what I mean) , I was so proud of myself it is the farest from my home I hiked and the height of course, I was afraid doing it for so long, it changed my perspective on who I was before I hiked it. I did it at a time life got a bit crazy. My first step was I got rid of my smarphone, I felt better and happier, it allowed me to hike more, my grandpa was going to die soon (first close family member death), I lost my period for 2 months (do not know it was because I felt the loss coming or because my previous period I was exercising belly exercises and overdid it, could be both). When I hiked the mountain it was so powerful. When I was going down I felt the shift in me because new thoughts appeared and I started to be so positive, like everything we believe we can achieve, I recognized toxic beliefs I believed for so long which lot of them were not even mine but from other people and I considered them as my own, it cleared my mind so much, I became self aware and from that day I recognize what makes me feel good and what not and I became more honest. With each step going down I felt more alive, I knewI I was going home like a new person. I felt like a newborn and it made me aware what are the most important things in life, and they are so simple. I became braver, honest, and I do things I truly value. The more you hike the more you become aware of it. I had trouble sleeping for many years, I had interrupted sleep and 3 days after that hike my period returned and I started to have uninterrupted sleep. So from the day I hiked the mountain I realized, nature makes me so present, happy, it is so needed for my well being, and I need to hike everyday in nature. I go to the mountain whenever I feel life is going crazy and it rewards me with the great feeling of accomplishment and that life is unpredictable, but nature helps to cope with that. :)

Great vid HD, very well done and very true on multiple levels. The trail does truely change you, it changed me. I did my hike after 34 years of Gov service and I needed something to clear my head, soul and rebuild my faith in society writ large ...... I found it on the trail - incredible experience. But like yourself I am forever changed. During and since my hike I've been offered positions as a contractor "consulting" on various things ..... but I don't ever see myself working in an office or wearing a suit again (in a business setting). I really believe that's all behind me. As for today, I hike, bike, camp, kayak - wash , rinse, repeat ...... and my wife allows me to enjoy my hobbies in retirement.....which is a plus. Again, thanks for sharing - and of course, best of luck on your future adventures!! By the way, Heather Anderson just curshed the PA fasted known time record (male and female) ...... although Heather is a beast on the trail - so are you!!! Keep the faith and keep on hammering!!!!

A lot of people on the trail are facing these sorts of personal challenges.
I've been to a lot of those deaths where someone died alone. I think that a lot of those people underestimate how many people they are linked to and who would be adversely impacted by their passing. It's a very selfish thing, to take that way out.

You are right in that a person can experience feelings of sadness when they get older, because they dont have as many years ahead as they have behind them. I'm 57 yrs old and feel sadness sometimes. Regardless of age, however, we are each in charge of our happiness. I have found that even a small change in my daily life can bring a flicker of hope and happiness. Your channel helps with that. The trail provided you with a look at your inner strength and your ability to deal with the physical stress and strain of a long hike. Yes , it doesn't fix everything. but it helps with guidance. If you can, plan a hike in the 100 mile wilderness to Mama K. Most thru hikers are in a hurry at that point in the trail. I think you will find solitude and immense beauty in that 100 mile walk. The memories of the trail and friends along with seeing many things you may have missed will do wonders for your sole. Surround yourself with like minded people that you can teach and learn from, share experiences and look at the sunrise with hope. That's a good way forward. Thanks for sharing a most intimate side of yourself. Hike on...

First, just WOW….thank you for sharing something so vulnerable and yet so important. It will sound extreme but I think more people than we dare think are unsatisfied with a life that always feels painful whether it be body or soul that is in pain. Going outside of what we know in life isn’t easy, even if the norm is painful….we just don’t know how to take that “first step”. I can tell you at 65 that it is a life long struggle, finding happiness, but good on you for taking that step. The AT can be a pilgrimage of self realization and with a fair amount of determination and a bit of luck I’ll be stepping out towards Maine in ‘24.

Very inspirational video. I'm happy to be a subscriber. I live north of the Great Lakes surrounded by bush and I like to spend most of my time in the woods alone for the silence and the wildlife. Although the principle interest in my area is in canoe tripping I prefer to watch thru hikers even though my bush activity involves the canoe and staying in the woods for long periods. I have always had a very reclusive personality but I have many in town friends and consider myself very happy. I use my bush time for writing and reading. I like to say when I am in the woods it doesn't really matter to me what century it is because when I am in the trees all I have with me is my copy of Emily Dickinson's complete poems and it might as well be 1862 rather than 2023. Best wishes to you.

Brave girl for sharing your feelings. Sometimes we need to hit bottom before we can ( hopefully) bounce back.
I suspect everyone at some point has had all those questions of life pop into their head. Why am I here? What is my purpose? If I was never here, would it have made any difference? Will anyone ever remember I was even here? (Etc.)
This usually happens as we get older, and we have watched the dreams and plans of our youth drastically change or fall by the wayside. We also become jaded, as the naivety of our younger and less experienced self slowly evaporates.
We want it to all have meant something, and to be able to see something tangible and lasting. (I’ve always been jealous of movie stars and song writers because of this, because in a sense, they will live forever. 🤔)
Upon reflection, we also realize how short our time really is here, and anxiety begins to creep in.
Sometimes a long break, like the trail provides, can give you the time you need for some deep introspection, allowing you hopefully to come to terms with at least some of all that.
I am very happy knowing that you are now in a better place because of it. 👍
Just keep putting one foot in front of the other, and you’ll eventually reach your destination. 😉

Thanks for that story. I'm in that rut and need to get out. I'm traveling to Oklahoma to visit a pilot best friend of mine who we flew together in Iraq. Veterans

Sorry to hear about your regrettable ideation (that's my euphemism for it). You're way too good for that, and the world is a better place for it that you've come through your struggle. Keep on road-running, Roadrunner.

Juliane I’m reaching out and giving you a huge hug. Your such a beautiful, talented, smart woman. There is dark and light in this world. I wrote this poem while hiking in the Adirondacks.
I walk from dark to light and
    feel the cold misty morning.
Things once hidden I now can see, as I walk from dark to light.
I leave my past behind, a new day will dawn,
As I walk from dark to light.
(John 1:5) And the light shines in the darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

Everyone that hikes gets to think about whatever is going on (or wrong) in their lives, almost stuck in a loop, and there it was, what I need to do. That is to focus my life on Physical, Financial, & Intellectual goals, they all payoff. Life is better when you are physically fit. Life is better when you are financially secure. Life is better when you have skills and capabilities to deal with life's problems. Focus on Physical, Financial, & Intellectual goals your entire life, never stop, they keep paying off.

Sorry you have those emotional issues, I understand... I have always disliked the city... Going into the mountains or other wilderness places and to the beach is what calms my spirit... and every time I go back to the city to work, I immediately become depressed and filled with despair... It's been this way my entire adult life.

I think being inside and closed in all the time is no fun, we are meant to be outside fun in the sun . I think you need to dream more, see how bold you dream, because you never know, those dreams can come true. Be bold, take life by the horns, try new things, theres a whole world of adventures to embark on. Seek some out, theres really cheap places to go to...many more river crossing, lake crossing, mountain crossing etc...huggs ❤

Congratulations! You now have the gift of giving back. This channel is about giving your knowledge, experiences and motivation to others. As a teacher you used it to teach. On the trail, you experienced it. The hardest thing is to apply what you learned on the trail to the rest of your life. For me, it was a sense of place, fulfillment and accomplishment. I learned how to manage my own expectations as well as those around me. Thanks for sharing. Stay smart and safe!

@@hikingdancer Sorry for not replying sooner-I thought I did, but obviously I didn’t. Project Semicolon started out as a support movement for those suffering anxiety and depression (and the dark places that can come from those conditions) by drawing a semicolon on the wrist to represent a pause, rather than an end, in your life.
Having my own struggles with anxiety, I can appreciate yours and others more than before. I plan to get mine tattooed, but for now it is drawn on the back of my hand next to my watch as a reminder.
You’ve got this! If you ever feel the urge to put a period at the end of your story, please reach out for help. Loved ones, strangers, professionals, laypeople-we’re here to help. Consider me available.

"Life begins at the end of your comfort zone."(Neale Donald Walsch). The trail does not equivocate and plays no favorites - it treats us all the same. How we deal with this most attractive element of 'the trail' spins the story. It is quite important to invest in something outside one's self and, as I've told many former students, 'Never lose your sense of humor nor your sense of wonder - life is merely existence without them.' "It is amazing how much can get done when no one cares who gets the credit."(Philip D. Chase). Hike on - one foot in front of the other. Be well, stay safe.
