You got used to a type of life and now its over. Unfortunately, the aftermath of a great time is missing it. There was freedom, adventure, views, and camaraderie. The real world is mundane. You need to get out in the sun more. The vitamin D that your skin will produce will help with depression. You have to fight depression by having something else on your mind. If you do nothing it will eat at you. My wife died 5 years ago and I was very depressed. I started following thru hikers on YT and that has helped me a lot. Have fun. Good Luck, Rick

I guess the Colorado trail.( One I want to do someday!) On the depression note.. GET UP! It's harder to get back into a made bed. So make your bed every morning. Get outside and open the windows when you can. If you have a yard, plant something that's able to be planted in your area/zone. Putting your hands in the earth, walking barefoot on the ground is very "grounding". Your energy is stuck on trail it seems. Bring it back to you and ground yourself where you are. I believe that's why a lot of folks pass away so quickly after retirement. They are so grounded at their job that they don't have desire at home. Feeling useless, bored, depressed, lonely etc etc. Girl, bring your energy back to center!! You got this. Go through your gear. Weigh it, rethink it, set it up, repair it, clean it, use it etc. Don't pack it away like it's "over". Get that stuff out and get hands on prepping for the next trek. Goodness.. it's only a few months away. Lol. Buy another map of your next adventure and hang it up. Hang an empty picture frame next to it so you can put that completion pic in it when your done! Small things to keep you motivated. Hang out at an REI or sporting goods store. A fun one... Test new trail foods/drinks that you've never had so you can eat them next time. Set your tent up and figure out ways to do things different this time that'll work better than the last. Test your rain gear on a rainy day. Test your cold gear again on cold days. That puffy etc may not be as warm as it was before. Etc etc etc... first thing you gotta do is GET UP! Blessings for you. 🙌 keep us updated. Cheering you on!

I agree! If you have no lessons in the AM, get up anyway. Find some place to volunteer maybe? Or go for a hike! I get that FL isn't really hiker land, but surely there are some parks around. Lying around begets more lying around in my experience. 🙂

    Juliane,
You are not alone in your level of sadness. These type of feelings seems familiar to those who have finished the AT.
In 2013 Benjamin Turley and Marni Goldenburg published a paper titled " Assessment of Readjusting to life after Completing a Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail."
Their result indicated that the thru-hikers they interviewed have difficulty with the readjustment process, personal life changes, and missing aspects of the AT. The trail aspects that the thru hikers missed were being outside, physical exertion, and the community on the AT. The good news is that thru-hikers developed positive life changes after completing the trail. They had increased confidence and clearly defined identity and core values-several thru-hikers adjusted by being motivated to seek other similar outlets and experiences. Overall, the AT experience " allows the individual to examine their lifestyle and determine their priorities."
You are on a beautiful life journey!

I know this may sound silly, but as an aspiring AT TH’er, I’ve followed countless vloggers over the last couple of years and I find myself a bit depressed when THEIR journey ends. 🤪 I get used to their daily vids and then when the hike is over…they’re gone. Thanks for sharing and staying around for us all to still stay connected! 😉

Your response to achieving a huge goal is perfectly normal. It’s okay to go through an adjustment period - you just can’t allow it to linger. The most important thing is to keep your heart and mind open to new passions. When I finished my first novel, I got myself a puppy. She got me out of the house and got me hiking. I’ve since adopted another puppy after book #4. (No more after that, I swear.) Anyway, my jolly pups are a blessing. I’m not saying you need to get a dog but something will inspire you. Give yourself grace. A spark will ignite.

I had the same problems when I finished my hikes. Listless and missing the trail life. It did get better but took awhile. Projects and planning along with physical activity helped a lot. I hiked across Michigan on a horse trail just to be hiking again. My wife bought me the same AT map you have that still hangs in my dining room 20 years after my first thru hike. If you continue to feel depressed don't hesitate to reach out for professional help.

    Juliane,
One thing that I found that helped me with how I felt after the trail was doing trail magic. I don't know where you are located but If you live within a few hours of the A.T. grab a cooler, pack it full of drinks and water take a few trash bags to get everyone's trash and a big box of snacks. A few camp chairs and go do some easy trail magic. Talk with the thru hikers and share stories. It is amazing how good it feels to be with other thru hikers just talking and giving them the magic you got on the trail. I know it's a little early in the season but it takes planning. and the planning part feels like a goal as well. Good luck with your reintegration into the matrix, but resist is hold.

Thank you for sharing Juliane and telling how you truly feel and how everyday life is, now that your journey is over. Its understandable to feel that emptiness now since your not being woke every morning with a certain goal or distance to achieve outdoors. In the video it looks like you live in a pretty populated area and I'm not sure if there's any woods around you but taking a daily walk through them would help. It does for me anyways and I think its like therapy out in nature and nothing but the wilderness and my thoughts. Which helps me set goals and think of whats best for my next journey. I look forward to your next adventures and no matter where you are, you're such an inspiration and I'm excited to hear whats next!

Hi! We section hikers get sad afterwards too but it must be minor compared to what a thru hiker feels. This summer I did 128 miles of the Colorado Trail and I’m already wishing the snow melts out fast so I can get back out. I recently convinced my friends to do a day hike up there just so I can set boots on trail again. The CT should be your next hike! It’s amazing! Come on out here and I’m happy to help with transportation and/or resupply. BTW, Dixie has a video about post hike depression that’s worth a watch.
I’m glad you are still making videos, it’s nice to still feel in touch. Take care!!!

  • @susietopspin

I can’t say I know how you feel but as a section hiker who dreams of attempting a thru hike of the AT I can understand the pull to the woods and mountains. I miss it when I’m not there. Thanks for sharing your private thoughts and feelings. It really is such a HUGE accomplishment and in some way your life is forever changed. I know Florida doesn’t have rolling mountains but investing in your new gear and keeping your hiking and trail life alive in that way may help. I’m guessing CT? My hiking partner and I talk about you on our section hikes and agree you are definitely my fav NOBO of 2022. I’m wondering if you are watching any SOBOs right now? Happy onward trails to you. 🤘🏻🥾⛰️

When I worked with young adults prepping them to work a weekend retreat, we would spend several weeks training for this particular weekend. When the weekend was done, we all had a depression of not seeing each other preparing, and working towards a goal. We called this a “hangover”. It is normal to feel this and time heals. Be patient, it is going to be OK.
You should look into the Ohio Buckeye Trail.

  • @anthonysmith7280
    @anthonysmith7280 Před rokem +1

Your feelings and experiences are normal HD, anyone that's been on a complete thru hike on the AT feels much the same way afterwards. I did when I completed the trail last year. The way I addressed it was to keep on getting outdoors, hiking when I could and planning a hiking trip to Yosemite the following year for my wife and I. I then started a trail services company in Northern VA this past year - I'm having a great time, it's been a blast.
The ATC certificate is really nice - if the ATC actually acknowledges your hike. Since many of us started hiking the AT last year prior to the ATC lifting it's official COVID hiking restrictions - our hikes aren't recognized. Really nice, right ?? I'll never give money to the ATC.
At the end of the day, consider ALDHA to expand your AT network appiture while connecting with fellow hikers both former and future.
Be well and keep on hammering out there HD, you'll get through this stuff.

You are not alone, we are all with you. Feeling empty it’s exactly the reason why I would love to do the AT, to find purpose! But you have a point! So I hike the AT and find purpose and then once it’s over I’ll be back to having no purpose… never thought about it but sounds about right.
I love the picture on the wall next to the map!
So you are not into day hikes? You can go take a walk in the woods whenever you feel down… but then I remembered there’s not that many options of hikes in FL (reason why I recently moved out and came to MA) but I’m sure you can find a short hike not too far or a weekend trip or something.
Anyway, keep your chin up! Start organizing your next hiking adventure so you will have a goal and a purpose. I’m here for your if you need me. Sending love.

It seems like you have an exciting hiking adventure planned so that is something definitely to look forward to! 😊 I think that having the AT map and the "river crossin" shirt helps to reminisce and keep the adventure going! Also the fact that you documented your journey is incredible so you can relive and remember your thru-hike by watching them! Love how you started the expression "river crossin" Every time I am on a day hike and there is water, I totally think of you and the expression "River crossin". A few weeks ago, I saw a sign that said Swan crossing and thought it was hysterical! So glad you are continuing your channel and your videos! Take care and Happy Halloween! 🎃 😊

I am sorry you are feeling this way, but you do have something incredible to work for, the PCT. Your goal is to save money, and get ready to go again and until then, you can do smaller hikes and how about not just hikes but camping, being around other campers is fun. I know its hard and I have yet to do a 2200 mile thru hike but start getting that gear and hanging it up on a wall. I still love watching your videos and I hope that your life is great and you feel great…really take time to heal your body and get ready for the next one. You can do smaller hikes.

  • @texasone-stephikestheat9933

You are so incredible, and I can completely understand why you are depressed, and I LOVE that you are sharing every day in your week after the through hike. Thank you for sharing with all of us. I am planning my 2023 thru-hike and am going to go back and watch your videos from the beginning of your hike.
It is awesome that you are planning another thru-hike. Is it the Colorado Trail?
Have you thought about relocating close to a longer trail and then helping maintain sections or even better, starting a hostel or organized effort for trail magic, etc., something that would keep you close to a trail and allow you to share your passion helping others? Just a thought.

I got lots of zits when I got home from my thru hike too. It’s odd, because you’d think we would’ve had worse breakouts on our skin being so dirty on the AT, but my skin was mostly fine then. I too, have resorted to buying more gear to hopefully give me a little more daily motivation. Lol

Two many medium thruhikes to guess accurately. Colorado Trail, Arizona trail, and Ouachita Trail all come to mind. I'd guess Colorado, though. In the short term, surely there are some trails near you where you could get out for an hour or three? You'd feel better if you did.

Very typical to have post Trail depression when you get home. I think it's somewhat similar to what soldiers feel when they get back from war and get PTSD. While I do agree that pets are great, they are generally not a solution to a problem, they can be, but they also come with a lot of responsibility once you decide to get a pet. I´m not even sure if just "borrowing" one really gives you a good idea of what it means to "owning" a pet.

I'm so sorry you're experiencing the post-hike letdown. That sounds excruciatingly difficult. My gut is saying that crazy and extreme as this may sound, you really might be best served by relocating to a mountain community somewhere. Really, I do know that that sounds drastic, but I get the sense that hiking owns you now; if I'm right about that, it is probably the best way to find peace (says she who came to the mountains for a four-day visit 36 years ago and never left).

What you are experiencing is also experienced in professional life. You set a big goal and when you achieve it, you have a satisfied feeling at first. But eventually as the dust settles, you think, 'Is that it?' Striving... striving... striving! Reach the goal. Is that it?? Well, you have to look at your motives and evaluate your goals. What do you REALLY want to achieve? What is a worthwhile intermediate goal to set in order to progress toward your ultimate goal? To me, ultimate goals are to live a GOOD life that benefits you AND others.

Pick a long hike near you… save … make a plan for another big hike. But use the middle time to move forward to … I seem to do better when I have goals. I currently have an injury and that is stopping me from working on getting to my goal :( but do something everyday. Plus when you realize that you don’t want to be part of the matrix any longer… one day at a time.

Sorry with what you are going thru...Along with you missing the goal you were chasing is that once we engage with nature it is always pulling at us...I have been on a trail of some kind every weekend but 4 since March and am so dreading winter and the lack of hiking and camping I will be doing...Find some trails in your area and just get out and breathe and focus on your next long hike and it will come before you know it...Keep your head up...😊😊

for some, this is what retirement feels like, at first. One "trick" is to look up the road, not in the rearview mirror too much. Also, for you, from full steam ahead physical to a sudden stop. You'll figure it out.

Another idea--what about going up to GA one weekend and doing some trail magic for SOBOs? Might that help?

The reason why we are drawn to nature is because nature is actually God’s Nature. It’s a way that we can learn about and feel God. Our everyday life in general is un-natural therefore it is far from God. When you are hiking through nature you are surrounded by the essence of God, so when you leave the trail and return home to the unnatural world you can feel the difference. It generally brings up a lot of grief because the way we live is not what God intended for us. Everything God creates has more than one purpose, and that includes each of us. As we grow towards God, by getting to know God we will not only have a sense of fulfillment but we will also have real joy in our lives, which is exactly what God wants for each of us. You will never be fulfilled by hiking more and more trails because what you are actually seeking in your heart is a relationship with God. The trails remind us of that, but the truth is that you don’t need to live in the woods to feel or develop a relationship with God. With your heart, sincerely ask God for love and see what happens. If you don’t believe in God, that’s fine, just be honest and say something like, God, I don’t believe that you exist, but if you do and you have love to give, could I please have some of your love?
If you say this sincerely from your heart you will receive love from God every time. When God’s Love comes to you you will be overwhelmed with emotion and you will know two things at that point, one, that God really exists and two how to receive love from God. By receiving more and more of God’s Love you will start being more and more happy and fulfilled. You will also receive truth with the love as well as many other qualities.
As for your pimples, they are a result of anger that you are not willing to feel or express. This is the same reason why many teenagers get pimples. If I could suggest something, get a baseball bat and allow yourself to feel your anger by hitting something (non living). It won’t take long before you get into your grief. Unfortunately women are often taught that it’s not ok to be angry, it’s not lady like. All of us need to feel all of our emotions, that’s what true humility is. God bless you and keep you.

Sorry to see you so aimless, but you're still pretty badass😁 You set a big goal and achieved it. You planned for a year and hiked for 6 months, with daily goals.
Like a number of other commenters have said, it's normal to feel a let-down after finishing a goal. That means it's time to make another goal. Plan that new business. Plan that new hike. But do something that gets you out of the house early each day, even a one-hour walk, and then work those plans. You'll feel better once you've set a modest or large goal and then set daily goals that move you to the main goal
You hiked the Appalachian Trail! You can easily hike life.

I think hiking and especially thru hiking takes every ounce of your heart, mind, soul and body. Every one of your senses is at max engagement. Regular life not so much. Get up each day, make your bed and don't let the non-hiker in. Peace.

What is regular life to begin with? My life is now, even when I’m sitting in a room at an AMC visitor center where they charge me 200 $ for and I am guessing whether English is the first language of Madam Roadrunner or not. I am hiking since February, did the PCT (this year), 1000 miles of the CDT (this year) and have just 300 miles of the AT left (this year). I never get depressed after a hike, I just plan the next one 😂.

Offer to get people ready for the trail..

when I can't get out in nature I study all the things I can be eating when I'm in nature or how to build shelters , but you need a hobby get out and hike around your hometown or maybe help all the people who are suffering through the hurricane that you just went through , I'm sorry that was rude it just I have a 8 hour job plus 4 hour on the Saturday and Sunday and then yard work and shopping but I don't feel like I accomplished anything either , we all feel that way but you have a lot of potential and time to put it to good use

I believe that every person needs Purpose and Passion to work towards that purpose.
People find that in many ways. You found that on the trail but it was temporary since trails have an end.
Some people find purpose in marriage and building a family 👪.
Others build thier businesses and accumulate money 💰.
    Some find it in religion.
I personally find Purpose in a mixture. I am a Christian and have a beautiful wife of 36 years. We have children and grandchildren. We love our 40 acre farm 🚜 ❤️. I work for a children's home and help provide for them. We are very busy and passionate about life! I have a Great peace about spending eternity in Heaven someday!!!
I encourage you to search out your purpose you will look back to this time in your life as a stepping stone to the Greatness you were created for!!
This is just another "river crossing"!
