Your non-answer was actually a very good answer. That's what gave it away to me.
I thought the man in the mask was an exterminator who sprayed toxic fumes into the afraid man's home.
I first heard this riddle decades ago, but it was phrased as, "A man is running home. He sees a man in a mask, so he turns and runs back the way in which he came." It gives the person trying to figure it out a bit more information to work w/.

I"m not a sports fan. So the first time I heard this, the closest I got was fencing and knights in armor fighting.
alternate answer(?) - the man in the mask (not a criminal) was an exterminator (mask was for job and safety) and had previously that day gassed the mans house to clear out bugs (was not "currently" at the mans home) , so he was afraid that all the chemicals hadnt fully cleared out yet

I'm not one to brag, but I got it instantly. Feels like I've heard a version of it before, maybe, but I'll pretend I'm just a genius.
ahahah. I am so not a sports person. I was thinking the guy in the mask might be his patient of father who was sick. had to have a mask giving him air to survive.
My first thought was that... (Hopes this works and you have to extend the text)
Was that he got robbed at a bank by a man in a mask, and was held hostage at gun point... Thus, he was afraid of leaving the bank, a.k.a "go home"

LOLZ my dad told me this riddle when I was a kid! It’s so funny that the answer is…….
I did not get this one. I went through several options:
The man was an inmate who had escaped from an asylum (so that was his "home") and he was scared of the man in the surgical mask.
The man was travelling home, but there was a masked man on his flight who was hijacking his plane.
The man was prevented from going home because of a chemical/biological outbreak and the man in the mask was a CDC agent (or similar).
The man was in an abusive relationship with another man who was into sadomasochism.
The sports angle never even occurred to me, but then I'm not American or Canadian so Baseball and Hockey weren't really on my radar!
Good riddle though. I enjoyed it. lol
The man was afraid to go home because he'd be made to watch a terrible movie starring Jim Carrey, the man in The Mask. Easy!

I believe I owe someone an apology, Mrs Wes I am so sorry for referring to you as Mrs Wes it's just a respectful thing, as you are married and I'm an old fart I tend to refer to someone as Mrs and their husband's name. So I apologize for this I was just trying to big up Wes on the BOB show as he was getting it tight over being very very drunk " Full credit to the fast show for that line" so I thought give him his place and out of respect direct my admiration to the fantastic relationship you have as you are as nuts as each other and that's a special thing and something to be cherished, you both are as funny as hell and are just right for each other.
