David explained in one of his Session at Sleight School, that it didn't happen on purpose (actually he paid a lot of money for having that custom made gaff shipped to the studios), but after seeing how funny the footage was he decided to let it air, since the shows was recorded. That bit was put at the end of an episode, and you could hear him curse while the credits were rolling.
I love how David CLEARLY searches for the 6 right in front of them and NOBODY there noticed and were still amazed. It just goes to prove that lay people rarely no what is going on and we worry too much about flashing or messing up.
That's funny that you noticed that too, I though I was the only one who caught that. I was laughing at how obvious it was. That was a classic moment and I bet David hasn't messed up in public like that since then. I respect that even though most of them were accept that the trick was supposed to go that way, he openly admitted he messed up and he did it with humor, mad props to him.
I think David Blaine's humble attitude is what saved it. He messed up, he admited it, he laughs. It's okay. He probably blown their minds inmediately after that anyway, so... it's ok.
The David Williamson one always cracks me up. Years later, he had a reunion with Murray and it was pretty great. I have my own cringe story. I was performing at my first paid show and everything was going great. I came to my final trick which was Bill Malone's multiple selection routine using ten selections. I didn't realize that I had messed up the shuffle at the beginning. I found nine of the cards but could not seem to find that last card. I kept it going for a while, thinking I could save it but it was gone and I wound up just looking through the cards and pulling out the card while looking at it, treating it as a "joke". Everyone was confused the whole time because they thought I was just playing them because I had done "magician in trouble" earlier with one of my other tricks. After I was done, everyone just kind of stood around, thinking there was more to my show, that I was gonna save it with some crazy reveal. Awkward doesn't begin to describe it. Since then, I ALWAYS have a back-up (a way to reveal a card or something else I can merge into the trick). I rehearse messing up and what I will do. Thankfully, it's super rare that I mess up something and can't make it a "successful" magic moment for the audience and they are none the wiser. Always bring a back-up. Always.
Eep! This is terrifying, since I have my first paid gig coming up. O__O
One magician I spoke to told me that he almost always carries an invisible deck with him for these situations. "Well, I can't find the final card, but I have this other deck with exactly one card reversed...."

That Murray one is definitely a classic. Always love seeing the kid call it out.
In a regional german TV channel many years ago, there was a magician who f'ed up the "nail under a paper bag"-trick. He actually slapped on the wrong bag and impaled his hand on live tv.
There's a video where the magician impaled the tv host's hand doing that same trick.

I don't agree! It was so obvious that he messed up, that ackowledging it was the right way to go. Otherwise, the effect would have been so dissapointing... I think it's actually even more magical to have a laugh with that PRO (but clearly humble) magician, than to fix the trick however possible. He probably blown their minds after that anyway, so...

I’m glad you mentioned so much so much procedure. Not a magician but a big fan of magic. And the tricks I see the more the forever setups are a turn off
For a while there I was wondering if David Blaine was just doing a practical joke, where he wanted to see how much procedure he could have the audience go through with no actual trick.

It feels like David wanted a way to catch the number on the dice but she hid it so well that he then starts doing random things to buy time and figure out what to do to save it. He tries the riffle trick in which she was supposed to see the ace of hearts but he did it to fast and to close to her face so she basically just chose a random card.
Add one of your mistakes, you have enough character & humble enough to share.

David Blaine really needs to lay down some kind of thread to follow because otherwise it’s just monotone instructions with no end in sight.
I like the first one. He should shoot feathers out of the canon, so that the audience is even more shocked. But it’s all about how to handle such a situation. He could make a funny joke and blame the duck for his failing e.g.
I want smoke and a puff of feathers and then when it opens a fully cooked rotisserie chicken 🐔

The guy in the red bow tie was from a 1980s show called Sky Star Search. It was a low rent talent show and I'm afraid to say, his was no character portrail...It was a TV equivalent of a local village talent show. There are much worse examples of epic failure, but nope, no irony in that performance 😂

I love magic so very much; I wish I was able to be more involved with it but now I am just a groupie at conventions.
Tommy Cooper actually messes up on purpose. But he was actually a slight of hand master and member of the Magic Circle.

13:47 I paused right here. I know nothing of this clip. I am not a magician. However, I'm going to make a prediction just from the bit of wisdom I've gained from my 50 years living on this planet: The magician's mistake here was choosing to do close-up magic with a little kid!
I was so sure the goofy magician was in his character! that's so surprising!
and about the David blaine trick, that was the first trick he did for that audience, and in fact I think he messed up a little in the next one as well! but I think the fact that he showed them he's a human made a huge impact, he had a great a reaction in the end

Yeah, I'm pretty confident saying Williamson told the kid to do that. It seems like his schtick.
That David Blane trick was the most complex and complicated card trick, card tricks are already kinda boring but to add 20 steps is just too much. Complex card tricks are only good magician to magician. I takes someone that understands card tricks to understand why they are being extra. The normal viewer is ok with a pick a card, shuffle, cut, and here’s your card, maybe one more step. That’s why Dave did so much better with something easy like a snap change.
I got the impression that he lost his place and was trying to buy time until he could think of a way to recover.
You should react to Magic Goes Wrong. It's deliberately bad and the tricks do go wrong, but they still manage to fool you. There are some clips available online

ISTR the David Williamson one was discussed on a UK TV show about 50 greatest live TV mishaps or somesuch. Think I've got it on Recording here.
They interviewed Williamson who said it was a new trick he was trying out and that the gimmicked card was specially flown in the day before at great expense. He said It wasn't a setup with Murray as "why would he?" This was his first primetime TV appearance and he wanted to make a good impression.
Parts of that were hard to watch. David Blaine made me laugh (after long setup). Haha Maybe last one was setup? Still hilarious.
For the third guy, you can see genuine nervousness in his face, even at the low resolution, which is extremely hard to fake. He really was that bad.

I think having the trick fail after that much procedure and build up David Blaine would rather admit it and laugh about it than try to play off a really basic card change like that was what was supposed to have happened all along.
I feel like Blaine had already messed up and was trying to recover through that long procedural... maybe?

When you do magic you have to learn how to prepare to improvise from mistake.

Williamson located Murray a few years ago and they reunited to talk about this incident. Murray even wore a similar ugly sweater.

7:29 I disagree. Look at their faces when he turned the ace into the six. Unimpressed at best, confused at worst. They knew he messed up and was recovering. I mean, it could have gone either way, but he chose to lay it out and confirm their suspicions, figuring the rest of the show would go better if they weren't left wondering.

The guy at 8:12. I know why that guy has no script or material and why he uses magic store props. 100% not sure but i think he lied to get on the show saying he'sa "magician". So the producers give him the thumbs up after he shows them a single... magic store gimmick. He goes and buys around 200 bucks worth of magic and finds out its hard. Or maybe he didn't lie and a friend of his told him he could get him the job. How could you pass up an offer like that when all you did was show a few friends something you bought for 20 bucks. Nerves are tough. especially after you've practiced for a week and made next to no progress// LOL could you imagine being in that situation? id still feel lucky to have gained such an opportunity of that magnitude. Wow all of them made it to TV and that guy looks old too so maybe i still have a NNNAAAAAA

OK, for the first one, you always have to keep in mind the possibility that was on purpose, planned and staged by direction of the BGT staff. Shows like these are not aired live, and they're heavily edited and controlled, and many of the weirdos they have on there we're all supposed to laugh at are just acting. With the size of their viewing audience, budget, and advertisers, they have too much at stake to let the skill of randos determine the quality of the presentation. This duck fails smells funny. I mean, the trick by itself is not worthy of a show of this stature, so they were trying to create a memorable moment, replete with the close-ups of the cringe reactions of the audience and judge

I NEVER trust those talent shows. It all seems so set up. The performances. The reaction from the jury. It all feels loosely scripted and set up to me.
@@presc13nt I just decided to search for him, and I found he is a real magician with a website who performs in the UK and has a Facebook page. I still think it's staged, as I've read from so many people who talk about trying to get on the show about how it is. Maybe it's a situation where a small-time magician thinks maybe he can get some publicity even if he humiliates himself according to the wishes of BGT.
When a magician fail, can we ask for a second opinion?
