- Billie Joe Armstrong has been fronting Green Day for decades, and he shows no signs of slowing down. The California-born punk rocker may have started Green Day in the 1980s, but he has actually been recording music from the time he was a toddler.
Armstrong was just five years old when he cut his first single, and he knew immediately that he wanted to record music for the rest of his life. In addition to music, Armstrong is a big sports fan, and he even considered football as a backup career if the whole music thing didn’t pan out. Kids, if you have goals, like Mr. Armstrong, and myself, pay attention to the other musicians you form bands with. I had all the goals, all the ambition, and a determined, persistent, work ethic. I had talent, as it only took 2 years and 2 months, from the day I got my first guitar, and started teaching myself, and I was able to play the entire Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force album, among many other pieces of music, whether metal, rock, jazz, classical, or blues. A few years in, I started playing bass and joined a band. While very talented musicians, they didn't have any real work ethic, and were more concerned with getting an alcohol buzz than with getting their instruments in their hands. If you don't see the same dedication, persistence, and commitment, you have, find other musicians. Don't quit, but don't overcommit to people who are going nowhere. Try to always maintain optimism, but acknowledge the reality around you.
Excellent advice I wish I had heard years ago. Thank you for thinking of the next generation. Stay safe.
Good points, but note, that Green Day is pretty much Billie's only band he was ever in. That's pretty lucky in my book

I saw Green Day and I never planned on it. It was something to do one evening. The tour I saw was American Idiot. I was blown away by the show. Im not even a fan really but what the band did for fans was amazing. The show was electrifying.
With a few minutes to kill before a business meeting at Peet's Coffee, I wandered into a music store in the same mall. That's where I met Marie-Louise. What a warm, cheerful, beautiful soul! Chit-chatting at the counter as she rang up my purchase of a book, "The Rock n Roll Singer's Survival Manual," it came out she'd taught "Billie Joe" as his vocal coach. That's right; Billie Joe Armstrong. She took me back into her office and showed me the T-shirt, hanging on the wall, he wore for the recording session mentioned in this video. She also said she attended his recent 50th birthday, and how Billie Joe had come full circle from the little blond boy she'd taught from ages 5 to 13, to "the whole rock 'n' roll thing he did," to back to being that sunny person again. What a great experience!

My older sister introduced me to Green Day when I was young in the mid 90s, they still played just smaller clubs, I loved the music and begged to go to a show at a club, but wasn't allowed to go cuz I was young lol. Billie was and still remains my first huge crush 🥰

I'm a longtime fan of his, but I recently dreamed that I was on the Amtrak, he was nearby, and some creepy guy started groping me. Green Day deserved it plenty. They have thirteen albums in their discography, all very good albums, four of them great albums, they have been a band since 1986 and have been releasing music since 1991 with almost no lineup changes.
