What Nobody Told You About Green Day

- In 1994, Green Day’s major-label debut album "Dookie" stood out among all the alternative rock and punk rock albums in the '90s. It was different, edgy, and explored raw themes about boredom, anxiety, relationships, and sexuality. "Dookie" became one of the most popular albums for punk rock youths of the time.
Today, Green Day is still alive and cranking out new hit tunes even though their sound has evolved over the years. It’s sometimes hard to believe that the band has been around for over 30 years, and their music has definitely aged like wine. Here’s a look back at this great band from their life, legacy, and tragedy that they had to face. We will always have the time to listen to them whine.

Best Green Day album: GO!
kerplunk or smoothed out slappy hour
Yer mom
Dookie insomniac 1039 kerplunk
Nimrod and dookie
Grunge insomniac,i love every song on that album!
He’s been with his current wife (they started dating) around the time of Kerplunk. The song “2000 Light Years Away” was written for her. She’s not just someone woman he married later.
Alton Lyter - You’re right! That was a shitty way to refer to the love of his life...his wife and mother of his children! My parents passed away 21 (dad) 20 (mom) years ago, this year and I think about and talk to them every single day too!
yeah i was like wtf? adrienne’s been around longer than dookie lol he wrote ‘80’ on kerplunk
Alton Lyter during the Woodstock 94 mud fight you can see Billie give someone his wedding band before he starts throwing mud back at the crowd.
I also thought it was odd that he noted Amanda breaking up w Billie when their "1994 debut album dropped"...dookie is their third album.. He could have meant their debut on a major label but he could have just said that too
Also song "80" was for her, 80 is a changing word for Ady (Adrienne)
“Initially, they were a metal band called Condom”
169 likes. I had to unlike to keep this precious event
Apropos Racer it’s 170 now
I also had to unlike, but then I had to like.
Right i had to rewind twice to make sure I heard that right 😂
Better than used condom
“someone else” *adrienne* her name is *adrienne*
80 please keep taking me awayyy
All i can say is Green Day deserves a lots of credit. 30 years on the scene and still going.
Green Day- the only band in history to ever open for themselves.
Their Woodstock set was something else.
The mud fight was awesome but three random dudes kept playing with their instruments and that sucked
I feel bad for the drummer who went to college full time. He would’ve been a famous millionaire 😂
The baddest ass band in the last 40 years
Green Day wouldn't be Green Day without Tre
Jolene Wallace nirvana, literally any metal band
There is the same story with Blink 182 and Travis Barker joining before the went big... The other guy also left because of college, I believe?
@@MrSit87 and now forever known as "the other guy"
American Idiot was the album I listened to in my mid teens and felt really close to my heart, with my mother kicking me out of her suburban house after one to many screwups, and my dad who had been divorced sense I was 8 took me in near downtown, and helped me go through the emotional breakdowns I had in the months following my mom kicking me out. Particularly, Boulevard of Broken Dreams really encapsulated town I felt, where I felt like I had no one to confide in, and just not knowing what I should do. Now, it reminds me of how I have grown as a person, and try to smile more often.
Me too! I hold American idiot very close to my heart. I’m only 14 but it makes me nostalgic. That album has been with me for my whole life. I’m so sorry you went through all that. I’m proud of you for making it through.
2:56 Dookie was not Green Day’s debut! It was their 3rd album. Their first album came out in 1990 (39/Smooth).
They mean thats the album that put them on the map . I don'0t think they were being literal .
It was the first one on a major label
It was their major label debut.
It was their major label debut
And then kerplunk.
"3 of the bands best known songs... She, Sassafras Roots, and Whatsername" Green Day are my all time favorite band so i know all their songs really well but im sorry, none of these 3 songs would be considered their "best known songs". She was at least a single off dookie that had decent radio play but SR was one of the least popular songs from the album?
whilemyguitarblowsup I mean he could have named any three songs from dookie
Nice profile picture ripkurt
Pulling Teeth is one of my favorite Green Day cuts
I listen to a lot of music, country, rap, rock, classical, pretty much everything. And Green Day is my favorite. They are amazingly talented and have some amazing lyrics
Yes!!!
Green Day is my favorite
I listen to Elvis and Slipknot
Yes no?
@@christineparis5607 oh course yes is way better they have steve howe the best guitar player ever!

“The frightening events of Woodstock ‘99...”
*shows Woodstock ‘94
He was def. showing footage of shit on fire and limp bizkit, and then referenced the 94 show after.
He literally talked about Woodstock 94 right after and used Woodstock 99 as a reference. Watch the video before you comment.
Okay glad it’s not just me
Wolf in Sheep's clothing yeah but he was comparing the two, so when he was talking about 99 he should have showed 99 instead of 94.
@@zacharycremen7545 😐...He was showing Woodstock 99 while talking about it. I don't recall there being a giant bonfire at Woodstock 94.
What you don't know about Green Day: Billie Joe Armstrong is a Vampire cuz he never ages
That meme aged like milk. He’s definitely starting to show his age now.
No. He caused the drought at the fountain of youth and it's only now that the effects are wearing off lol
Adrienne Armstrong not someone ok.
Jesus of Suburbia what?
@@theun-knownmusician5468 His wife.
Thank you 🙏
At first I thought you were saying that she is not ok
@@evilenchilada3830 I'm still trying to figure out what he said.
What nobody told you about green day is that they are timeless and very good.
yikessssss you call 80, the lady he’s been married to for mannnnny years « sOMEoNE eLSe » but mention amanda by name 😳
There's a song on one of their albums called Amanda
Jessica W // yeah but thats not the point- plus its one song. billie has been with 80 for years (has written MANY songs about her) ,had two boys that are now in their mid 20’s, n they didn’t mention her by name at all- but mention an exes name.. yikes. maybe i’m looking too deep into it but oh well.
How disrespectful for Adrienne
I was gonna say I though her and Billie were together since like kerplunk I thought
when they're talking about Amanda they don't even mention the song titled Amanda lol
Probably because it came out after Billie's tweets
Green Day..Gods Favorite Band??
Dam Straight!!
EVERY green day fan knows that they went by sweet children and that john kiffmeyer was the original drummer
Ikr
And the fact that Billie's wife is named Adrienne
How you gonna mention The Network and not The Foxboro Hot tubs?
Joseph Crook ha didn’t mention pinhead gunpowder either or bjs record label
Dav Swrs wack
Or Pinhead Gunpowder
Malachite Eyes they’re all pretty interesting with a pretty unique sound, which is why I feel they should’ve mentioned all of them. I just prefer FBHT out of all of them
Green Day redefined Punk when the genre was beginning to stagnate, and brought it into the mainstream so it could survive. They're legendary, and only The Ramones are equally recognizable outside of the fan base. 🤘
Nope also siverchair
@@mastersupreme6126 silverchair id great but not as popular as green day, and silverchair is more of a post-grunge band, not exactly punk. still love both bands though
@Luke Robinett Offspring and Rage Against the Machine are another two of my favorites. While I was in my middle to late teens I remember listening to them until the CD or cassette reached the end.
@Luke Robinett Had Operation Ivy not turned down the record deal and broke up, we may never of had Green Day or Offspring. Green Day owes all the success to Op Ivy, and Tim and Matt of Rancid.
Punk would have survived just fine without them..... People have this image that punk went away in the early 80s, when that's far from the case, it just went underground, where it should have stayed.
I love Green Day. Haters can go to another video, these dudes are legends
What are you smokin'
they're in the rock and roll hall of fame for a reason right?🔥
They are for people who know what it really is....

Amanda must be regretting dumping Billie joe
She definitely thinks about it every night lol
@@alexanderwalker2327 yeah
These guys are beasts. Def a band to model ya self on
If you haven’t seen Green Day live I recommend you go do it before they get old because god damn they are amazing performers. I got to go for my 16th birthday and it was my first concert, I’ll never forget it. They were amazing
Awesome band seen them live in UK twice. "Wake me up" live at Wembley is one of my stand out memories although, whilst their stage presence is amazing, audience participation seems key to the performances especially when a kid is invited on stage to play with them. It shows a real human side and they don't come across as heads up their own arse rock gods like some other bands I've seen.
I saw them in Milton Keynes Bowl about 15 years ago. Easily one of the best live shows I've ever seen.
It’s so obvious that they still enjoy what they are doing (lengthing sets of live shows back this up....they love being up there).
Gutted I couldnt get tickets for later this year (job issues) but seen them many times over and they are better every time, weirdly.
Billie Joe wrote Good Riddance around 1990 when Amanda ACTUALLY broke up with him, he brought the song forward during the Dookie sessions but the others didn't think it fit.
I thought it was billie joe who wasn't wanting it on the album
@@Mr.CliffysWorld maybe I'm wrong, do you have a source?
@@thesaxon5847 Good Riddance was written when they became famous but didn't fit in the album Insomniac. The song is not about break up with a girl, but a break up with all the friends that they think Green Day were Sellouts! So the Billie said to them - good riddance
@@devanegeroy I can't tell if you're trolling or not, that is completely false.
BJ: “It’s about an ex-girlfriend who had moved to Ecuador. In the song, I tried to be level-headed about her leaving, even though I was completely pissed off. So I named it ‘Good Riddance’ just to express my anger.”
I may have the year wrong, but there are quotes from him such as above, Google it if you need proof.
@@thesaxon5847 I am not sure. See the lyrics there is nothing about love. Probably about letting things in general go. I also know the version that it was written after Dookie about what I said. See the song lyrics 86 from Insomniac. Connect them with Good Riddance. I know this version:
- quote -
Though the song lends itself to many different interpretations, two explanations are the most prevalent. According to the first, the song was written for 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley, California, the club where the band got its start. After the mainstream success of Dookie, many of the band's original fans accused the group of selling out and turned their backs on Green Day. The band responded by writing this song in retaliation.
- end quote -
The other version is what you said but again check the lyrics.
Why did I know all of this, I guess my early teen years of being completely obsessed with them paid off lol
edit: omg guys it's a joke, don't take it too seriously
In what way did it pay off
@@karzm0323 presicely
@SierraPhantom idk man what more wise thing would a 13 year old do... I made my best friend through Green Day, started playing guitar because of them and improved my English skill in trying to understand the lyrics lol

It's 2020! Where's the Network reunion tour?
I dont know where it is but hopefully it will be available on their website in the comming months or at the very least when September ends
Wake me up when September ends
There are announcements about it now
A a a hope you like money money 2020 pt 2
I’d like to hear that Cigarettes and Valentines album. I wonder who stole it.
I think that was made up. Most likely Billie was having writers block which means they are writing plenty of songs but he thought it sucked. I'd bet my house thats what really happened.
Just Want2Help exactly, if it was stolen, they would have leaked it by now.
Well, if the master tapes weren't stolen, then we would've never gotten American Idiot. It's a pick your poison situation.
They weren't stolen. Its in plain view. Billie talked about the tapes "being stolen" and then coming to the band asking them if it was ok if he sang about these types of issues aka being political. He pretty much said without saying that he wanted to scratch the album and go a different direction. It was a brilliant move, but nothing was ever stolen.
I've always said they were never stolen. But I also didn't believe the album existed either.
I was part of the mud fight at Woodstock ‘94. Besides hearing Longview on the radio, it was my first Green Day experience.
Lol that’s cool. That’s history.
For me, Insomniac is the very best album of Green Day....what an energy!
ADRIENNE IS THE MUSE OF IDIOT NATION. SHE'S A GODDESS. SHE DOESN'T DESERVED TO BE CALLED "SOMEONE ELSE". SHOW SOME LOVE FOR 80
I don’t know if this was mentioned, but Green Day also wrote a song called “Amanda” in the ¡Tre! Album

Just saying, dookie wasn’t a debut album
Their debut was either 1039smooth or kerplunk was. Depending on if you see 1039 as an EP
@Lmao Die maybe they meant major label debut, that just occurred to me
Really Well done video with all of your information! Excellent job....... didn't see the whole thing yet.....I saw 75 percent of it.....Well done! Great job!

Iconic and Legendary Band from the 90s ❤️
I first saw GreenDay in 1988. It was a small place in NorCal. My X GF back then introduced me to them. They were alot of fun live back then. So great memories
I bought every album by Green Day from 1,039 to 21st Century Breakdown and learned how to play most of them on Bass and 95% of the video was news to me. Good Job
One of my big regrets is not seeing them live the last time they came through my town. I had just taken off a bunch of work before that, so it wouldn't have gone well to try to get that off too. But next time! I will see them live!
As a Green Day super fan, I have to say that this video was pretty good.
I found it boring but just because he clickbaited me into believing i didnt know something about these guys and i didnt not know something sooo it was entertaining but the end felt short lol
mari_who_ana I think it’s good for beginners/those who don’t know much about the band. Not a perfect video but they got a good amount of information in.
rocket grunt simple mistake 🤷🏻♀️ they discussed their other albums so I really just think it must have been a typo in the script.
Love learning about some of my favorite bands!
The original drummer has gotta be kicking himself daily over the amazing success of green day
I knew a lot of this being obsessed with them when growing up. However, I really really appreciate your detail to research. Excellent work. Would have loved to have heard about their side projects Pinhead Gunpowder and Foxboro Hot Tubs, though. And that Billie and Jason had a record label called Adeline records in which a good few of their signed artists found success.
Did they just called 80 as "someone else"?
