Honestly my main takeaway from this whole show was that it doesn't matter if you're black or white, gay or straight, abled or disabled, cis or trans: whatever your identity, you can be an incredibly annoying, terrible person.❤
Honestly, the only thorough theme in Glee is that you can have anything "against" you, be it a mental or physical disorder or illness, if it's your race, sexuality or gender, you can be just as much as anyone who fits into the "straight, white, cis, neurotypical" ideal.
You can be just as annoying, enthusiastic, happy, lively, loving, stupid and mean as anyone else.
It's a nice moral and I love that it's mostly shown through negative traits, lol
THEY'RE ACTUALLY ALL TERRIBLE and that's why I think it's representation goals.
That is the main intended takeaway. But it was very much of the "there's one race, the human race" line of thinking; especially the episode where Will Schuester said that they were "all minorities" because they were in Glee club.
All the characters are so trash it’s so nice

Rachel choking at her audition and Kurt absolutely slaying but Rachel being the one who gets accepted was the most feral thing Glee ever did cause wtf??? No sir
My biggest issue was how Kurt was written. He deserved SO MUCH BETTER!!!

Grilled Cheesus was so iconic. It’s like The Game (iykyk): you might forget about it but it always comes back to haunt you when you least expect it and it takes weeks to forget again.

One of the worst parts of Glee is how they constantly brought up how talented Mercedes was and how she was under appreciated but never did anything about it???? Like the show writers put it in the dialogue, it was a plot point in like every other episode but nothing substantial was ever done about it
It irritated how (especially in the earlier seasons) it was painted as though Rachel was the only hugely talented member of the Glee club when MERCEDES AND KURT WERE RIGHT THERE!!

its because rachel is literally the main character of the show. objectively mercedes has the best voice but when it comes to show choir and broadway, rachel has the edge.
Right? When I saw Glee Live, my family were STUNNED at Amber Riley’s voice and thought she was by far the best, and they were right. She carried that tour on her back and proved that Mercedes deserved to be far more of a main character.
Year late but my adoptive aunt was an extra for Glee, she appears in the Cheerio auditions and the tots episode. Bigger blonde lady with a ponytail that was trying to shuffle, and then a couple seconds of her passing by the principle's office eating a cookie. Her little cameos have lived in my head rent free for years and I still smile when I think about them.

I will say one of my biggest gripes with season 3 is that they didn’t follow through with rachel blowing her audition for NYADA. she gets in like 2 episodes later. I think it would’ve been so much more interesting to see kurt go to NYADA and rachel have to come up with some kind of back-up plan for the first time in her life. she literally never had any real consequences to any of her actions on the show and it got really annoying.
Absolute Tea. Although, I will say teenage me absolutely loved that glee was a world where everyone (generally) got what they want and/or had a good alternative

As someone who was an original Glee stan (it's not my fault, I'm mentally ill), it is so cathartic to see someone else suffering how I did. Honestly, you're dead right that the show was at its best when it was unashamedly a comedy. When it tried to deal with serious topics (don't get me started on the crime against humanity that is 4.18), or lean too hard into fanservice as it did more and more in the last three seasons, it became the unbearable mess that it's remembered as.
This is personally how I feel about the show:
Season 1-2: fun campy nonsense that causes severe psychic damage (complimentary)
Season 3: bullshit (mostly complimentary)
Season 4-6: bullshit (derogatory)
Oh my god 4x18.... I had wiped that from my memory

I mean the other seasons are definitely absurd lol but not absurdist if that makes sense. They tried to ground the show after the first season and that pushed it into the “so bad it’s good,” (until it wasn’t lmao).

Yes, 100%. I think once the original showrunners realized that the main Glee audience was cringey theater teens, instead of jaded adults reminiscing on their time as cringey theater kids (as intended) they kinda panicked and tried to be "responsible." Which was just a disaster.
The number of times I’ve tried to get through Glee and failed is embarrassing for several reasons, but mostly because I wish I had seen it all so I can properly watch this.
You'll be in for a ride nonetheless I couldn't stand to watch glee but so far this video is enjoyable

Honestly the biggest plot hole (it isn't but I'm being dramatic) for me was the Mercedes 'lazy' storyline. They tried to convince us that Rachel was a better singer/dancer/performer than her but they were WRONG! There are literally so many performances with choreo that Mercedes kills effortlessly and a majority of Rachel's solos are just her standing still and singing...so the hypocrisy of Will to single out Mercedes in boot camp and Jesse to call her lazy for not having choreo for that one audition is unacceptable!! And that's how Sue C's it.
now that you mention it, that sounds mad gross. I can't even remember my reaction to it at the time, but I remember being annoyed when Jesse said that.
Mercedes deserved so much more, like all of her performances and I mean ALL of them are so good because Mercedes sang them.
Also, Amber Riley literally won Season 17 of Dancing with the Stars! She absolutely knows how to perform; they just wanted to maintain a narrative that while Mercedes' character was phenomenal in singing, it was encumbered by a lack of performance skills. But as you said, this doesn't even hold up canonically because Mercedes does well in almost every performance with choreography involved.
That drove me crazy! Mercedes sang what is in my opinion a more difficult song. And we've seen in performance like River Deep Mountain High that she's capable of learning choreography (not to mention, Rachel didn't have any choreography either).
I think Mercedes is mega-talented, but honestly, she wasn't as committed as Rachel. The one thing about Rachel is that she knew what she wanted, and wasn't going to stop until she got it. And although I 100% understand that Rachel was handed a lot of things, Mercedes didn't show as much of a drive. So I do kind of get the plotline of her being 'lazy'. I don't like them using the term as it contributes to the harmful stereotypes of black women, but in the episode when they do the Dreamgirls number, she shows that her drive isn't as strong. She is in the same position as everyone else, being asked to do the same thing dance-wise, she is making quite a few excuses as to why she can't do it. I 100% think Shue was harsh, but I think it's a good example of how her mindset is. Mercedes is so incredibly talented singing-wise, but I guarantee (based on what we have been shown) that the way she approaches singing is she knows she is talented and kind of just goes for it. Rachel is shown consistently putting in passion and perfecting her craft. I think the disco episode changed Mercedes a bit and made her realize how she had to put herself out there in a different way. Because when we catch up with her as an adult, she is shown to have gone pretty far. being a better performer isn't about how much you move during a performance. If it was, Brittany and Mike would be the best lol. But Rachel had a raw talent that she was constantly perfecting, which despite her terrible personality and disregard for others, is truly inspiring.

Dianna just took the husk of a stereotypical mean girl and really made her SOMETHING. Her depth, her voice, even her intonation tell a story and make Quinn such an interesting character.

Glee was so.... to me and my friend group, it was kinda shaping. We went to a big school in a small town in Germany, and in 2010/2011 we were around the same age as the Glee Club members, and we had our own little choir (not because of Glee, just a coincidence), and our school drama club and we had our own life drama happening and our own struggles with sexuality and kinda being the outcasts... don't know where im going with this, i think i just wanted to say that my favourites have always been Kurt, Santana and Mercedes (and Tina but she literally got zero screentime). From day 1 watching, i adopted Kurt as my son and the moment Santana and the Troubletones did the RumorHasIt/SomeoneLikeYou Mashup, that has been IT for me. Santana was my gay or pan or whatever awakening. I liked her before, but that made me fall in love with her. Also, this perfomance is so deeply engraved into my brain that its the first and also often the only thing i remember extremly clearly when someone mentions Glee (and, of course, my love, the reunion performance We Are Young). After seeing that mashup, I wrote an arrangement for Someone Like You for our own choir inspired by it and it felt fantastic performing it. Although it took us months to learn it instead of three hours 😂😂
Glee had such an impact on my life during that time... so thank you for bringing all the memories back. Even though a lot of them are not that nice, they all are pure gold.

Just wanted to say that these episode convinced me to watch Glee for the first time. Even though this show is incredibly criminal, I feel that I have connected with it so much. This silly show has rooted itself into my heart and I am glad.
The main difference between Will Shuester and Sue is that she is portrayed as being in the wrong and is framed as such while Will is portrayed as doing wrong things but is framed as being justified. Because of this, Sue, while awful, seems more genuine and relatable, and Will seems way more selfish and delusional... Plus Sue actually cares about people instead of merely giving lip service to it in favor of reliving his glory days through overparticipation in his students' lives.
