Your mention of Baker Street really caught my eye. I'm a few years older than you but I was raised by my very restrictive grandparents. Less sheltered, more like a captive so it took me a few years to fully get me feet under me after graduating HS in '72. So, to a degree we were in the same place in the 70s. Ladies and gentlemen ... I have been a guitarist for 57+ years and I can guarantee you will never hear a live vocal performance better than this one or more true to the original recording.
Some musicians actually like to perform and are smart enough not to make the recordings to difficult to replicate live with a normal size group on musicians. To many moving parts makes any thing more difficult.

LYRICS On a morning from a Bogart movie In a country where they turn back time You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre Contemplating a crime She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running Like a watercolor in the rain Don't bother asking for explanations She'll just tell you that she came In the year of the cat She doesn't give you time for questions As she locks up your arm in hers And you follow 'till your sense of which direction Completely disappears By the blue tiled walls near the market stalls There's a hidden door she leads you to These days, she says, I feel my life Just like a river running through The year of the cat While she looks at you so cooly And her eyes shine like the moon in the sea She comes in incense and patchouli So you take her, to find what's waiting inside The year of the cat Well morning comes and you're still with her And the bus and the tourists are gone And you've thrown away your choice you've lost your ticket So you have to stay on But the drum-beat strains of the night remain In the rhythm of the newborn day You know sometime you're bound to leave her But for now you're going to stay In the year of the cat

I won't delve into the artistry other than to say both songs are uniquely rich, original have meaningful lyrics that speak of love but neither are conventional love songs. They both convey a wistful melancholy that reaches into the soul. Two great, great songs that are probably underappreciated.
@@ob7483 Wow ! What an iconic group. There own sound, their own tunes that are just so easily recognized as theirs, if one knows them.
To this day when I hear; Sister Golden Hair, one of my class mates that I had a crush on comes to mind, as if we're still sitting in English class.
My god, does this bring back memories. I was a 22 year old in the US Air Force stationed in Spain. All we had was AFN, radio Luxembourg, and all the albums we could get our hands on. And in Europe, this song was on so much. Thank god for CZcams. I’d never seen Al Stewart performing this until just now! Such a beautiful song, it never gets old.
Al Stewart is so underrated. Amazing singer-songwriter.
Al Stewart is one of the best artists of the seventies. This song never gets old.
Just makes me feel GOOD........Calming and Restful........
I was at his concert at Coachhouse in San Juan Capistrano 2 years ago, he was just as good, if not better because he was quite humorous. The sagacity came with age. :)
It is a beautiful song! The English are just excellent musicians!
I remember listening to this song while driving with my uncle to a ballgame. It lit my interest in playing the piano.
My dog doesn't like this song for some reason.
Incredible song. Brings back so many memories. That saxophone though!

Al Stewart said after he finished The Year of the Cat, “If that’s not a hit, then I can’t make a hit.” And obviously it was. What a brilliant song and record.
It was one of my favorites back then. I remember it like it was yesterday.

This song takes me back to a much simpler time. Pure classic song!!
What can we say... It's one of the greatest songs of all time... Brother AL... Way to go man... 😉
Ladies and gentlemen ... I have been a guitarist for 57+ years and I can guarantee you will never hear a live vocal performance better than this one or more true to the original recording.
You are exactly right. This live performance shows just how good they really are.
Some musicians actually like to perform and are smart enough not to make the recordings to difficult to replicate live with a normal size group on musicians. To many moving parts makes any thing more difficult.
I agree, I have never heard a better live performance
Fantastic musicians , vocal
Piano intro is hauntingly beautiful.
Music takes me away to the wonderful creative 70's
Greatest decade in modern music !

@@GaryFox11000 I saw them play several times, back in the 80's. The band trades instruments throughout and they stay tight. Yes, fantastic musicians.

Time passages, Antartica, Past present and future y otros mas.
The music today doesn't even come close to what we all enjoyed back in the day! I'm so glad I was around when the Year of the Cat came out. So much talent! All the lyrics have a meaning! Something we can all relate to! Awsome!!!!🙂
Howdy from Texas....I’m 61 now and this music brings memories of good old times. If I ever get my time machine working, I’m going straight to the 70’s and this time I’m staying there and never going to leave

FOREVER ....THE YEAR OF THE CAT...CLASSIC.
I thought that was Eddie Van Halen at the beginning there for a second wow! And this is one of the top 10 songs of the 70s, I can never escape playing it almost weekly for over 30 years now as an adult! The musicianship, story, variety, and mood it gives is so warm, like a fat loaf sitting on your lap, purring!
This song is a masterpiece. When I worked in radio and played songs like this, actual records on the radio I took some songs for granted, now I look back and think what an honor it was to play them for my listeners in a bygone era. No technology in those days just the music

This song is one of my favorites too. I wanted to hear the instrumental part in the middle of the song. I always thought there was a violin but actually is a keyboard! Oh well nevermind! Excellent song!

The first song I learned to play on the piano. 45 years later and I'm still playing it. It is timeless, just like Time Passages. Al is a Magnificent musician!
Let's see your piano playing video Sir🙏
But, did you know that the fellow playing the piano for Al in this performance was none other than the guitarist, Peter White? He handled keys and eventually guitar for Al, but here, I'm almost certain that was him at the piano. He is one of the most well known smooth jazz artists on classical or nylon string guitar in the world. Check him out.

Thank you Tyler L., I don't think so, I've seen Peter Wood pictures. Must be someone else.
Yes, Peter Wood is the pianist. He co-wrote "Year Of The Cat" with Al Stewart. Not to be confused with Peter White, who is playing the other keyboard.

LYRICS
On a morning from a Bogart movie
In a country where they turn back time
You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre
Contemplating a crime
She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running
Like a watercolor in the rain
Don't bother asking for explanations
She'll just tell you that she came
In the year of the cat
She doesn't give you time for questions
As she locks up your arm in hers
And you follow 'till your sense of which direction
Completely disappears
By the blue tiled walls near the market stalls
There's a hidden door she leads you to
These days, she says, I feel my life
Just like a river running through
The year of the cat
While she looks at you so cooly
And her eyes shine like the moon in the sea
She comes in incense and patchouli
So you take her, to find what's waiting inside
The year of the cat
Well morning comes and you're still with her
And the bus and the tourists are gone
And you've thrown away your choice you've lost your ticket
So you have to stay on
But the drum-beat strains of the night remain
In the rhythm of the newborn day
You know sometime you're bound to leave her
But for now you're going to stay
In the year of the cat
