I am 76 and have lived with music all my life and have over 1,000 LP's/CD's starting in the 1950's. Each decade has produced its own stars and Bruce was certainly one of those of the 80's. However I felt that after the 80's the standard started to decline and I have bought virtually nothing since 2000. I feel privileged to have lived in what has been probably the best period in history for popular music.
For a long long time I have thought much the same thing.. But at the age of 55, I no longer play CDs or Vinyl much, yet I am enjoying more music than I ever have….because CZcams has it all there, all the great stuff from the beginning of recorded music basically… but what it also has is a lot of music I would never have found before YT came along. It might be great new covers of old classics, or else it might be brand new music being played by the kinds of artists you’ll have never heard of, but they know how to write and play real melodies, not that worthless crap that we hate, churned out by the famous but talentless twerking hacks of today. You just have to delve into all the stuff YT brings up whenever you play a song… It’s just a fantastic new world of endless and practically free music !
Beautiful piano work by Bruce. Also good sound mixing of the other instruments. I've always been one to listen to tune, rather than words. (words important to many people).
I love just sitting down for five minutes, doesn't matter where I am, and just letting life flow past me as I listen to this. I think of people I've met, some no longer with me, some happy in their own lives, and some I lost contact with, and can only hope they're doing okay. I always take time to consider other people around me in a wider context and the life path they are on, and it gives me a massive 'yeah life can suck, but overall right now it's all right' kind of feeling. You are right, man! It´s so comforting to listen to such well arranged music! But at the same time, it is sad to confirm present days high quality music is so poor and scarce....
This song always makes me think of a certain spring break trip to Myrtle Beach back in the 80's. My cousins and I met a group of girls from southern Ontario. One of the girls and I hit it off pretty well. Teenage love. Harmless fun in a simpler time. This was her favorite song. Lisa, I hope you are doing great.
The piano in this song is one of the most beautiful I've ever heard. This song was being played on the radio when I was driving home tonight, it's been years since I heard it ... and damn I forgot how stunning it is. There's something about 80s music that is so special and timeless.
One of my many regrets is that I never learned to play music. I tried to learn piano at the age of 9 but the teacher, a ghastly woman who lived above a bar called the Rising Sun (no, really), would beat me for not knowing something or other, so I decided I must be no good and gave it up. If she had not abused me I could probably sit at a piano today and play the intro to this song, just like we see in the first twenty seconds here, and that would make me happier than if I won the Lottery. But she did, and I can't, and that's another reason why paedophilia is wrong.
It also breaks all the audio rules of mid-1980s hit singles - it uses real piano instead of synclavier, there's no big reverb pop on the snare, the bass isn't a fake funk slap-bass synth. It's not "urban dance", it's not "metal ballad", and it's not Hi-NRG. I don't know the story behind the song, but I bet the record company said "oh this will never be a hit single" but put it out anyway just to shut someone up, and then were surprised when it took off.
I'd be honored if some Bruce Hornsby fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of AGAINST ALL ODDS by Phil Collins and WALKING IN MEMPHIS by Marc Cohn on my YT channel in tribute to a couple of great piano pop standards from the 80s/90s. In my modest opinion, this is an exceptionally good song. Engaging rhythm, thoughtful lyrics and a really memorable melody. Also, the singing voice sounds just perfect for this song.
It is of superior quality. I didn't think he could excel it, and then I heard Mandolin Rain, which I still believe is one of the best songs ever written.
the strange thing is, in these years and it's not just Bruce...they've created music that's forever. The music is good today, but it won't be in 10 years. Trends, hits are constantly changing. But this music is forever.
There isn't a better song to date to play through a good quality surround sound system than this song. Every instrument's sound comes through. I have a quality system, and i can tell you that the bass at 36-37 seconds running in my surround speakers at the back man makes owning a system worth it. This song is worth it! Thanks Bruce!!
80's...I heard it on the radio and loved this song. Despite not having the internet, the hits reached countries all over the world and many of us had no way of knowing how far they reached. Today, reading comments from people from so many different countries, I begin to understand the dimension of this, we have always been connected even without knowing how much. ❤
I DO know why ... because the Holy Spirit helped Bruce come up with this immaculate and tremendous piece of art. We can't even say if it is happy, sad, melancholy or ecstatic, for it is all at the same time. It's love and truth (and genius) - precisely what the Holy Spirit is...
@@sidpheasant7585 Sid there is a CZcams clip where he explains all. He seen poverty, injustice and racism on the streets in his home town. A great vid to watch
@@tommac5924 Yes have seen it, and do like it. I am fairly clear about his motivation, as is he. But I am interested in the mechanism allowing him to give sublime effect to what he felt. That is the miraculous part. We know Bruce is talented, but this piece transcends all the others, and transcends simplistic concepts like happy or sad. That happens when the Holy Spirit swings into action behind us, to give us wisdom, insight, strength and capacity to act... If we do not realise what has happened to us it might be seen as a lost opportunity, though the effect is there anyway. But I did realise when I stopped being "blind", and I'm very grateful for that, so I try to pass on and give back, as with this correspondence to you.
I saw this guy in Manchester many years ago / the support band failed to show up - guess what Bruce strolled onto to the stage and played for 3+ hours absolute legend that is the man
Sometimes a song comes along, it causes the brain to fall In love with its sound, the words to ring emotions deep within and the tune to forever be imprinted upon our very soul.. always to be able to create these same effects down through the years whenever we hear it.. memories, feelings and emotions.. the stuff music was made for… this song is it.
I bought this Album when it came out in the '80's and have loved it since then. I love the the whole Album, in fact. It's August 21st 2022, and I will never get tired of watching and listening to Bruce Hornsby. Excellent Pianist! Thank you for posting this song.
Music from the gods, just beautifully crafted, a wonderful flow of a song ! This tune means so much to us who grew up through the 80’s and listened to such timeless classics……..
I am in my early 20s - I had just passed my driving test - I am driving home in the summer in a beautiful countryside setting with the window down listening to this song - now, 36 yrs on, I still love this song and that memory is still so strong - this is my all time favorite piece. Thank you 80s for being so great :-)
Thank you, Holy Spirit, for taking human genius and raising it higher, filling it with more meaning that we can fully take. But we try, and as we do it's as great as it is humbling. It just takes the breath away... And when that happens, whose breath fills that void? You know...
Have been playing this ever since it came out, consequently my girls were reared on it. My 24 year old told me the other day she had this on her 'Homesick' playlist while at Uni. None of her house mates had ever heard of it and were completely converted. I feel I have helped moved civilisation forward a millimetre or two!😢
These musicians were perfecting their craft not chasing money and popularity .It came anyway .They were contented to just share their love and wisdom through the music .I feel so much pain living in this present version that the world has taken on and thats because the 70s ,80s and early 90s gave me such a happy and peaceful time that I just cant adapt to whats going on now in music . Thank you Bruce !

the strange thing is, in these years and it's not just Bruce...they've created music that's forever. The music is good today, but it won't be in 10 years. Trends, hits are constantly changing. But this music is forever.

@James Tudor Me too :)
@James Tudor A bit tricky...as I don't have a piano at the moment! 😁
Incredible piano playing? This is a piece of cake for Hornsby. You should check out some of his other stuff.

What a beautiful song and that intro is 🔥🔥🔥
I think this is the most appropriate time to be listening to this song.

Nearly 40 years later and constantly puts a smile on my face.😇
Now in my 80th year, this is one song that has stuck with me over the years, brilliant music.
Stay strong ..and live long to enjoy great ballads like this!

Incredible vocals and the piano tones are nothing but perfection.
as a hip hop fan..let me say this.. this song deserves more views
.Timeless music..
hip off is fucking garbage trash noise
Firstname Lastname --- No it isnt, you probably listen to the wrong type of hip hop, the ones that involve sex, drugs and cursing
A.R.S Moves: Hey, plenty of good hip-hop involves fucking, getting fucked up, and saying words like "fuck". :)
Have you listened to changes by tupac then???
Of course hip hop fans would love this. It is used in one of hip hop's best songs.
Tudo nessa música é lindo. Melodia, letra, clip. Quanta harmonia.

One of the finest songs of the eighties. It hasn't dated at all. I love it.
I totally agree, Bruce Hornsby and the Range, just great musicians period!
lol its dated
The piano from 2:22 to 3:06 may be amongst the finest sound ever heard by humankind
Also from 3:48 to 4:38 the best piano riff ever!
Beginning to end, the piano work gives me goosebumps. My all time favorite riff, a life ambition is to play a cover of this at a gig someday.
Fact!
Thats right

80's...I heard it on the radio and loved this song. Despite not having the internet, the hits reached countries all over the world and many of us had no way of knowing how far they reached.
Today, reading comments from people from so many different countries, I begin to understand the dimension of this, we have always been connected even without knowing how much. ❤

I really don't know why but I get all chocked every time I hear this. What a beautiful, timeless classic. Up there with the best of them Bruce.
Exactly the same mate 👍
Me too😔Reminds me of my Nana😭
I saw this guy in Manchester many years ago / the support band failed to show up - guess what Bruce strolled onto to the stage and played for 3+ hours absolute legend that is the man
He's a powerhouse solo act just by himself hey!
A timeless classic by Bruce Hornsby and the range, thanks for this.

Surely one of the very best pop piano solos ever! Every note - perfection.

Among the top 5 songs that makes me love the 80s music so much despite not being born in that era. What a masterpiece!

Just brilliant 😂
Real music right here 👌
What a great day to have a 'Homesick' playlist. Might make one for my kids. Thank you!

Haha, well done.
This piano melody is so iconic. Also, love on the video when the drummer first kicks in. Brilliant.
So so true they were the lovers of music truely no fame chasing just doing good music for the masses God bless them❤❤❤
