About Port de Balès from Bagnères-de-Luchon:
Port de Balès is not only well-known due to the much talked about ’chaingate’ incident. It is also an incredibly beautiful ride. Not many cars go here, so it is a cyclist’s paradise. In fact some of the road to Port de Balès was built for cycling. Before the first Tour de France appearance, the last five kilometers was just an old unmaintained and impassable road. But the Tour de France organizers looked for something new to challenge the riders. So they had the last five kilometers paved. Since the new road was built this mountain pass has appeared in the Tour de France at least five times, and in the Vuelta at least once. In 2010 the pass became the scene of the ‘chaingate’ incident. Andy Schleck wore the yellow jersey on the climb up to Port de Balès, but had mechanical problems with the chain. Alberto Contador used that moment to ride away from Schleck and won the Tour de France with the exact amount of time that Schleck lost due to the chain problem (a few years later Schleck won the yellow jersey back, as Contador was found guilty of doping). The ride starts in the charming Bagnères-de-Luchon, one of the most visited towns by the Tour. From here the road follows ‘Route des Cols’ toward Col de Peyresourde. After four kilometers the route leaves the main road and the ride becomes a cyclist’s paradise. From here to the top it is all cycling bliss.

    Adding music to the ride:
Most cyclists would agree that the ride to Col du Tourmalet is awesome. But when it comes to music opinions are very mixed. This is why we do not add music to our rides. We simply do not want to spoil your ride with music you do not like. But it is quite simple to add it yourself. Open an extra browser tab. Find a site that offers music (Spotify, CZcams, etc…) and pick the music you like and enjoy the ride...

What a beautiful ride! Thank you. I’m annoyed I somehow never did this when I was in the Pyrenees, and it’s too late now, but at least I can see what I missed, thanks to you!

I saw hitchhikers which we don't see in the states! Made me wonder even more how these videos are made. Were they trying to hop on your BIKE? :) Thank you for the great scenery and rides!
