  • Surrounded by no less than fifteen snowcapped peaks above 3,000 metres, climbing to the ski-station at Superbagnères deep in the Midi-Pyrénées opens up a whole new world of freedom all the way to its 1,800 metre summit. Starting from the beautiful spa town of Bagnères-de-Luchon, also host to the start of the Col de Peyresourde and Port de Balès, the road traces its way alongside the river Pique as you wind your way up and around the mountain. Don’t let the average gradient of 6.3% lull you into a false sense of security though as the road regularly holds its form above double figures from the first couple of kilometres. I’m often surprised that it’s only featured six times in the Tour de France so far with greats like Bahamontes, Hinault, Lemond and Millar all being triumphant on its slopes but, to be honest, that’s the most fulfilling thing about Superbagnères, its relative anonymity nestled amongst better known climbs feels like a secret Pyrenean gift that just keeps getting better the higher you climb.
    Start: Bagnères-de-Luchon
    Length: 18.5km
    Summit: 1,800m
    Elevation gain: 1,170m
    Average gradient: 6.3%
    Max gradient: 12%

    Rode this last month. Did Superbagneres, Hospice de France and the Portillon on same day. Got to summit of Superbagneres by 8am with sunrise coming through the clouds. Beautiful climb. It’s why we ride.

    Wow I tried this climb a couple of days ago and it is a monster... at least for a non-climber 79kg type with 36x28t. Beautiful scenery the entire way but starts with quite a kick coming out of Luchon and the last 300M up to the ski station is the death touch.

    Super work, you showed us the beauty of the mountain and the effort you put in Mike Cotty ... with the heavy breathing we can conclude you are mortal :P ... Fantastic work with cameras and some nice shots through jungles, the snippets with real noises from around like the waterfall were good to hear other than really nice music selections on all of your Col Collective rides...Kudos to everyone involved!!

    Mike Cotty Hey Mike what size of stem are you generally riding? A fitter put a 110mm on for me which is a bit longer than stock on my Cannondale SuperSix Evo (I think that one is a 100mm). I love the longer stem while climbing out of the saddle as it allows me to lean forward a bit more and have the bars in front of me rather than "behind me" if you know the feeling I'm talking about! Let me know your opinion on this sensation as I know you love climbing out of the saddle and are super smooth!

  • @gmale3211
    @gmale3211 Před 8 lety

    I really enjoy your videos. I am thinking of making a once in a lifetime trip from Down Under to cycle some European cols. I am interested in how much car traffic there is. In your vids, the roads are remarkably empty. Is it always like that?

    Mike have you taken the d125 to the top of the climb to Hospice de france? This last summer I climbed the super to a total fog, wanted to climb to the Hospice de france but didn't...... would it be worth it next time?

      Absolutely John, in fact I had to bring it to the fore again just last Saturday. I've put a lot of use into my Carbon Road Drive (I'd say around 2 years of regular roadside use) and it's still going strong. I can get over 100psi into the tube and it doesn't break my arm in the process so overall thumbs up. Hope that helps. Ride safe. Mike

    Wow Mike, do you ever sit down on a climb? How on earth do you maintain stamina dancing out of the saddle like that all the time? You're like a Contador or a Chris Horner!

    • @TheColCollective
      @TheColCollective  Před 9 lety +1

      +BoxCarBoy12 Ha! It just feels more natural to be out of the saddle. Thanks for the compliment towards Contador and Horner, I don't think I'm in their league though! Thanks for watching the vids! Mike

    • @TheColCollective
      @TheColCollective  Před 9 lety +1

      lee a dorney Hmm, good question Lee. I'd imagine picking a favourite climb is like picking a favourite child....one reason why I don't have kids ;-) I rode the Nivolet last month, unbelievable! Colle delle Finestre would probably also make it into my top 3. As for a power meter, I used to use one but I was missing a lot of good things always focusing on that little black box on my handlebar so I took it off so I could enjoy the view!

    • @Schlingsi
      @Schlingsi Před 9 lety +2

      May I add, I'm not obsessional about PM's training or efforts comes from inside, in the mind... in a UK winter theirs no way I'm riding along in 2nd gear freezing @ at a certain wattage...I use mine for performance monitoring, no more and it usually freaks me out lol bit like when the HRM goes to 185 bpm lolz - so I put it on the compass lolz
