Col de Peyresourde (Luchon) - Cycling Inspiration & Education

  • As one of the oldest climbs in the Tour de France, first featuring in 1910, starting from the spa town of Bagnères-de-Luchon the Col de Peyresourde is a deceptively tough ascent. 14.5km in length and although only climbing at an average gradient of 6.5% up to 1,569 metres above sea level don’t be fooled by the numbers. The road ramps up straight out of Luchon, continually tickling the legs and edging you ever closer towards the red. It was on this very road that during the 2007 L’Etape du Tour the furnace-like summer sun did everything in its powers to melt the tarmac and make it feel like I was wading through quicksand. The Peyresourde’s a cunning little fox, regularly applying the pressure and threatening to turn you around and send you packing back to Luchon for an early shower. Take your time, keep the faith, and you will be rewarded for all your hard work. With 4 kilometres to go the road opens up to reveal the Midi-Pyrenees in all its finest, putting everything in perspective once more. The climb is one thing but the descent is something else altogether. Without doubt, an absolute masterpiece of a mountain.
    Start: Bagnères-de-Luchon
    Length: 14.5km
    Summit: 1,569m
    Elevation gain: 944m
    Average gradient: 6.5%
    Max gradient: 12%

    Watching this has me rethinking my plan of bike touring through Europe laden with panniers. Maybe I should just rent a caravan and bring a road bike instead. This series of videos are absolutely stunning and so beautifully done. Thanks so much for doing these. I'm getting so antsy to get started. Cheers!

    I lovethe comment about the Peyresourde enriching your soul. I find my soul enriched each time I swing my leg over the bike. One day my life will slow down enough for me to get some daily soul enrichment (that's the goal , at least;))

      September is a great month to ride it. The Pyrenees are so quiet and welcoming at that time of the year! Enjoy!

    Wow the landscape looks so quiet and vast and sort of relatively untroubled by human influence (hard to find the right words as a non-native speaker), watching this makes me feel a very strong sense of wanderlust. Amazing!

    Thanks again Mike. I did this climb last summer during two weeks in the Pyrenees and it was one of many favourites. Your video was a wonderful way to relive the euphoria and inner peace that rides like this bring.

    Did it several times.
    Did the full Luchon-Bayonne in July. Going back there next summer.
    More friends are coming this time thanks to your videos! Every time I watch it it brings me back there.
    ;)
    I'd like love to see the one on Pailheres though, the most beautiful climb I did, after the Stelvio.

    @Pretre69 Před 9 lety +1

    Another great video. I've done it several times & it's worth noting that, if it's hot,as you go through some of the villages (Garin in particular) the heat reflects back off the walls at the edge of the road & turn it into a furnace

    • @TorDworshak
      @TorDworshak Před 9 lety

      Awesome, I found that it gave the video a bit more of a complete feel. Without any shots of a descent or a clear finish, it becomes slightly anticlimactic, but the addition of a simple descent shot eliminates that and wraps up the videos really nicely.

    • @MikeCotty
      @MikeCotty Před 9 lety

      Agree! We don't have descending shots for all climbs as we had a super tight time schedule but it certainly adds an extra element that we really like so will do our best with what we have and in the future. M

    I lived what you enjoy and live Mike Cotty ...Not in exact way... you are a mad mad climber... I just cycled from Aberystwyth to Great Yarmouth...across UK... 326 miles...not that bad since we did it in 4 days so 80 miles approx a day...Have done a few 120 miler and 190 milers within a day before...But this was surreal...in terms of soaking in the beauty of the UK countryside....Had some Cat 4 and Cat 3 climbs ...but nothing as compared to what you do...Would love to do them one day...Just sharing my journey...Cheers!!

    Keep up the great stuff Mike...

    • @TheColCollective
      @TheColCollective  Před 9 lety +1

      Thanks Scott. For this climb I rode a 34x25. I'll fit a 28 if it's really steep. I'm a huge advocate of compact gearing. It really suits my higher cadence. All the best, Mike
