Let me tell you a story:
There was a man named Edmundo Santos. He was a radio host in Mexico. In his show, he talked about the original spanish dub of Snow white, which had a poor song adaptation to Spanish.
Edmundo received a letter invited to Disney Studios, where a man in a suit saying he was Walt Disney told him to adapt a new song called "When you wish upon a star" to spanish. While they were talking, a man sitting in a piano was only hearing silently to the conversation.
Edmundo did the adaptation inside the train while going back to Mexico, with the new version called "La estrella azul". He was called back to Disney studios ,where he was received by the man sitting in the piano, who told him he was real Walt Disney. Walt offered Edmundo to be the director of Pinnochio spanish dub.
That way, Edmundo Santos became the director of all Spanish dubbings of Disney movies for 35 years until his death, and He was the first spanish voice for Mickey Mouse.

    • @nyanpirethecat2257
      @nyanpirethecat2257 Před 6 měsíci +200

That story reminds me of the story Osamu Tezuka told in a 1981 Japanese Magazine interview about his once in a lifetime encounter with Walt Disney at the 1964 New York World's Fair. While promoting the Astro Boy series, he was waiting to get a chance to meet Walt after watching one of his speeches. Tezuka managed to have a conversation with Walt about the possibilities on doing a collaboration together which Walt was open to doing. Walt also congratulated Tezuka and his staff at Mushi Productions after voicing his love of the Astro Boy Anime (which started airing on U.S. television at the time).
While the idea was never revisited, Disney made up for the missed opportunity by airing "The Fantastic Adventures of Unico" and "Unico in the Island of Magic" on Disney Channel during the 1980s which were based on Tezuka's Unico manga series. Disney's frequent airings caused Tezuka's Unico to actually gain a dedicated cult following with American audiences. To the point that the original manga gained an official translation in 2012 due to older anime fans being very fond of Unico.
Heck, the Kickstarter Campaign for the upcoming "Unico: Awakening" manga series was actually funded by a lot of American fans compared to Japan and ended up becoming an American/Japanese collaborated manga. The campaign's success even caught the attention of Scholastic (The largest publisher and distributor of children's books in the world) for publication in the U.S. as part of Graphix imprint. Unico: Awakening is even getting handbooks and an activity book to further expand the world of Unico in Summer 2024 (which is when the first volume will get publicly released outside of backers).

Fun fact: if you recognize the piano music when Mickey looks at the portrait of Walt Disney, it's an instrumental of Feed The Birds from Mary Poppins, but there's more to the story.
Feed The Birds was one of Walt's favorite songs. He loved it so much that he would call the Sherman Brothers into his office every week to have them play it for him. Even after Walt died, Richard Sherman would regularly go to his office and play the song.
The music you hear in the special is not just Richard Sherman playing Feed The Birds, it's him playing the song on the original piano, recorded in Walt's office.

As a hunchback fan I feel like we only really get little crumbs of this movie from Disney these days. There’s barely any merch, maybe it will have a nod or small section at a Disney event but that’s pretty rare. So having this moment of Tom Hulce singing as Quasimodo again genuinely made me bawl. I know it is small but the fact they let him sing for the 100 year anniversary special is so touching. I love the touch that he’s sitting on the roof though that’s perfect. Will Disney continue to neglect this movie, yes, but this was nice and will supply me with dopamine for a good while

The majority of them, including Mickey and Minnie, use their designs from the 1942 short Mickey’s Birthday Party, because of the anniversary occasion. The ones that don’t are Daisy (hers is from Mr. Duck Steps Out, her debut), Pete (his is from Officer Duck, the debut of his current design), Scrooge (from Mickey’s Christmas Carol, the first time he was voiced by Alan Young), and the chipmunks and duck triplets who use their 50’s designs. They did not have to use all these different designs for the characters at all, but they did with very deliberate choices, and that amazes me.

I'm so tired of people painting him to be this greedy monster. He's always going to be my favorite character. I love his personality and spirit. I love what HE stands for. And what Mickey Mouse stands for....is us. Our childhood. Back when we were dreamers. Back when we could be mischievous and make people laugh.
Then, "Feed the Birds" kicked on, and I outright sobbed. That was Disney's favorite song, and he'd often have it play while it looked out the window, contemplating. They played it at his funeral, and a little bird flew by. He was not a perfect man. But none of us are. And you CAN love these characters, these movies, while still acknowledging the company's issues at large. No one should try and take your love of the characters and films away from you. No one. One thing I have to bring up about this short is the European Spanish dub. For context, Disney films didn't get dubs made in Spain until Beauty and the Beast, and all of the movies prior to that got their dubs made in Latin America. Some of the older movies got redubs in Spain while media like the Direct-to-DVD sequels, Kingdom Hearts and House of Mouse gave these characters new voice actors due to the dubs being made here.
Once Upon a Studio used archived audio for the older characters and it was super nostalgic to hear characters like Peter Pan or the fairies from Sleeping Beauty speaking with the voices from the Latin American dubs. Now THAT is attention to detail.

I might be overthinking this but I find it interesting how most of these characters are on a first name basis with each other.
For example: Moana when she asked Merlin for help, Minnie when she told Peter Pan to get the folks upstairs and he addressed her as 'Captain', Prince Charming telling Eric to get his dog after he stole his shoe and Rapunzel telling Micky she'll deal with Kaa when he was hypnotizing Clarabelle.
So, perhaps these characters talk to each other and interact when everyone else has left the building on a daily basis?

To be fair, Disney didn't create most of these characters. They adapted them. But most of them are so different from their source material and usually way more iconic, than said source material, that they might as well be creations. Damn. This Studio really did have a huge influence on society.

I swear to God I thought the short would forget my favorite Disney movie aka The Rescuers Down Under, but they actually thought smart and made 2 gags of Cody and Joanna, which actually made me smile big! They deserve to be in the short not only because it was the first Disney sequel (even though it failed at the box office but that's not the point), but because it was the first Disney movie to entirely use CAPS animation. Im glad every Disney animated movie classic was brought into this special short!
