- I haven't talked about The Incredibles yet. And that's shameful. The Incredibles is an amazing story. Pixar's best, in my opinion. The arc of Mr. Incredible, as he recovers what he lost and learns to integrate who he was and who he is now, is simply amazing.
Men should be strong, yes. Men SHOULD be strong. But that strength is not an absolute, all-conquering strength. We need others. That is not shameful. That is beautiful.

The Incredibles is easily the best superhero film, likely because it isn't trying to be. It's the story of a marriage and family and the struggles and challenges they face.
The superhero setting in this story does what I love most about speculative fiction. It mythicizes the story and brings the metaphorical into the literal to exaggerate the point. The Incredibles does this flawlessly.
Great points and for me, its one of the best superhero movies ever made in history. It makes a beautiful presentation about how Superheroes can be complex characters showing their invulnerable but also vulnerable sides to balance things out. My favourite superhero movies have this great element of balance that is so important.
I recall an article or interview that the director said "its not a superhero movie. Its about a family that happen to be superheroes"
“I’m not strong enough” is a trope of the superhero genre that I don’t think can be overused.
Tony Stark, obsessing over protecting the people he cares about, yet ever fearful that it will never be enough.
Times when Barry Allen, even as the Flash, was just not fast enough.
Luisa Madrigal, who was secretly caving under the pressure of being the -oldest and- strongest child of the family.
Heck, Anakin Skywalker even fits the trope, albeit more as a cautionary tale.
It’s honestly so humanizing to see these powerhouses cave to the crippling feeling of inadequacy. It echoes a solemn truth that no one is immune to the toxic cycle of not being “good enough.”
Actually, Luisa is the middle child, while Isabela is the eldest. But yeah, she is the strongest.

Is she? I always assumed she was the oldest because she gets mentioned before Isabella in “Family Madrigal” and in “Surface Pressure” she sings “give it to your sister, your sister’s older” but she could just mean older than specifically mirabel. I guess it was probably mostly the vibe I got from her as feeling that responsibility. And I relate to her most as the oldest daughter in my family. I could totally be wrong here.
Anime too
I think that's actually the main dislike people have with Marvel's new heroes. They're overpowered and perfect (to the writer), but they also *think* they're perfect and don't have fears of failure or try to improve.
To add to the list, there's Toby Maguire from the Spiderman I grew up with, pretty much the entire cast of X-men, and Harry Potter to draw from popular movies. :)
Since becoming a husband and father this video and the movie bring me to tears. Reliance on your spouse is a virtue to understand and be proud of. Always working together to be a better team

I love how in this movie, they don’t make him a blundering fool, but is actually a capable, smart, alpha male but his ego can get the better of him.
Absolutely! Too often we see the strong character or really most dads in media turned into dumb meatheads or weak losers. Mr Incredible is a good man with intelligence, courage, and integrity. But he is also very human and has flaws he has to grow from.

One thing you can also notice is how, during the final battle, Mr. Incredible starts to show an inclination for understanding the strengths of others and how to best use them. He trusts Dash to go long to catch the remote or for Helen to handle the Omnidroid's laser gun. A lot of media will depict someone who is very physically strong as not being the brightest and needing someone else to take the tactical lead, but the final battle depicts Mr. Incredible as adaptive, intelligent, and capable to leading others. This is something I REALLY wish the second film had touched upon more because I think it shows a very interesting progression of his character and other ways for him to be strong.
Good point. Mr Incredible really is shown to be resourceful and more than just muscle even earlier in how he defeats the first omnidroid. He figures out it’s weakness and wins even though he isn’t in peak shape yet. This comes up again in the final battle as you mentioned.
Because I'm formulating, okay! I'm taking in information! I'm processing! I'm doing the math, I'm fixing the boyfriend, and keeping the baby from turning into a flaming monster! How do I do it? By rolling with the punches, baby! I eat thunder and crap lightening, okay? Because I'm Mr. Incredible! Not "Mr. So-So" or "Mr. Mediocre Guy"! Mr. Incredible!
Something that I noticed when watching this video (though it unfortunately didn't get mentioned) is that the line "We're in this together, for better or for worse" (i.e. Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl's wedding vows) are not only said at the beginning of their journey when they get married but also at the crux and climax, just before they fight they Omnidroid. That (i.e. their wedding vows) are what proves to be strong enough to defeat the threat to their family.

I immediately picture, “I CAN’T LOSE YOU AGAIN! I’m not… not strong enough.” Proceeded by Hellen lifting up and protecting Bob’s heart. Bob may have been physically strong, but in this situation, he was the weak one needing his wife’s strength. By being willing to accept her strength, in humility, he shows his good character. Had he been prideful, he would have lost everything.
This video hits really hard, and I needed it rn. As a kid, elementary through high school, I never got anything lower than a C. I was an exceptional student. I had no anxieties about my future. Then I went to community college. It was an entirely different environment. I had to force social interaction, the professors weren't as invested in me as teachers used to be, it was much more impersonal, and I didn't have any real desire to be there. It's been draining and depressing. My first year, I was getting low Bs and low Cs, and I was honest about it with my parents. Last year, I failed most of my classes, and I hid it from everyone in my life. This past year, they wouldn't let me back in the fall semester, and my advisor only let me retake one class this semester. It was going okay until my laptop crashed. I lost 2 weeks. Then I ran out of my ADHD medication, so I was overwhelmed and unable to catch up. All this time, I've been desperately trying to catch back up so I could come forward with the truth but soften the blow with the good news that I had improved. But that was never going to happen. Besides people I knew from college, nobody has known about this. My parents think I'm about to graduate and get my associate degree in three weeks. Tomorrow night, when none of us are busy, I'm going to tell them the truth. I've never felt more guilty or ashamed, but this is how I move forward. I'm not strong enough. I need to take a different path than college, I'm glad I finally realized that, but there is no moving forward without being honest with the ones you love and letting them help you. These past 3 years have been the worst of my life, and I have myself to blame for thinking I could get out of it on my own. This is the second time I'm talking about it. I talked to a close friend about it this past weekend, and I'm about to talk to my old youth pastor about it. Tomorrow, I stop hiding, and let my family know everything. It's going to be the hardest thing I've ever done, but without doing that myself, there's no moving forward. If you're reading this, trust me. Always be up front with the people you love, even if it's hard, or it will be much more painful if you wait. We are stronger when we rely on those we love.
Edit: I talked to my parents, my dad was understanding and forgiving. My mom said she loves me, but it will take a while for her to even process what happened. I can't expect her to forgive me until she comes to terms with the situation. I understand her frustration and why she feels betrayed. For at least the rest of this year, I will pick up more hours at my job to pay back wasted money, and I will wait for what I feel called to do with my life before returning to college or finding a trade to go into. It will take a while for things to fully heal, but I know they will, and I'm less anxious about my future than I've been in a long time. I appreciate all the support.

For what it's worth coming from a complete stranger, you're making the right decision. It's probably going to hurt to expose the lies but the only way out is through. Stay strong and remember that you're not alone.

When I was a kid "The Incredibles" was never my favorite movie. Now that I can watch it and appreciate it as an adult, I realize how good it really is. Being about a midlife crisis I'd have to say this is the most adult animation I think we will ever see from Pixar
Master Samwise is the most masculine of us all for showing us the true masculinity in all these great characters
10/10 movie. Most relatable and deep superhero movie ever made.
One thing to note: Bob is, far and away, stronger than even the most powerful non-Super. He's strong enough to bend steel just by tripping on a skateboard. Yet, even at the height of his rage breaking point, he still avoids killing both his boss and Mirage, despite being fully capable of doing so without much effort. Yet, the two of them escape his grasp with their lives (and had Mr. Huph not been thrown through a dozen walls, both of them could have probably walked away from it). Even when he's at his lowest, Bob is in control of his strength, and he won't kill those who are weaker than him just because he can. Bob Parr embodies the phrase "true masculinity is having the strength to exert your will upon others, but choosing not to use it unless absolutely necessary."

As a man shouldering the roles of husband and father, I tend to view myself as the rock that shields and protects my family from the ferocious storms of the outside world! It becomes easy to believe that if I falter, show any cracks at all, display fear, anxiety, or despair, my family will see them and crumble. I imagine them thinking that if something is bad enough to cause me to be afraid, it must be absolutely horrific! So, I cannot fail, for if I do, my family will surely be swept away!
And yet, this is a common fallacy that many of us fall victim to. This is that pride that wells up from deep within us as men and tells us we MUST be strong in all things! We get things done! People rely on us! They depend on us! Not the other way around! But that's just it... We cannot take on these roles (husband, father, etc) alone and also be successful. We will never be strong enough.
And that brings me to one of the hardest lessons that I am atill learning. It is this:
It is a common belief that the act of giving or generosity is a difficult, unnatural action that requires great selflessness. Generosity is lauded as heroic, but there is actually something tied to generosity that is even greater in its difficulty to carry out and higher in its achievement. It is the ability to ask for and willingly accept help when it is needed... The ability to give others the opportunity to be generous and humbly accept that generosity.
It is so incredibly hard to admit that I cannot do something, that I'm scared, or that I need help. I, even to this day, will find myself doing everything I can in order to avoid these things. And yet, when I finally do, it ends up leaving me wonder why I didn't ask or say something sooner... Why was I being so stubborn? When you share your feelings, especially with a loving spouse, together, you actually become stronger! Your cracks end up being a source of even greater strength!

I literally rewatched The Incredibles today. It's one of the films in my top 10 list for a number of reasons. Soundtrack, editing, storytelling and character-development are all on point!

Hold up: Is the lady who Mr. Incredible had to deny the insurance claim the same lady who's cat he saved?
Maybe? Even if she's not, the similarity is still striking enough to emphasize the disparity between Bob and Mr. Incredible.

the amazing thing with the incredibles is if you take out all of the superhero aspects it still works as a very strong movie with nothing getting lost
I think it's worth mentioning that Bob is almost always zoned out until he feels like he has a purpose again. At which point he is much more attentive to his family. True he should be attentive in general, but it does show just how much difference having purpose is to men. And it does so accurately.

I'd guess that in Robin's case his happiness was making other people happy. He wasn't hiding behind a mask of comedy, he genuinely loved and enjoyed making people laugh and smile. In that environment it allowed him a reprieve from his own demons and gave him a sense of purpose in addition to his acting, but whenever he was alone with his own thoughts (or worse feeling alone in a crowd) that's when the soul-destroying thoughts would return. Speaking as someone who's been there I feel I can relate to Robin.

Yeah Incredibles has always been one of my favorites. It and Treasure Planet live in same space in my head. Treasure Planet would be a great video topic. Underappreciated classic.
It's been forever since I've seen Treasure Planet... to the point that I'm not sure I've actually seen it, haha. I will have to revisit it.
You should do a video on Elastigirl someday as I feel she's one of the best female characters who grows to truly emboide what true femininity really is it doesn't mean a woman has to be a damsel relying on a man I believe though there's a slight difference women are our physical equals we mrn have the slight edge in strength durability and stamina while women have the edge in speed agility and intelligence which Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl emboide so yeah The Incredibles showcases both true masculinity and femininity in spades sorry for the essay but I feel a essay on Elastigirl should also be in consideration
This video came at a really good time for me. I'm currently struggling at home with my wife as I'm working a lot of overtime to help with expenses and she is taking care of our one-year-old. I find my very little time off I have immense guilt when spending it alone and I end up attempting to do everything myself when home or just completely give up and don't help at all. Lots of feelings that I'm not good enough, and I know I need to ask for help and try to work together. Thanks for your insight, I'm really going to try and modify my behavior and takeaway a lot from this video. Great content as always, keep it up!

Fitness and coordination/strength might save either your life or someone else' life in an emergency.
Being healthy also means you're less likely to die early from heart attacks, diabetes, and more.
Staying honest and open with your spouse is also vital to a relationship.
EDIT: Also, the Bible speaks of a man's duty to protect women/his wife, but also that the man will need the strength of his wife too.

For me, the best thing about the movie is when Bob belittles his son's graduation, considering it a celebration of mediocrity that is not worth his time. In his view, Dash should rise above the common man and not have to adapt to the world of mundane people.
He has a point, the damn legalistic system is strangling him and sinking him into a world of moral mediocrity and has deprived him of his purpose and identity which was his source of joy and pride.
Helen, on the other hand, believes that Bob is disconnecting from reality and sending a negative message to his children, do not strive to study or excel, because that is for mediocre pathetic muggles and you are a superior species.
Have you played a prank on your teacher with your powers? You haven't done anything wrong son, having powers gives you the right to treat those muggles with as rudeness and contempt as you like.
Bob sends a cynical and irresponsible message to his children that may end up alienating them from normal society.
Interesting perspective! That is not at all how I read that line.
Plenty of people without superpowers have the same mindset as Bob here. 4th grade to 5th grade isn't even moving on from elementary school. Calling it a graduation makes it sound like an achievement, instead of something normal. Bob's comment how "they keep inventing new ways to celebrate mediocrity," is about how these things discourage anyone from trying to be super in any way (powers or no).
Meanwhile him getting excited about Dash pulling a prank is not saying it's okay for Dash to be rude to people without powers, but instead "my son is really talented and I want to encourage him to be proud of his talents and not shamed for having a talent." No one else in Dash's life is acknowledging how excited he gets about being fast, with his sister finding it annoying, his mom saying he has to keep it hidden, and therefore he's not able to tell any friends he may have. To me, this is the same as a parent being excited for kids showing off a picture they drew or something they made in minecraft, even when they were supposed to be doing homework; it's not the ignoring school work that is being praised, but the parent isn't letting that negative aspect shut down the kids' joy or discouraging them from working at things they are good at.
I never took it as him thinking powered people don't deal with mudane stuff but the sheer stupidity of having a ceremony for just going up a grade. That felt more of a dad vs mom thing. Dad thinks its stupid and not noteworthy enough for a ceremony whilst mom wants to celebeate everything about her children. If you celebrate everything nothing is special.

As much as we men recognize that we're called to be the pillar of our homes and communities, the fact is that we cannot do so alone, and this has been true since the beginning. Even in this last century, the truism has been restated as "No man is an island" (and yes, the name of the remote island Bob is taken to for his "mission" is a reference to said quote). I'll be honest, I've been feeling this for a bit now, between not being able to do the work I'm called to do and having to focus on helping take care of my aging grandfather as well as my sister and her son. I know I need this "holding pattern," but I also know how anxious it makes me and how the doubts gnaw at my mind as a result. Thankfully, this movie exists to remind me that I don't need to go it alone, that I have people I can rely on for help.
Truly, one of the greatest movies of all time.

This truly is a storyline that is underrated.
One detail I love about his "I'm not strong enough scene" with Helen is that there is a great sense of guilt and shame in him because he is the one to blame for almost losing them, so when he orders them to stay in the car is not because he thinks he is strong to take on the omni droid alone but rather because he wouldn't be able to live with himself if he put them in danger again. So when Helen kisses him it's very much a comforting kiss as it is a passionate one. I brings everythings in this scene together soo damn beautifully.
There are so many levels to that scene. It's so freaking good.
I’ve said it before The Incredibles is a better than perfect movie. Bob’s scenes after his family is “killed”, when Mirage & Helen rescued him, and the mentioned “I’m not strong enough!” Those scenes stay with you.

I'm just glad that someone is finally giving Bob the benefit of the doubt, and not just calling him a misogynist liar ruled by pride. He's got so much depth to him.
He definitely has pride. And I was perhaps a bit too generous and overstated his altruism. He wants to be a hero because he loves being a hero. No doubt he loves being a hero because he loves helping people, but that does get a bit lost in the early part of his arc. Which is great! Because he gets to rediscover it in a new way with his wife/family.
Oh absolutely, he's flawed. But I don't see enough people empathize with him, so I appreciate you doing so.@@master_samwise

Gosh dang it, every time you post I get slightly frustrated with my relatively mundane life now that most of my major goals have been achieved and I'm working on finding new ones while I search for the right woman. In many ways, I feel like Bob; going to work just to make money but not to provide, being a part of a close church community but also feeling a bit on the outside because I'm the only one in my friend group who isn't married with kids (or kids on the way), I train regularly to be a good protector, but hope I'm never in a position where I have to be. I need to hit the gym.

The movie title is called the incredibles and it refers to Mr Incredible and his family. The family that motivates him to overcome any adversity. Even if the adversary was a fan boy of his. Before the whole public turned on the superhero culture. Seeing them as glorified vigilantes with near destruction power that scares the public instead of making the public feel motivated.

Bob's journey throughout the movie is why Mr. Incredible is one of my favorite superheroes of all time. He can relive the glory days when he finally lets his family be a part of that adventure. As he said himself, his family is his greatest adventure. Great video man!

As someonw who is an artist, both rule 34 and sfw I often struggle with the feeling of not being good enough or just hating what ive drawn in the past and not feeling stong enough to forgive myself, i often beat myself down for my past mistakes and also somebody who is struggling with losing weight and eating healthy I have also felt like a failure for what my life is, as someone who dreams of being an animator and a game designer, it always feels ill never achieve my dreams because of who i am. But the thing that keeps me going, my brother and my very supportive friends, im blessed to have mature and caring
I may be a struggling 24 year old trying to find his way in life, eatching this video gave me more strengths i need, ive learned from my mistakes in the past and must work on myself to improve as a person, Ive left twitter which improved my mental health, and I am working on myself to continue getting healthy again and grow as a person until i reach the end of life. The incredibles is such an amazing film and my all time favorite super hero movie next two spiderverse, and those two movies made me more confident in myself. Thabk you for this breakdown

The men of the West need to be reminded about the healthy ways we can represent our masculinity and it's always refreshing to hear you reference how these examples can be appllied for a healthier masculinity to strive for.
When I see things like the struggle of "Mr. Incredible" and his relatable inability to admit his weaknesses, I'm always reminded of a speech from "Guildarts Clive" in "Fairy Tail".
Natsu (Main Character) was trying to fight a much stronger wizard (Guildarts) for an entrance exam to advance his rank in his guild. After Guildarts revealed his truly overwhelming strength, Natsu, who is normally supremely headstrong and prideful, had no choice but to bow down and surrender out of fear.
The speech Guildarts gave after seeing this admission of weakness and watching Natsu bow before him will always stick with me and has helped to shape me into the man I am today.

We all have weaknesses. To ignore them is to court ruin. To acknowledge them, work on them and accept the help of others to make up for them is the path to fulfillment.

Everybody has weaknesses, and everybody has strengths. It feels like it makes you weak to admit you need help, because it means you couldn't do it on your own, but if you _do_ admit to it, and let others help you, then you automatically become stronger than the next guy who _couldn't_ accept help. You now have someone filling in those holes for you: those weak-points that made you structurally unsound. If you sweep them under the rug, you're going to accidentally fall into them, or perhaps worse, a loved-one will. If we all support each other, we all stay strong. If you make yourself the pillar for others, and you let yourself break rather than letting others assist, you will then cause them all to fall, too. So just let them help you, rather than trying to quietly fall or trying to stand on your own. Besides, they need to feel like the hero, too, just as much as you do: let them feel good about themselves by helping you a little.
Growing up I never liked Mr. Incredible. I always got the sense that he was selfish and arrogant, for having a midlife crisis and putting his life at risk for the thrill. I know he does good, but to me it appeared that he liked the action, the recognition. He spent so long thinking he was untouchable, that the idea he could be hurt was never on his mind, until he thought he lost what he took for granted.

This entire conversation is a great example of why 'the incredibles 2's main storyline starting with separating bob and helen was a poor choice, as the adventure shouldve been the two of them campaigning to change the laws on superheroes so that their children could be themselves

What I love about Mr incredible is that his physical strength is never in question. It’s his moral strength that gets tested. When he starts lying to his loved ones that’s when things go wrong for him, when he’s using his strength for thrills and glory

The incredibles is one of the only truly perfect movies I’ve seen - the only other I can think of right now is The Truman Show.
Every other great film has some kind of problem, whether it’s pacing, plot holes, lines of dialogue that could’ve been improved, missing the balance between action/ideas and emotion - but the incredibles nails every single criteria. Bonus points for being outstandingly entertaining for both children and adults
Sometimes it takes being beaten by the badguy with your wife and kids captured to figure it out. 😂
