    A few years ago photography influencers were saying Nikon was dead and that they'll be sold. A few years later they're dropping some amazing bodies and lenses, Sigma is about to create Z-mount lenses, and now they're buying RED. Unbelievable how wrong they were and how right you were.

      Nikon is a bigger company than just the camera company that sell camera bodies and lenses. Yes that part of their business was in a bad shape after not jumping on the mirrorless market early enough (or with a pro compelling product). Those influencers were only interested in making clickbait videos ... now it is quite funny when Nikon releases new cameras and those same influencers are not invited or do not get the product for the global release :P

    It's just stunning and Matt you sum up the excitment so well 😊
    The odd thing is that one of the reason I started looking at the Nikon Z system a few years back was all the bad rap Nikon was getting. So as a Canon APS-C shooter at the time I looked at the Z6 and could find anything wrong with it apart from the AF which was a little behind the competition and I just couldn't believe my luck when a few peeps started flogging them. I traded my old Canon APS-C gear and got a mint Z6 full frame with superb 24-70/4 for a bargain and I've never looked back. However, the Nikon bashing just kept on happening at every opportunity and they (Nikon that is) just kept on knocking it out of the park so to speak with every release, whether it be another superb lens or their innovative cameras, growing in strength and constantly narrowing the gap. I have nothing but praise for this company which just keeps on astonoshing us all.
    The future is bright for Nikon and us all ... and looking back my gutt feeling kinda hinted somehing special when I first started looking & reseaching the Z system, although to be fair I too didn't anticipate their momentum and this giant leap forward. Love it 💛

    This is the best news ever for Nikon !!!
    So pumped about this . I’ve loved the Red Image . Now for the Hybrid cameras that dominate the market. If Nikon doesn’t do what Canon and Sony do and try not to dumb down the Hybrid cameras as to not compete with their Cinema cameras.
    I say push them both hand in hand .
    Get the Reds more user friendly and the Nikon Hybrids more cinematic and it’s a win win . Nikon can push as a top three or better in a few years.
    Make the menus simple and compatible between the brands also.
    I now struggle more with Nikon mirrorless than I do the Sony a7siii’s menus.

    Hello Matt, Jose from Puerto Rico. This will be my first comment here, even though I've been a subscriber to your channel for a long time. I've never owned a Nikon camera. My journey started with a Konica T film camera in 1976. I'm not a professional, just an amateur hobbyist photographer who appreciates quality products. I've tried Canon, Olympus, and Konica film cameras way back in the '80s and currently own an OM-1 Olympus first iteration digital camera. However, I subscribed to your channel because of your deep experience with Nikon, and the brand has always caught my attention. When I heard about the lawsuit RED vs Nikon, I had said to myself at that time that it would be a matter of time when Nikon would just buy RED altogether. Hold and behold, here we are. My thoughts and suspicions came to fruition. This is big indeed; a total game changer and mighty jolt to the camera industry. Nikon will reign supreme again and everyone will play catch-up now. Canon has been fiddling with rumors of their flagship R1. I think they'll probably rush now, because the potential Nikon has now is mind-boggling. They have at their disposal cutting edge technology, a global shutter potential to blow-up everyone else (including Sony) out of the water. It will be interesting indeed what they have in store.

    Although I dabble in video content I am far from being an official videographer, using video to add additional content along with my stills for my You Tube channel. For myself I will always be more of a photographer than a videographer so do I care about this?......absolutely! To me the combining of these resources will be extremely beneficial to both the Cinematic Universe as well as the Still Image crowd. Nikon can offer existing Nikkor glass to be more prominent and develop future lenses more specialized for cinematic use and file compression, color science and global shutter technology but more importantly high dynamic range sensor technology can find its way into 35mm Mirrorless cameras. Most folks would love to have higher bit rates and dynamic range in their cameras, that is much more intriguing to me than a MP race of diminishing returns. Thanks for the video Matt, sorry this interfered with your weekend trip, hope you have a good time. Take care - Jeff

    Hi Matt. Loved the quick intro on this Nikon purchase of Red. I especially wanted to listen because I'm well aware of your love for cinema and I value your take on this merger. While I own both a Z8 and Z8 with which I regularly shoot thousands of frames, my comments are a personal group of thoughts based on over 40 years as a financial advisor. I don't have the responsibility to involve myself in mergers except as a retail broker when a client owns a stock that is acquiring another company or being acquired. Having said that, I look for a few things to provide an overview on business dealings: Is the "deal" "mutually benefitting? And not just between the two sides in a merger, does the consumer benefit? Does the industry benefit? Does the planet benefit? Do the employees of both companies benefit? If the benefit is fairly real and just, then I look more favorably on the transation (Much of my view is derived from the seminal work of the highly-regarded cultural anthropologist, Ruth Benedict in the 1950's. She really brought the term "synergy" outside of the medical field into looking at cultures from a standpoint of mutual benefit. Please don't blame her for people applying the term synergy to virtually anything and everything during the past 70 years.). To me, what really stands out is: 1. The benefit to Nikon becoming a real player in the Cinema camera space. 2. Red getting access to great optical glass, great hybrid technology, and R&D funds thanks to Nikon's great sales the past two years of the Z8, Z9, ZF and a lot of great Z lenses. 3. I could be wrong about this, but I don't anticipate signifcant layoffs in the next couple of years because of staff overlap which happens all too often in mergers. 4. I also don't see any obvious cannabolization within product offerings within either company. R&D tends to get expensive. You can imagine the ideas that Red may long to move forward on, but have to consider where would the product development funds come from? And, Nikon already knows something about "global shutter" technology, but I would bet that Red has some valuable insights on that technology. 5. Perhaps the biggest benefit may come in the hybrid camera space. Personally as an amateur photographer, I often shoot 5000 to 10,000 frames in a weekend. This coming June I expect to shoot lots of movement photography at the National Specialty for a certain dog breed for the fourth straight year. Yet, I don't shoot much video. I clearly understand that video is of an ever-increasing significance in the consumer social-media space and in commerical photography. This makes me thing that this is a brilliant move on the part of both Nikon and Red. I look forward to seeing your upcoming Roundtable discussions on this matter.

    Amazing story for sure. RED is a small company that has created some incredible dedicated cinema cameras. Lets hope that Nikon does not come in like a bulldozer resulting in RED loosing the brilliant minds that work there now.

    One of the interesting aspects of this and candidly the big elephant in the room is, as you said, mixing the DNA through R&D and the incorporation of AI into design and product fratures/software. This is so huge it is mind boggling. I predict there will be live 3D for virtual reality feeds.

    Thanks Matt it’s great to you so enthusiastic about this brilliant Nikon purchase! I really hope RED are allowed to continue and evolve to have Nikon complimentary tech inside and visa versa!! In one purchase that legal compression spat is in the bin, Nikon get a cini wing and hopefully Nikon learn how Red boosted their dynamic range and the Z cameras get that tech in the future...

    It’s interesting to hear others making fun of Red and Nikon and that it’s a sign that Sony has dominated the market. That Arri is laughing, Nikon is for old white guys, etc. Everyone who shoots another brand always devalues Nikon, and now they’ve mad a baller move that will leap frog them into the cinema space and the haters still hate and laugh. Nikon makes excellent glass and could easily produce cine lenses. The z8 and z9 are great cameras, video is excellent for a mirrorless system but lacking some cine features. You have to use resolve for the color science to be accurate. I’ve shot several projects that have been a mix of Nikons and RED Komodo’s. I’ve been very happy with the results and my wish has been for a z mount RED with the autofocus of a Z9. Now if I could have a Z mount with red color science, be able to remotely pull focus while also utilizing auto focus when needed I would be beyond thrilled. It’s a good day for Nikon, they will be very competitive with canon and Sony moving forward.

    I have said it for years now... whilst all else are about the scream, Nikon is and will remain the cream. Nikon has known what they are about all the time, and their Z-mount is absolute proof of this. It has been in development probably for 20+ years, and I bet you the planning of the RED purchase has been on the cards for many a year too!

    To me this finally makes sense when Red and Nikon dropped legal action over the patent to record raw internally. I was expecting Sony and Canon to jump on the bandwagon but it never happened. This would be why. Also if you look at the Z8 sales brochure you can tell Nikon was trying to market it as a video camera more than a stills focused camera.

    It’s a huge deal! I think Sony and Canon fell foul of Reds patent about video codecs and apologised profusely and backed down. Not only did Nikon counter-sue Red but effectively won. Not only that but they go on to BUY Red! Unbelievable! My first thought was, I wonder what the Nikon logo on my camera would look like if it were Red…

    There may be some pushback to purchase new Nikon-mount Red cameras in the movie/video industry if they've invested in Canon lenses. May be a few years of transitioning. But all things considered, this was a genius move on Nikon's part, primarily to acquire the Red technology and patents for video compression. A definite game changer for Nikon and the industry in general.

    Brilliant move by Nikon! Like this but always concrned that us still shooters are going to be looked after. Hoping and thinking Nikon will continue to support us. For those of us that very, very seldom use our Nikons for video all we need is for Nikon to continue to produce amazing still cameras that aren't paired with the latest video functions as there are a lot of us who don't ever use them. Maybe I'm old and soon expired.

    • @russellwright9961
      @russellwright9961 Před 5 měsíci +1

      There should be no worries for still shooters, this is just Nikon showing how serious they are about the video centric world we live in. We all are witnessing how mirrorless cameras have been the absolute game changers for the cinema world, and this type of acquisition takes it to a new world. This won't destroy Sony, but it going to give them some anxiety that they haven't experienced! But back to your point, Nikon will never lose their minds for still shooting, I honestly think we'll see some things that no other camera company is thinking about; I'm still shocked that no one thought about Auto Capture before Nikon!

  • @ivo_17
    @ivo_17 Před 5 měsíci

    The Red sensor is very easy to figure out! The only thing you need is to replace each pixel with 4 smaller pixels - 2 for shooting with 2 different exposures for the dynamic range, and 2 for buffering for the global shutter, and that's it! It's that simple! 8K requires 33MP, so the Red sensor should be 4x that or 132MP, at least! But, I am guessing it's 200MP, and the unnecessary pixels are ignored! We know who makes 200MP sensors - Samsung!
