      Well, Matthew Tremblay, who is the chief designer at Red just resigned. It’s over for the old Red team. Nikon is gonna destroy it and build its own thing. And this is good. Down with the RED cult.

      @@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas motion control is not what Nikon does, so they leave that company alone, but Nikon makes cameras and what started this was when Nikon put compressed RAW in the Z9. Nikon will take what they need from RED and use for their own designs for Nikon branded cameras. The fact that the chief designer of the hardware in most of the red cameras just quit his job means that Nikon doesn’t need his services anymore. Even though Red was a pioneer in digital motion pictures, they are barely used on professional sets anymore. I sold all my Red cameras over a year ago. And if you look around on any professional set, including TV commercials, you rarely see red cameras being used. Right now the cameras are dominate are Arri and Sony Venice. there’s just a couple of red cameras still around, but nobody likes using them because of all the quirks and unreliability. I’ve had many issues with my Red cameras in the past.

    Nice video, I thought that the video of you speaking was a little dull(low brightness, see 9:19) compare the shots of you and the shot of Keiji Oishi. Clarity is great, the Z8 does a great job.
    I'm waiting for a replacement of my D500, and the Z8 is out of my budget. Hopefully a global shutter on an APS-C, 30-35mp is on the horizon.

    • @jpdj2715

      Folk have an idefix about MP and hope for more. Since the early days of photography, "we" use a linear (one dimension) to measure resolution, because it directly relates to human perception of sharpness. That's also why we talked about "linear magnification". LinePairs per millimetre, Dots per Inch, Pixels per inch are all related to resolution and linear.
      MP are an area unit. How many MP more do you need in order to get double the sharpness - ceteris paribus?
      If your sensor is X*Y=MP and you want to double it, then its linear double is 2X*2Y=4MP.
      To get double the D500, you need 80MP and "30-35" is peanuts.
      Before I point you to the data out there that proves my point, first a bit about the OLPF - Optical Low-Pass Filter (AKA anti-aliasing (AA) filter).
      There is a - sort of - problem in the Nikon ecosystem that however violates the "ceteris paribus" principle if we want to honestly compare: the OLPF.
      That filter was devised of in order to make raw processing easier: wild-assed guessing of missing colours. Your, my, raw file consists of monochrome data elements (the 14 bits) and this needs to be converted into something RGB. Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) turns the 14 bits into 16 bits red, 16 bits green, and 16 bits blue - 48 total, in the ProPhoto colour space. ACR is the Develop tab in Lightroom Classic (LrC).
      The OLPF would help with that, but it "costs": it reduces low light sensitivity, reduces colour space, reduces dynamic range (DR), reduces contrast envelope (DR in one shot/frame), and messes with vignetting. You "S" line lenses cannot perform at their best when registered through an OLPF.
      Removing, however also has a "price": when you see colour noise and/or luminance noise ("Bayer noise" I call that) in blurry zones, darker zones, or low contrast zones of your image from a camera without OLPF, then it has raw processed your image inadequately.
      Last year, Adobe finally has upped their ante under market pressure from Topaz first and DxO later, to offer better noise processing.
      Given the "issues" of an OLPF, Nikon Eliminated the OLPF from the D800 in the D800E version for the first time.
      Increasing resolution makes the issues of an OLPF worse and the added value of an OLPF less.
      These cameras are identical, otherwise and hence they facilitate a ceteris paribus comparison to figure out the effect of the OLPF being present or not.
      Go to the DxOMark website and find the sharpest F-mount lens. We stay full frame in these comparisons.
      Now compare the D800 with that lens to the D800E with that lens. Shocking, right?
      Next, to see the effect of more MP, compare a 24MP D to the D800 - all have an OLPF. Disappointing, right - proves my point.
      Next, compare with that lens the D800E (36MP) and D850 (45MP). Not exciting.
      Now you will have noticed that the D500 does a great job in sharpness. Well, it also has no OLPF, like the D800E, or D810/D850, or Z7(ii)/Z 8/Z9.
      Anything full frame under 36MP in the Nikon ecosystem probably has an OLPF, anything above doesn't. If you know how to calculate photosite density, then you can convert the 36MP to APS-C MP.
      So, while Nikon has no Z500 model, what can you do? Well, a Z 7 and Z 7ii are millimetres smaller than your D500 and can do about 20MP APS-C (DX) mode.
      Put a DX lens on them and there you have it - with a full frame option.
      The lens adapter works very well and if you want to use F-mount lenses, screwdriver AF will not work, but newer will and very fast too.
      A Z 7(ii) is slower than a Z 8 with its AF and also cannot "recognise AI AF" well at LV 10 and below. Other than that, a Z &(ii) would be a worthy successor to the D500. And with people like myself upgrading from Z 7ii to Z 8, they should be available in the used market.
      I shoot "S" class primes only and the f/1.8S lenses are top notch. I plan my shoots around two lenses and work with that, so it's light and convenient.
      If you shoot landscapes, then a Z 7(ii) is great and a Z 8 will not give better raw files. For birds in flight you need to do some work. Larger or slower wildlife in general not a problem. If you are into sports and people-event photography, then you want the fastest recognition AI AF with 3D tracking (which is why I went to the Z 8). A Z f can do some of these things too, but it has an OLPF and I had decided long time ago, that I would never shoot a camera with OLPF again.
      In DX mode it will not give you the 20MP but in size it is smaller that the D500, so depending on your use cases (types of subjects) and your lenses, you could consider a Z f.

You can go and get yourself 5-6 new lenses for the price of a prime. Are they the best no, but neither were lenses back in the day. But photographers worked with them and their flaws to create some spectacular images. Images that have character have life in them. Sterile images though they look fantastic they to me have little life in them. I would get a Ninja over this new Ninja phone. 4 TB SD card is interesting, going to be expensive. I installed a 1tb micro in my Zf, to use for video or overflow if needed.

    I have to imagine a bunch of awkward conversations happening at NAB this year. Nikon leadership doesn’t know cine or broadcast, and cine/broadcast doesn’t particularly know Nikon. Add to that a layer of very recent and significant leadership change, topped off with a two-headed CEO situation. Who really knows what will happen? Publicly the two companies have said the right things of course, and yes Nikon may have the pockets to expand Red’s R&D. That I wouldn’t know. But if I were running a major production house that’s built its kit around Red, I’ve already been on the phone talking with competitors. I’m already testing Red alternatives, because if the Nikon acquisition causes chaos, I don’t have the time or energy to let that get in the way of my next deliverable. In the short term I expect sales will dip, especially at the high end. As for merging engineering between the two camera companies, I don’t have the experience to opine on that with any authority, though my guess is that it will take quite a while for the two divisions to reconcile engineering practices so they can readily move parts and ideas back and forth across the Pacific. So I’m not expecting to see anything obviously cross marketed for two years or more as they begin to move beyond the development cycles already underway-that is apart from maybe a Z-mount Komodo.

      Nah, if you're invested with RED, if you're experienced and productive/profitable using RED, there's no good reason to start shopping around. I understand that everyone has an opinion and I respect yours, and I completely disagree that people should start shopping around.

    • @waveland
      @waveland Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@Chrsly I’ve seen enough mergers in a variety of industries over the years to know that what gets said as part of the initial press releases tells me nothing about what will really happen behind closed doors in the months ahead. Now I don’t expect anyone who needs service on a Red will notice any differences (better or worse) for quite a while, and small operators who are invested in Red have nothing in particular to worry about. But in larger production settings, plan B isn’t optional, and maybe you find out Nikon nails the transition and plan B goes back on the shelf down the road, but in the face of uncertainty, you make sure your backup plans are up to date. Beyond that, it will be interesting to watch. I just hope it doesn’t become a money pit for Nikon, slowing down the development of the flagship stills and hybrid designs.

      BT why the drama. It just can’t go that wrong. It’s not like all RED cameras will stop working overnight on the same day. I just don’t follow your ‘logic’. ‘It might not work out so prepare to sell everything’ ? Z9 runs flawlessly everyday, gets better every six months.

      @waveland Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@MattIrwinPhotography No Matt. Small operators like you and me and thousands of others can wait it out. That’s not what I’m talking about. But if sometime soon I were responsible for signing off on let’s say a $35million volumetric install built around Red or a competitive alternate, the alternate may look like a more reliable option right now. Long term, who knows. But Red’s a tiny company, and a proud company, and when I saw the Nikon booth signage at NAB this morning-with Red at the bottom of the pile in white lettering underneath of all things MRMC-I’m a lot less optimistic. It’s the people, not the engineering, that will drive success or failure. And unless Red is allowed to look and act as a partner to Nikon, rather than a peon, their best people will be gone in no time.
