  • He designed and decorated 5th Avenue mansions for the Astors, the Vanderbilts and, as a character, even makes an appearance in the HBO TV series, The Gilded Age. His name is Stanford White and his life held a dark secret that sent him to an early grave. A tale of lust, leading to the ‘Trial of the Century’ and involving, at the time, one of America’s most successful artists’ models, Evelyn Nesbit, whose story would be retold in the 1955 film The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing starring Joan Collins, as well as the 1981 film Ragtime starring Downton Abbey’s Elizabeth McGovern.

    This story has always fascinated me, was it ever made into a movie? I could imagine a young Elizabeth Taylor as Evelyn

      A young Liz Taylor would have been perfect. The story has been turned into a movie three times that I'm aware of. The first "The Unwritten Law" was made in 1907 just after the events. Then there was "The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing" from 1955 with the part of Evelyn intended for Marilyn Monroe but instead going to a young Joan Collins. The third film was Ragtime in 1981 and it was Elizabeth McGovern's turn to play Evelyn this time. There are clips of all of them in the video.

      @thedarksidepress Oh wow, thanks 😊 may have to check them out, have you watched any of them ?

    • @thedarksidepress
      @thedarksidepress  Před 9 měsíci

      Yes@@elldakini I've watched all three. I know that Evelyn actually went on set when they were filming 'The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing' and spoke to Joan. I would say that this version is the truest to the story but they all have dated rather badly. They also had a cameo of the Stanford White character in the last series of The Gilded Age. I'll be watching series three to see if they follow-up with that but I would love to see someone make another version.

      @@thedarksidepress I Wonder if Joan ever shared the meeting with Evelyn in any interviews, really fantastic info .... I noticed the Cameo of S.W. as well in the Gilded Cage and it was this that inspired my wish to have someone create a current version
      and led me to comment here. Good to know we are on the same page :)
