Whether or not you know the name, Stanford White, you are likely familiar with at the very least the names of some of the buildings he designed. He lost his life in one of them - Madison Square Garden, the second one. Harry Thaw was the mad who got rid of Stanford, and he claimed that he did it for his wife's honor. What that the real reason, or was it out of jealousy? You decide.
This is the story of two very bad men and a young woman who was truly faced with choosing the lesser of two evils. And the case that was the first to be called The Trial Of The Century.

Wow, what a story, I hope you do a story on Evelyn. At the end of the day Evelyn was underage when she was violated so a lot of her behavior was what to be expected. She didn't realize it at the time. I feel for her she didn't have it good with her mom and she didn't haven't better with the men who ended up violating her.
I will get around to telling her story. There will be some overlapping with this one, but she had an amazing life. Her dad was the only adult in her life who seemed to care about her.
With a mother like Evelyn's who needs enemies.

I did not know her mom wss a seamstress.
Probably not R'd by S.White. Imo from: Reading court transcripts, newspapers, and learning about the trials + her testimony(s). She loved S White but he would never ever ever marry her. He needed to belong to society. Covert philandering was permissible, but never marriage. The man with money, jealousy and hatred, who only liked her past with White and whom her mother wanted her to marry... was not a good person. White was her patron w favors (blughgh ) / perhaps her fantasy (or ticket 🎟 to safety ) / A joint escapist fantasy .
- The mother in so many of these stories of Gilded Age heiresses is the pimp. The fathers were often gone or changing constantly. They had the money but no truth. And the poor girls on the side saw the dream and wanted to touch it. Not knowing it was coated in so many cases in poison.
There would be no other way to explain that she was not a virgin. And she married the only guy with money who could, Or would, marry her - Given that she was a showgirl and that name was synonymous for being loose. She desired the best in love and marriage. Her mom desired the best in money and prospects. I do agree she was ripped apart between these two men. I also think that she taunted her abuser/whipper/husband and worked to inflame his jealousy. In a way, it was also a way to be close to Smith. The stigma was so great; She had to stick to her story of being taken advantage of in the trial. But I think it took a large toll on her sanity.
I have been binge watching your shows ~ I like your style. I tried to watch 2 other creators. And I just kept cringing over all the information that they Glossed over or misinterpreted. I really appreciate how many newspaper articles you read to glean the information that you have. I don't know if if this Gibson girl was groomedon't tricked raped or went willingly.
But I know she had difficult decisions to make.

I can't remember the name of the Gilded Age family; but I remember that the wife fired Stanford White
during the middle of a renovation because he was trying to seduce her daughter. Sorry Hot ... The
older I get I can remember the details but I forget names. Drat! I knew some of the grandchildren
of these people!
