STORY:
Stanford White was an architect. He was a partner in the architectural firm McKim, Mead & White, one of the most significant Beaux-Arts firms. He designed many houses for the rich, in addition to numerous civic, institutional, and religious buildings. Stanford's design principles embodied the "American Renaissance".
In 1906, Stanford White was shot and killed at the Madison Square Theatre by Harry Kendall Thaw, in front of a large audience. Thaw was a millionaire who had become obsessed by White's alleged rape and relationship with his wife Evelyn Nesbit, which started when she was 16, four years before their marriage.

The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named âThe Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.
#Graves #Cemeteries #Death
You should do one on the Christine Jessop case from Queensville Ontario Canada. The little girl was abducted, raped and murdered in 1984 and left in a forest. The police found her body a couple of months later. For 37 years the murderer wasn't caught until just last year through DNA. The neighbour was originally convicted and charged with the crime and did prison time. The police thought he was weird so they pinned it on him. Evidently it wasn't him and the person who did do it wasn't even on their radar in 1984.
My goodness, this sounds incredibly interesting. Sad and terribly brutal but I would still love to hear the story. And of course, hearing it from Ron would make it even more interesting đ€. Thanks for suggesting it Mark!!
So sad! Glad they found out who did it! After I found out he died before being identified and that he and his wife were friends with little Christine's parents and was never a suspect or even talked to is mind-boggling especially since he was familiar with the area her body was found! Terrible
I went to school in Queensville Ontario i lived in Newmarket & I'd remember this case very well so sad
That would be Interesting đ€
Thank you for this. Stanford White was my paternal grandmotherâs uncle. Her maiden name was White. This story has always intrigued me. I had no idea where he was buried. Oddly I could never get my grandmother to tell me very much about him.
Harry K. Thaw was my fatherâs great uncle
Iâm
I can see the resemblance with you and him đź
Read The Architect of Desire. The great granddaughter explains this.
I've been waiting for this a long time! I've been obsessed with this story for years! The talent of White, the beauty of Evelyn Nesbit - this story has it all! Reminder AND timer on!
this is for you!
@@FacesoftheForgotten â€ïžđđ, you are so sweet! đŹđ
The movie Ragtime shows the murder at the garden, great movie
@@mollymadison3825 The irony of this story is Stanford White designed Madison Square Garden (the same place where he was killed)!
They had a portrayal of Stanford White on The Gilded Age. Great show, love that time period
I love the old photos you used of the characters in the story - especially the newspaper articles, creepy Harry in his prison cell, and of Evelyn in court!
There was a movie about this called the girl in the red velvet swing. Also, Evelyn Nesbitt was the first Gibson girl. Thank you for showing us Mr. Whites grave and telling us the story. đ
Ragtime
Such a fascinating story! Both Stanford White and Harry K. Thaw were creepy, in different ways and took advantage of Evelyn Nesbitt. Yet we can't deny White's talent and accomplishments as an architect. Love your comment that he helped himself- geez he sure did. I couldn't believe that outrageous old photo of Thaw in prison with all the creature comforts!! This guy murders White in a crowded audience of people and gets away with it. Evelyn was really beautiful but I imagine naive and I'm glad she moved on and continued her career. I noticed she had a son Russell. She claimed he was Thaw's son, but the family didn't buy it. I loved this visit to White's elaborate gravestone and the lovely ragtime piano!! So perfect Ron, loved this!!đ
I loved the đ¶ music too :) great choice.

2022 = rehab
indeed!
True đ
A 1955 movie"The Girl In The Red Velvet Swing'with Joan Collins,Ray Milland and Farley Granger is based on the White/Nesbitt/Thaw story.
She will always be Edith Keeler to me
@@jnolette1030Bravo! I knew right away you meant the Star Trek character-the social worker. Edith Keeler must die, because if she lives an alternate future is created and Nazi Germany will take over the world .
I loved this, Ron! Knew some of the details but it had been a while. I've seen Ragtime and there was a story on Evelyn or the era she lived in on PBS one night. I remember about the red velvet swing . This young lady was beautiful and I'm glad you mentioned about the vintage photos showing hair to be very dark, even if it wasn't, because I read she had copper tresses. She started modeling at a young age and helped the family with expenses after her father died. It seems she persevered even after all this scandal and confusion. Hate to say it but they were both a pair of creeps, even with White being a gifted architect, the husband looked as repulsive physically as he was in character.
Ron I am in your age group. I love the sound of your voice and the way you explain things so well.
I swear he could make Anything interesting. I could literally imagine him talking about the weather for hours. And I would still be on the edge of my seat listening intently đ€Łđ

One additional anecdote regarding Frederick Law Olmsted. He and his brother designed many residential subdivisions around the turn of the century. One such is called The Gardens, located on the north end of Pecks beach which is now Ocean City New Jersey. The Olmsted brothers aversion to straight or parallel lines today causes difficulty among the design professionals during routine survey work in the neighborhood. As an architect myself, I have received sealed surveys with parts of the property labeled " indeterminate" or "area in question". Thank you Fred Olmsted.
Nice job with Central Park, though.
This is a fun story to listen to, love hanging out with Scoby doo and the gang you are our Freddie â€ïžđâ€ïž
Thank you for another intriguing story. My favorite highlights were; learning what you knew about LA cemeteries, and hearing a "registered architect" describe Corinthian ornaments as, "clam shells, flowers and vines and such" to us average folk! You're a gem.
I was surprised to hear that she lived until 1967! I surely would have loved to talk to her about her roller coaster of a life. Wise woman to pick love over money, after all the drama.
Looking forward to this. I'm in the emergency department with vertigo. Waiting for the doctor. Glad you are all here with me.
Hope you feel better đ
Oh, Kathy, I'm so saddened to hear that you have vertigo. My Mom suffered with it. Sometimes she would feel deathly sick/nauseated because of the spinning sensation. Hope that you feel better soon.
I hate vertigo!! Get better!
Oh vertigo is the worst get well soon
UghâŠvertigo. Have them do an auto immune blood test
Money doesn't make people happy, sane, right or of high repute. Criminals and perverts abound in the rich.
If you're interested in the story of Evelyn Nesbit, check out the book, American Eve, by Paula Uruburu. Evelyn lived in nearby Northfield New Jersey at the later part of her life. Her house is still existing. Fascinating Story. Thanks for posting.
I have that book! It's well worth reading!
What a story!!! The ladies & gents were so handsome them, and Iâve always loved their style of dressing back then. A beautiful Cemetery too. Each one of your stories are SO very interesting also. Keep up the fantastic work Ron.. youâre great at telling these wonderful old stories! TY so much for all you do for us!!! RIP Whites! đčđčđčđčđč
As history shows us, the privileged, wealthy, and entitled in this world more often than not get away with their crimes.
Still true! My Gpa had an affair while married to my Gma (several actually) anyway, one night at a bar the lady was bothering him and hanging all over him sloppy drunk. Not very gentlemanly, he gave her a good shove backwards. She lost her balance and hit her head on the corner of the bar. To make a long story short, she died from her injuries. My Gpa was a Mafia guy and owned several businesses so he was very wealthy and well known in the community. He went to jail for a few months but ended up getting pardoned by the Governor of our state. I have the actual paperwork. Itâs ridiculously unfair to that poor lady but fascinating nonetheless. Just because he was family doesnât mean I agree with it. I hope she is resting in peaceâŠ.him too now.
YES, 2 Tier system đ„
Wow, Evelyn was a beautiful lady. Great video Ron, thanks and God bless you.
Have heard the story before, but not with such detail. Well done Ron!
Can't wait for this story!! So glad I found this channel. Been binge watching all day.

Canât wait! Iâve always been fascinated by this interesting story. Looking forward to joining you and The Gang this evening, Ron!

I have a lot of pet friends and some have gone
Mr Ron never does a bad video!! Fully informative, historical, accurate n interesting!! For me, personally, it was exciting to get to see n ocean!! Living in Colorado we don't have n ocean. All my life I have been surrounded by beautiful mountains. To get to see a real ocean is exciting!! It's scary not seeing what's on the other side! It's like the water drops off n there is nothing there!! Thank u for a job well done, Mr Ron!
I have been reading about this story! Cant wait til tonight
4 h du matin pour moi ! je vais montĂ© le son đ
This a really good story. And how you reiterate all the facts in sequence with your memory is beyond me . Keep up the great work Ron. đđđ
Reminder On
I was obsessed with this as a Teenage years ago, Thaw has buildings in his name at the U Of Pitt, the family at least. I always remember there's always a Pittsburgh connection to that. And I still think that Evelyn was quite the Striking figure, you could understand why she captivated people and why all this happened. The Original Crime of The Century, until Summer of 94. Also have a book suggestion for you The Invention of Murder, by Judith Flanders, I think you would find it to your tastes. Bang Up Job as always Sir. Thank You and I appreciate your abilities!
2am here in UK and I'm going to stay awake and enjoy this!đđŹđ§
Good call !! Enjoy
Great job telling that convoluted story. Creepy simplified and interesting. Iâm blown away by the beauty of that cemetery, the ornate trees are amazing. RIP to all involved.
Thatâs a really pretty cemetery. And the story! Thanks Ron!
Liked the walk with you and this famous story. Pretty heady times in the last half of 19th century. Titans of industry ran rough shod over society.
Thank You for ALL you do bringing The Dead to come back to life God Bless you and your family Thank you what a wonderful thing you do especially The Beautiful yellow roses fixing Head stones your an honerrable soul
Have the reminder set
Morning from Melbourne Australia đŠđșâïž
Good morning!
Good morning down under ..my dad was there during WWII he said he never met such nice people!!
Reminder set. đ
Another great story Ron. Thanks for all you do.
We are so glad you liked it đ
I just love your show. I think cemeteries are very peaceful. Iâd rather spend the day relaxing in a cemetery maybe with a good book more than Iâd like to go to a party with a bunch of people. Seriously. And you treat everyone past and present with such respect đ»
Beautiful, well-kept cemetery. Thank you for this story. I love seeing the tombstones and wondering what the peoples' lives were like. What were their hopes and dreams? Did these come true for them? But back to the story, poor Evelyn being entangled with two sex offenders both of whom managed to carry on crimes because they had money. Glad she moved away and started over
Those b/w photos of everyone is haunting to me. Hair combed straight back w/goatee, just like today. A+ They are all looking right at the camera.
Great story telling as usual, didnât know about this story but really was crazy creepy.
Say Ron, if youâre ever in New England, you can visit the site of the Deerfield Massacre in Deerfield, MA. Occurred on Leap Day Feb. 29, 1704. Native raid on settlement with 56 dead and 60 taken captive to Montreal. Dead were buried in a mass grave in the old cemetary. Museum has a door with hatchet marks still in it. Story can be found on Wikipedia under âRaid on Deerfieldâ.
Love your channel. I used to visit graveyards starting in 8th grade with my BFF. I love history and loved to read the gravestones and was quite intrigued. I too lost a daughter in 2018 to acute leukemia. I've studied Heaven..NDE etc after she passed because I was so interested in where my daughter is after she passed. You really do a great job telling interesting stories and almost taking us back in time with your great storytelling abilities. I look forward to every new video you post. Thank you for making this channel for all of us to enjoy!!
Absolutely love your channel Mr Ron. My late Mum used to take me to cemeteries in New Zealand when i was young. So i have vivid wonderful memories forever. Keep the fascinating history stories coming. Julz
This story is so interesting. I'm glad you did a video on it. This cemetery is beautiful how they have it all set up, and the gravestones are so cool to look at. RIP to the White family... Stay safe out there Ron.đđ
Iâve always been drawn to Evelyn Nesbit and her story. So it is even more interesting to see it from the side of the men who took advantage of her.
Once again, you have hit it out of the park with this story!! Intriguing story and beautiful cemetery.
glad you liked it Cheryl "with the big hat"!! lol
@@FacesoftheForgotten LOL
Hi Ron, thatâs a really beautiful Cemetery, so well kept, money talks doesnât it Ron, he had a great life in prison. Iâm glad that Evelyn had a good life in the end, a long life too, thanks Ron. Xxx
Fascinating story! I recall how this incident was depicted in the movie "Ragtime." (Great film!)
Always thought you had a wonderful voice for narration Ron and now we know you sing like an Angel as well! lol Great job all around! Thanks for another good one.
A very intriguing story about Stafford White and his family. I love those beautiful headstones. Glad you didn't forget your torch đŠ Ron. That is a commodity tool have with you, and us cemetery historians at all times. Safe travels my friend đ.

Loved this Ron. TY. Excellent as always. Much Gratitude from the UK đ
I followed this story years ago. There's a book abour Evelyn Nesbitt by Paula Urburu. Also on you tube, there is a short snippet of Evelyn Nesbitt performing in her later years. I could put the link here with your permission? â€ïž
Just wanted to comment on your thoughts about CA. My aunt was buried near Los Angeles. Her coffin was placed on top of another coffin. This is due to lack of space. There is no monument as it is first buried and first with a monument.
I'm glad you made the trip. I was happy to see this. I read the book "The Girl on the Velvet Swing"...or something like that, so I was really happy to see this.
Thank you Ron for this video
Ron thank you for being such an inspiration. I have noticed many times after watching an episode I feel uplifted and wanting to be productive and creative. đ
I love that you say torch instead of flashlight! Great story, would love to see all of the different architecture in Chicago!
Thank you for this compelling story. There is a novel by E.L. Doctorow called "Ragtime", wherein I first heard of this tale. Keep doing what you do so well!
Thanks for another amazing video
Another great job, as always!
I just want to thank you for your wonderful program. I recently found it and I can't stop watching. I love how respectful you are to all the graves you visit. Thanks again for another thought provoking video. Will be googling til the sun comes up. Especially Russel Thaw, Evelyn Nesbit's son who was named on the poster. Keep story telling !!
Well done Ron! Iâve heard or read about their story a couple of times but Iâve never seen that picture of Henry Thaw in prison with his brass bed and eating off of a white table cloth! You have added information that I hadnât heard about! So thank you!
This was a great story on people I mostly never heard of! Thanks for sharing this great story!
Hi Ron! My, you do get around! This story is even included in Cyril Wilson's Encyclopedia of Crime! So I'd even heard of it DownUnder : )

Makes you wonder how much of a part her mother had in this. And it breaks my heart to even think this!
Ron u are such a stellar storyteller! U bring the forgotten to life once more!
Very interesting to say the least! I love your gift of storytelling. Even when the stories are familiar, your research reveals more information and brings "life" to the stories of the dead. Your little singing made me chuckle too đđ€. I find each video so intriguing as we also learn a little bit more about you and your accomplishments as well. Thanks for another great one!
