  • In this video I show you how to use an ALPS MD-5000 to print with white ink. This is very useful for printing decals for your Hot Wheels Customs.
Big thanks to Dave at Toy Polloi!! Check out and Sub to his channel!!!

For simple few colored graphics, you might check out InkScape to convert your raster image to a vector image. Vector will give you cleaner scaling without the stairstepping that happens scaling raster images. I am a complete novice at Inkscape but I was able to convert a small raster image easily and was able to scale perfectly down to the size I needed. Thanks for posting these awesome vids! I keep thinking I might try something like this one day but honestly I will probably just keep appreciating guys like you and Marty posting your vids :)

My partner works at a big award/medal store and they use a giant commercial version of this sort of machine to print in color on 3D shapes made from glass and resin. That machine costs more than a new car, but stores like that might be willing to print a small design onto a transparent transfer sheet for a low cost, making the technology available to hobbyists. Worth looking at if you're in a city large enough.

That's nice, however there's a HUGE problem with these Alps products. They stopped doing ANYTHING related to that technology in 2015, 'cuz they tried to sell it to everybody and almost no one wanted such technology. So, while right now it may be easy to get those cassettes to replace the used ones, as time pass, it'll become more difficult to find such products and the prices will rise.

The exciting thing is that they also print metal inks, gold, silver, copper...
The purpose was probably small print shops, but I know that florists also use them to print on ribbons.
The printers were however probably competition for large printing houses and I have read that there were these still further in larger format where the printer then cost over 50000 $

I have one of these old printers, but the Mac version, from 1997. I haven't had a computer with a SCSI port for more than 15 years, though. I think it probably still works, but I'd need a dedicated relic to run it. That being said, the graphic should be redrawn with vectors. Photoshop can do it (with the Pen tool), but Illustrator excels at this. I don't think that you need to go all the way back to a floppy drive system to get the art you need.
Also, that printer will hold onto your print, so you can change cartridges, and print additional colors in precise registration. It can also print on a variety of thicknesses of material. I was able to print on 10-point card stock.
Don't bother with the metallics other than silver. You can color the silver into anything with overprinting the CMYK inks.
It's a terrific printer in the right hands. Thanks for the nostalgia. Damn, I miss using my ALPS.
(Full disclosure: I've worked in Graphic Design for 30 years and have access to these tools and skills. YMMV.)
