The takeaway from this is the simple fact that technique and skill are not as important as heart and soul. A truly great performance like this from someone who delivers every word and every note from their own pain or their own joy will just rip your heart out.

I've been all over this video since it suddenly appeared, which, got me to dragging out the Salesmen and Bernadette for repeat listenings. Conclusion: It's a creeping masterpiece. Parade just one of many excellent tracks enhanced by the amazing "treatments" provided by the band Lambchop. BTW -- saw Vic play in Vancouver in 1999 at a dive bar by day, nightclub at night joint. Talked to Vic after the show. He thanked me for coming...I said I drove 25 miles, not the 3000 miles he covered to get here, the thanking was all on me. "Let's call it a draw then" said Vic with smile.

Still miss Vic, he was a genius songwriter, one of a kind live performer, and even with all of his personal troubles a deeply soulful and lovely guy. I can't recommend the incredible memoir Kristin Hersh wrote about Vic and their friendship enough, it's a very poignant and utterly beautiful warts and all read. Worth seeking out even if you didn't know vic at all or aren't really familiar with his music! Gonna go play Vic songs for an hour or two now and enjoy a little fresh air. Thanks for featuring him on your channel Michael, it's always nice to see people remember him and others discovering his music!

I got to know Vic a little. I used to work for his record label in the early and mid 2000's. He was a really kind, soft spoken guy with a very witty, sarcastic sense of humor. he could be really dark and short tempered though, as well. But he had a really generous, kind heart. So saddened when he took his life- but I can totally understand why he did it.

I live in Athens, GA and was playing during the early 90's. Vic was always around playing. I know his sound seems a bit weird...but there was alot of this crazy type of sound in Athens, Ga back then inn the bars. Widespread Panic was all the rage then too. We played ROCCK music in my band, but this alternative sound was everywhere. You could see it at the 40 Watt every night and some of the other bars. That period of time was really crazy here...best times of my life playing and running amok around in the insanity...playing rock star LOL

Had the fortune to live in Athens through the 90s. Must’ve seen Vic at least 20 or more times in various settings. Always a good “interesting” time even when he or we were all too wasted to know what a good time was! Saw him and hung out a little at what turned out to be his last show in Austin in early December 2009 with more or less the band in this video. Vic remains at the top of American musicians. I love your comment, “I don’t even know what I’m watching but it’s mesmerizing”!

vic chesnut inspired live‘s singer ed kowalczyk songwriting. on the mtv unplugged show in the 90s Live played vic chesnuts song supernatural, which is one favourite song for me in this great performance, which had a strong impact on shaping me as a musician and a person. i still love the intensity and lyrics reflectiong on existential topics. vic has got his on story with a sad ending, but he is embedded in rock‘s history via inspiring big artists. @MichaelPalmisano Vic's been my favorite songwriter for 30 years so i'd love to hear additional reactions just because it's very exciting to get analysis of his work from musicians, and guitarists in particular, rather than critics, who usually don't say much about his guitar playing except to call it "minimal", which is a cop-out. in particular, check out his solo on the song "Bug" and just his beautiful playing on songs like "Gluefoot", "Supernatural", "Withering", "Wrong Piano", "Thumbtack", "Sad Peter Pan", "Fish", "Lillian Gish", and "Swelters".

I used to see him often in Athens, GA. The joke was always that they handed out a razor blade with your ticket. Talented fellow but dark and troubled for sure.
