Bucharest inhabitant here. I can tell you that Ferentari got it's "fame" during the '90s to the mid '00s, back when almost ALL the neighborhoods were more dangerous. Nowadays it's not that dangerous anymore, especially if you go in broad daylight. Sure, it looks like crap and it's full of poor people, addicts, prostitution but the criminals are more reluctant now to attack random people passing through their hood. Also if you don't flex expensive stuff, the chances of getting robbed are very low. Still, I wouldn't venture there on foot after midnight.
This guy seems an idiot wich made this video
Romania is a criminal friendly country. A criminal with a criminal record does not need a visa to have unlimited access to the country. And you still want to join Schengenzone. You must be mentally ill.
I second that.

I’m an Englishman living in Almaty, and spent time in Odesa, Yerevan, Tbilisi, Bishkek and Moscow…and I can say that’s just how it is. Looks grim and is pretty grim but it’s nothing too ghetto. Just drug addicts and poor people…no proper gang stuff.
To be honest I feel more intimidated in my home city of Birmingham in England in the wrong area.
The brutalist architecture is foreboding but inside you just have babushkas watching out for your safety lol
I'm an Englishman living in Sydney Australia and can confirm (as an ex-Brummie), Washwood Heath, Aston, Handsworth, Nechalls, Castle Vale, Small Heath and Chelmsly Wood in Birmingham England, are suburbs MUCH worse than what I just watched on CZcams...
There is some utter depravation in the uk. particularly in the north of england. skanky nasty shitholes. 9 of the 10 most deprived areas in Europe are in the UK.
Yeah it was a bit over the top the trepidation…I went alone to Ozone Park in Brooklyn a long time ago and it way more extreme than this!
As mentioned, I live in Sydney Australia and the 'bad' suburbs over here, DO NOT COMPARE AT ALL with some of the shit-hole suburs back in the UK. Ozzies don't know how good they have it... @@taianeville4880
England is an absolute shithole
52 year old Canadian woman living in Bucharest, landed originally in ferrentari for a couple of months, but did only drive through this specific area - it looked scary!! However I never felt unsafe and ventured out at all hours. I guess if you’re looking for trouble you’ll find it but in my opinion Bucharest is lovely.
what were you doing in ferentari for a couple of months?? coming from canada?
You’re just dumb men say don’t do it it’s dangerous you a weak defenseless woman says no it’s ok I did it.

As a Romanian born and bread in Bucharest :D
- Ferentari is not a suburb, it is a neighborhood. I think there's some political and economy implications. A suburb would be administrated by a local mayors office. Ferentari is administrated by the Bucharest General City Hall and also the 5th District City Hall. The 5 district also administrates one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the city - Cotroceni.
- 5:49 we have some even older trams (the Tatras) still woring on different lines :D
- 7:33 - that long ass tin pipe is either an exterior garbage shoot, or a chimney tower for a restaurant located at the ground floor. If it's a restaurant they are oblidged by law to release the smoke above the building, and not into their windows :)
- 10:51 - many of the residents in those buildings are drug users and ex-cons, illiterates, people who have turned their back to the system and the system turned its back to them. They live day to day, doing oddjobs to survive (foraging scrap metal, petty crime and so on) . Unfortunately these people exist in many countries and a city as big as Bucharest will naturally attract them.
I hope you enjoyed your time in Bucharest :)
The General City Hall only administrates protected areas (Ferentari is not one of them) and main avenues. I think it lands on District 5 entirely. Everything else is just spot on. Too bad this area got stuck in time, it has been like this since forever.
I love those trams xxx
What you recomend to us when we come to visit bucharest
Australians refer to neighborhoods as suburbs.

Heyo, I have lived there for most of my life, to be exact in the big block shown at 05:23, for almost 23 years. My parents still do live there. Now, they have let me live in their studio which was bought back in the 90s, when retail prices weren't that crazy, situated in downtown Bucharest. They have kept it hidden it from me, to not let me think I am too much of a privillage, I guess. This studio was used to rent, and by being situated downtown, now they kinda give me a chance to live in much of a better place after I left home, finished school and started working 🙌
I know I am lucky lad, because rent prices/apartament prices in Bucharest have even passed central areas in some cities in Western Europe. Btw minimum salary in Romania is like 350 euros and the average rent in Bucharest is roughly 300 euro, where the average salary is around 800-900 euros.
It was so funny seeing you taking 323 bus, because you know, that was my bus like 😂, been taking it all my life from the block to metro station or wherelse. Seen lots of crazy shit in that bus, like people fighting, opening doors while the car was still running, loots of roadmen and vagabonds using bus as a place to sleep for a few hours, avoiding winter's cold...
Ferentari is a rough neighbourhood, indeed, but you can also meet interesting and kind people, not only drug addicts, pimps, smugglers, mafia and roadmen 😅 Also, on some streets around the places you walked, you have like crackhouse-crackhouse- 2 miliom euro house- same- crsckhouse. The distribution of wealth is highly unregulated in this neighbourhood and so visible.
Even if you kinda missed its atmospheric vibe populated by manele playing out loud, I think you guys have an insight now hehe.
Thanks for taking time to say hi to my neighbourhood 😎
I really enjoy reading the comments from people coming from these neighbourhoods. Thanks for taking the time to type this. I think I grew up in poverty but poverty is a state of mind, it's a lack of resources that often the problem but human beings are creative.

I was there 2 months ago.. was a boring country and like stepping back in the 90s. Don't know how u rate it
Yes aus is terrible these days lol
Romania is one of the safest coutnries in the world actually, the first 5 biggest Romanian cities are in top 100 safest cities on earth, Cluj-Napoca is around 14, Romania is even 2 times safer than Germany, let alone USA.
@@danielrichardson6577 how's AU terrible? Haven't visited AU, but from the internet and media, I'd say it's far more civilised and with better public infrastructure than Romania. As a romanian, from a government POV, I can say we have politicians that could set world records for corruption, and education and healthcare are Ferentari like compared to AU.
I am from Romania and discovered you not long ago. I only watch the episodes about bad areas you go in. When we were watching the Spain episode with bad neighborhood, my wife said: "He should come and visit Ferentari if he has courage". Man, you are something special. To go there alone as a foreigner. came from Romania a week ago. and i got to say, it's such an incredible country! loved Transilvania especially! even thinking about moving to Brasov!
Made it actually look like more dangerous than it was. Sure it`s not a very nice neighborhood, you haven`t seen the roughest part of it either, but most people are nice and trying to get by, it isn`t full of gangs and criminals.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Only romanian person would say that u can see its ghetto n it was rated top 4 most dangerous. Romania known for pickpocket the thieving cowards. Place looks like a dumpster
Exactly what I was going to say, he hasn’t seen the worst part of it😂 my dad had an aunt who ended up in a studio in ferentari after some bad deals she made, and I went there with my dad a few times to help her out with stuff. That place was way worse when apparently it was still not the roughest part! But the amount of garbage, and the lack of metal.. there was a block with no doors and no railing, everything that could be stolen and scrapped, had been. But in terms of safety, it’s still pretty safe if you mind your business. Probably safer than all cities in America 😂 It’s just not pretty
90% of ex soviet countries are like this ...
According to the Global Peace Index, Romania is a peaceful nation, even making it one of the safest countries in Europe. Soo is not that bad in Ferentari as it seems. All the thives are gone in Vest Europe 🤣🤣🤣
Gypsies Will continue to be the fault of thievery in europe forever, us romanians get a bad name because of them
There, Gipsy clans fight each other. Drugs, prostitution and ATM. Now you know
What you just said was so obvious at the start of the pandemic, when they returned home. It was a circus, i felt so bad for the western coutries that had to deal with them. 😂
Funny thing, Romania is safer than western europe tbh, even in the Bucharest area, compared to other big western capitals or cities, people are actually friendly and mind their own business. Ferantari and Rahova was dangerous in the past. Now it tends to be a lot chill.
👏👏👏👏👏
True
oh do you know why? because all the Roma folks are in Italy busy making money there
I think the author maybe it looks more scarier than it actually is. Yes, those places look grim and dirty. As you could see no one was yelling or trying to approach him they were just minding their business. Most of the people living in those places are not bad people they are just poor.
This is true x

As a Romanian Australian this is quite funny, my family lives not far from there and i go there often to stay with them, and although this is a dangerous place especially if you don't speak the language, for me this isn't anything too crazy as it just looks like another typical poor neighbourhood, but for an Australian or Westerner that has never been in Eastern Europe/Romania or seen something like this, i can understand the reaction.
No it does not look like a poor neighbourhood, only the gypsys live like that and such povery is extremly rare in Romania nowadays. Today's Romania has the same standard of living as Portugal, just slightly lower than Spain.

You have this in a lot Eastern European countries. Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia. Go to the old parts of Eastern Berlin and you’ll be amazed by how shitty it looks. In all honesty, these neighborhoods are usually way better than you might think. Never felt unsafe when visiting these areas. Looks horrible, but it was a way of constructing homes back in the days of Communism.
Edit: sorry guys I meant Eastern Bloc. Living in The Netherlands, we are also used to calling countries east of Germany ‘Eastern Europe’.

@@Milosz5013 there's a big difference from the safety of a country and a neighborhood. Romania and Eastern Europe are generally safer , no immigrants what-so-ever. Even the gipsies are ok , they wont bother you if you don't look fancy. just a low % are making trouble .Ferentari is a dark place , even Taxis don't take you there through the night. There is a story i know , that a taxi went on "Liverzilor Street" and basically people stole the car.
It's great to hear that you haven't got any trouble , but obviously is dangerous . Don't induce the idea that is safe to go on sketchy streets in any country.
When I travelled through Hungary and Czechoslovakia back in the early nineties it was the first time I could afford to sit down and eat real meals in months. I loved those countries.

I live in Bucharest and I know Ferentari s reputation but I never been there. Judging just by the news on tv (not an accurate metric, agree) the place is left just with the reputation as I saw on tv no major crimes committed in there (such as shootings and stuff which are anyway extremely rare in Romania so if it happens will make Breaking News) and as we all noticed, with junkies and poverty.

You’ll find this type of brutalist architecture all over the eastern block of Europe. Some of these places might even not be too bad but they just look gloomy and unsafe. I think you’ll be fine as a tourist, the mafia usually just leaves tourists alone because their business model isn’t robbing tourists but racketeering and all the other traditional criminal forms of generating income.
The only place I’ve ever felt unsafe was in Casablanca, Morocco. When you have groups of 10 men following you asking for money, then getting on a bus full of football hooligans, it’s definitely a bit intimidating.
👏 yes. I am from Bulgaria and it looks sketch but u will be fine

OMG! That's just scary you must have got out because you posted. One brave lad 😅
This doesn't even look that bad, LOL 😅 I mean for a Roma neighborhood, this actually looks quite decent, for the most part. Come to Stolipinovo, Plovdiv in Bulgaria next time, if you want to see a real Roma ghetto.
Literally just googled it after reading your comment. Woweee 😳😳😳
yea and this is said to be the worst here, Romania is a decent place. I love it here
Ahaha exactly it kinda looks like every other urban Romanian neighborhood up until the 10th minute mark, and he was already shocked ahah
The rest was rough though
Lunik 9 in Kosice is way worse than this
@@Joe-jq6dk100% dude. I wouldn't venture into Lunik 9 without a local gypsy guide.
Spanian should have his own Netflix show
Thumbs up for your videos. In my opinion, what gives your videos value is your perspective which was constructed from, I'm guessing, living most of your life in these underprivileged environments. I also grew up in poor Melbourne neighbourhoods but luckily for me, my dad would take on an army alone to make sure I didn't stray towards the wrong crowds. He was a thug of a man, albeit in a one-man gang that passionately despised drug use and criminality. I've walked through all the poor neighbourhoods in Bucharest and Iasi dressed in shorts and a t-shirt wearing a Tag watch (I mention this to show that I could be a target), but no camera as I like to blend in as a person just meandering about in these very poor areas. Yes, these neighbourhoods are extremely poor and very sore to the eyes, but in terms of danger, day or night, excluding drug use, I felt far safer compared to many neighbourhoods of let's say Athens, Rome or Barcelona, and even some underprivileged suburbs of Melbourne. What your camera captured was the manifestation of some people/areas being left behind during a 30-odd-year transition from one polar opposite political/economic/socioeconomic system to another. When you feel hopeless, you become hopeless. When one has to rummage through rubbish bins that contain the rubbish of the poorest people in Bucharest, you immediately appreciate the circumstances these people are in and possibly accept that the neighbourhood could not look any different. “Poverty is the worst form of violence.” -Mahatma Gandhi
When you're hungry, you're drug addicted, and there's scarce welfare, you're perpetually experiencing the violence Gandhi referred to. Considering this violence the people of Ferentari have/are experiencing, the literal violence they exact on others is surprisingly extremely low. Take care, bloke. Keep rockin' on.
Loving your videos Spanian! Can you go and film in the Brazilian Favelas? That would be mad.
