Romania, Village Life in Transylvania

- A beautiful little documentary of village life in Gyimes, in the South Eastern Carpathians in 2018. Ancient, vernacular, small farm-houses line the stoned side roads on which horse-drawn vehicles carry logs, hay, stone and people this way and that all day long. Most people live by small-scale farming producing their own honey, cheese, bread, veg and fruit, milk and meat. Water is always from the well, pure, sparkling and cold. Cows and sheep wear bells and high above the village the mountain meadows hum with insect life while the extraordinarily rich flora remains untouched by sprays and chemicals.
Szekler people, Romania's Hungarian speaking minority live in Gyimes, which now lies within Bacau county. The history of the area and its association with Transylvania, is very complicated .... I am no historian and apologise for any errors I have made.
Enjoy the film, all taken with a little, hand-held Panasonic HC X920.
I love this style of documentary as you didn't tap the glass at all. You just let things happen. No show, no performances. Just life. Thanks for sharing this with us!
that's exactly what I try to show ... life as it really is. Thank you.

my wife and I are from Sydney, Australia and in August 2018 on our way back to Australia we spent 2 weeks in lovely Romania, 8 days walking village to village and staying in local houses. A wonderful experience with warm friendly people
I bet you had the most wonderful time there ... friendly people and all very interesting and different.

Noel. I have a question for you. If you lived here, what do you guys do with the pigs, sheeps, cows, horses, chickens and all the animals during the bitter winters?
@@adisam4116 i think i want to sell those weak animals before the winter comes. And some of them, i wanna kill them, consume for food. The owner of that animals know the strategies already for the welfare of the animals. So why not me. I lived in a tropical country...i dont know.. Give me time to research on google... Hehehehe just kidding.
@@adisam4116 I think they built some separate and safe warm places for their animals and stock some food for them too
@@adisam4116 I am from Romania, so I know it is not uncommon to held animals also during winter time. :) You won't buy another cow every year. The peasants make stocks of food for the animals so they can feed them also during winter time.

I was a country boy from Serbia. My village was less remote and a bit more modern and agricultural. I remember milking cows, feeding pigs, running and playing all day outside. It was nice 90s childhood.
Same I was helping my dad in the farm in the Philippines they worked so hard in the farm at the same time teaching. They sent me to the U.S. Now I have 15 years to retire and want to go back to the same life in the country side. I'm glad there's still some countries like this in Europe. I thought Europe is all Modern stuff...Luv Romania. I was Miss Romania in high school during United Nations day. I never forgot the costume I wore like a Romanian lady.😊
I'm still visiting that place two, tree times a year. Some of my relatives are still there but that's now a very different place, dead, just few kids and old people.

People spend their whole lives looking for heaven, or trying to get there, and a little slice of it exists right here in this documentary. I've been to Romania and some people would criticize these people as living in poverty, or undeveloped. When really they've managed to hold on to something that we have all lost . My soul has never felt more complete than when my feet are on this land. This video captured this Essence so well. Thank you for sharing...
I think you understand how precious is their way of living ..... tough but beautiful.
I love this way of living i just live like that.
Christopher Zook ... I agree Christopher. I have never been there, but wish I could. Perhaps one day, I can afford it. Airline tickets are just crazy.
This reminds me of growing up on our family farm. I miss those wonderfully simplistic, beautiful days. Makes me cry.
All of this, all of it is so very close to my own childhood. The horses, cattle, scythes, mountains, countryside. Oh, I can close my eyes and go there, even if for a little while.
I want to travel the world. Maybe I’ll find someone who shares my dreams.😇
Took the dna test...and was surprised to have a little Romanian in there.
I stay in N. India, in the Himalayas. This lifestyle you will also find there.
Though a simple one, does not mean easy... but there sure is something magical about it.
This reminds me of when we on summer holydays visited the countryside in Norway in the 1950s. Tiny roads, few cars, cows, sheeps, horses to be seen along the road, people doing their work by hand, quiet landscape, a realy strong contrast to the life of today. How I still longing for it.
Stories and pictures of my happy childhood when every summer I could hardly wait for the school year to end and to go to my grandparents in the countryside ... To be with cattle, work in the fields, gather hay and simply be a part of nature in the true sense of the word. From this distance I can say that this is a recipe for a happy and long life. My village is more beautiful than Paris :))))
such happy memories ...
Beautiful 🥰
Awesome memories. For me, it was my mother’s home place, and my aunt and uncle were waiting for us to come for the summer. MANY summers, day school got out we were already packed, until the day before school started again. And weekends during the school year. Even though it was in America, Minnesota specifically, we did almost all of the things you show. Except cheese making. But we drank unpasteurized, un-homogenized milk. We could tell which cow it came from. It tasted like the individual cow’s scent. Man, wonderful memories.
My Polish aunt looked just like that lady, early on in the video, carrying the two bags.
That guy’s a good milker.
Every kid should have the chance to grow up on the farm. Thanks for the nostalgia.

Can we hear it for the great relationship the Romanians have with their horses. As a lifelong horse owner, I know it takes kindness and trust for those horses to work in harmony with the people. I went to Transylvania some years ago and witnessed all this for myself. To watch people working together with animals and each other in such beautiful nature is a joy to see.
I love this ... so many comment on the 'cruelty' of using horses to work without having the foggiest idea of how strong and willing horses are. They are not abused nor are they kept in luxury but they are extremely important to the families that own and work with them and hence they are well looked after ... as you understand. Some of them are fabulous, strong types, the blood lines of which should be preserved.
This is a Hungarian settlement with Hungarian language and tradition😃🇭🇺✌🏻...
Well Well Well. what a wonderful documentary. I am Romanian and I would just want to say: I was so impressed by your film. So deep, so touching, so artistic, it is like a poem for this brave people, the Szeklers, a Hungarian speaking minority. Just to know for the rest of the world: The Szeklers are a Hungarian speaking group of Hungarians (Magyars) and they lived on this place for more than 1000 years ago. They are very hard working people and personally I have a very big respect for them.
Thank you very much for this documentary, it is really touched me, a Romanian who saw my country form a really interesting and artistic point of view.
That is the loveliest comment I have ever had. Thank you. You are very kind.

>>Colin McEvedy, British geographer and historian: "The Latin speaking Wallachians and Moldavians, inhabiting modern Rumania, are first mentioned at the beginning of the 14th century. Their later claim to be descendants of the Roman colonists planted there in the 2nd
century AD., seems tendentious and improbable, for the Romans' withdrawal
from [modern] Rumania ([in] 270) and the appearance of the Vlach states are separated by a millennium in which the country was the property of Slav and nomad and which is devoid of all evidence of Roman survival. Almost certainly the Vlachs came from the western Balkans."
These words are aptly corroborated by the French historians Pierre George and Jean Tricart in their book: L’Europe Centrale: - Peuples de I’Europe centrale au XIe siicle).🇭🇺✌🏻Colin McEvedy angol földrajz- és történelemtudós szavai: “A modern Romániában lakó, a latin leánynyelvén beszélő havasföldiek (Wallachians) és moldvaiak (Moldavians) először a 14. században említtetnek.

Church bells ringing is such a pleasing sound to listen. What a beautiful country, Romania.
Gosh it reminds me of my Grandfather and how he worked on his small farm in Norfolk. Milked cows by hand, working with nature instead of against it. Grandmother's home made bread, cheese and butter. Preserves, fresh lemonade.
Field mushrooms growing around cowpats. Fresh rabbit. The early starts to the day and early nights. 10am every morning Bible reading and prayers for family and country. Cup of tea with home made scones, butter and jam. After lunch without fail listen to the archers on the radio. No tv. No telephone. A simple life of hard work and satisfaction at the end of the day.
Watching this video brought it all back to me.

So its actualy bad to have high gdp right ? ...

I travelled through Transylvania for weeks with 4 other students in a beat up old van in 1966 and then with my wife in 1971, by then Ceaușescu's Romania.. Little seems to have changed, though private cars and modern lorries were a rare site then. As well as the people, the food, the flower meadows and small hay stacks there were also shepherds in traditional pristine white costumes and horse drawn vehicles in the style of tiny wild west covered wagons. I think it would on Sundays whole village would turn out in their finest and promenade up down on the village main street.
I remember fantastic meals given with generosity. It is one of the most memorable, lasting and profound memories I have.
Little has changed. A few things, like de-industrialization. The workforce is exported to Germany, Austria, etc. Romania itself has been stagnating for decades. It's stuck in time as a satrapy which is by design. Germany imports the cheap labor and fuels its industries. The puppet states languish. EU is Imperialism by another form.
That is a beautiful memory of a time gone by

Glad you mentioned this. It's good to have background on things. There is another channel I've seen recently which is mainly about a woman who lives in the Carpathian mountains in what is now part of the nation of Ukraine. They keep making a point of saying that she is Ukrainian, but she could be one or more of a number of ethnicities. There are far more people of other ethnic groups in that immediate area than there are Ukrainians. In fact, Ruthenia was part of Hungary for a millennium. I think they just started the channel as a propaganda vehicle to get more suckers to donate money to the corrupt Ukrainian government. The videos are long, and yet the woman never utters a single word. I'll bet if she did someone like you could tell what language she was speaking and it wouldn't be Ukrainian. That's why she says nothing. The name of the channel is Food Around the World.

On the one hand, I'm thankful I don't have to do hard physical labor from dawn til dusk, have modern amenities, and easy access to healthcare, but modern times have stripped away the very simple, irreplaceable parts of life that makes us truly alive; being connected with nature, relying on animals and the land, feeling thankful for rain. A really happy and soothing video. I really enjoyed it. No stress, full of life, fresh air, healthy food especially that milk and cheese. All those people have innocence in their face. I love this. once again really really good !

@Natalia Sosa :: I hope you're right Natalia, that looks like a lot of work but i'm sure i'd rather live a basic simple life like that than this rat race i'm stuck in.
@Natalia Sosa :: You should be able to chose your own wife, it's not right that your parents decide who you can marry and who you can't. I wish you the best for the rest of your life, good luck.
yes varun u r rite
@Natalia Sosa :: Sorry my bad way of replying, i know it was his parents that chose his wife so i'm guessing he was [and still is] a Muslim ?. If that's the case then you're better off without him and his stupid religion. Forget him and enjoy the rest of your life.
Lovely!
God blessed Romania with beautiful land and creatures, and they must make Him proud of them! Amen!

Well, this village is populated by Hungarians...
@@sch0146 and your point is ? We Romanians are ok with Hungarians living in Romania !
@@Soleildumon my point is absolutely neutral. Hungarians and Romanians lived in peace for centuries in Transylvania. But unfortunetly the politics of the 20th century messed everything up.
@TuaMadre TuoPadre What do you think is the same with the villages in Hungary?

Hello worlds sweet

Hello
Good morning
A lot of love and respect for our elders, who lived such a hard-rough lives to give us today's easy life style.
But one thing is noticeable, they were stress free but today our lives are full of stress.
This is a good life in 20th century, no cars no pollution all are organic. No plastics all thing's are rycyclable. Hoping Transylvania would not change their way of life. No cellphones wowwwwww, what a wonderful country 😘😘😘😍😍😍😍
Las cosas desde fuera o de visita se ven muy bien. Hay que vivir la vida rural para saber lo que es la realidad.
we are in the century 21.and yes it is a wonderful way of life
Modern technology is not curse
For mankind. It depends upon
how we use it.
Susu sangat cape tarik ,bapak seperti, tarik susu ibu pake mesin saja
Transylvania is not a country, it is a region from Romania. And we do have cellphones at countryside.
Iam from Kenya and I love the calm environment here so amazing same as my rural home Kenya 😍😍
I watched this show Kerala State of India I really liked this show very much thanks to the cameraman for your work and great respect for the same shows again
O Awesome village. I am also a villager from India. These total activities are same on Indian village. I am also doing hard working . I am also a Shepard of cows and goats. Village people are so politeness and respectful as compare to city's people. I am proud to be a villager. After seeing this video I remember myself memories of my village. This village is totally match from my village in India. Like small mountains , river , green jungles , flowers, plateau land, and so many. There is only some fun to live in the village. These scenes are very beautiful and attractive. I respect and honor the villagers. I love my village.

@Abhishek Singh ji These are the people from which the whole world is troubled. In the mindset of such people only terrorism and jihad arise. They have no effect with good and bad things. These people only go on the path of terrorism. Such people are only deadly and cancerous for the whole world. I do not know how these people were born in the religion, who do not know the meaning of humanity. The whole world is troubled by such terrorists and jihadists. Its only religion is to bring Islamic terrorism and the entire world into Islamicization. Its only goal is Islamization of the whole world.

I love Romania!! Been there two times!! Such a wonderful country.

Only these hard working, busy people are not Romanians but Hungarians. You do not see this in a Romanian village.
miáú brekeke those buildings were build by ethnic germans austrian, Hungary was just the little, retarded brother of Austria!
Free bozkurt because you stole our land and invaded us, that’s why!
@@freebozkurt9277 if hungarians, how come they speak romanian? lol
@@alphatango831 No they did not. They speak In Hungarian in the whole video. The first sentence in the video at 1:29 is Jo napot!. Is it in Romanian? No, this a Hungarian greeting. Only when they visit the Uz valley in the video (outside of Transylvania) at 11:05 the sheepherd guy speaks Romanian. And you can see the difference how the Romanians live, what sort of household they have. Dirt, unkempt house and animals. This is in clear contrast with the Hungarian household and estate shown in the rest of the video.
This what CZcams needs to share more of... Upload the cultures... Respect the times...

How hard work can make you strong. In early America too, back in the 1800's and still a little in old Amish country where they still use horse drawn vehicles still, (part of their religion), but still nice country in the Pa., Mo., Ky. mountains too. American is such a vast modern nation now it seems impossible to go back to simply times. Most could not get by a day with out their smart phones and computers, etc. This video was very nice and good to see happy people in this small nation living a full life. Great to regress back in time to reflect on the way other countries lived way back when and these people do not seem to miss all the tech, but watch out for those big tractors.
I love Romania so much
Very nice place away from cities, no pollution, no noise of factory's machines, no crowd, no traffic , no adulteration of food items, everything is organic and very very peaceful. People are simple , hard working live together making happy family. This is the real life of human being, where we can have enjoyable life closed to nature

Lucy Pembroke he said the documentary was awesome m8
the vodka wouldn't.
in my village there's a guy +90 years he cuts with scythe and usual village work... He's like your standard "developed" country 60 years old... at 90.
My summers in Normandy in the 1970s. The smell of cow dung makes me want to cry I didn't realise how happy I was then. The mists in the mornings and the smell of the sticky dahlia buds and the phlox my daddy grew. He was Paris born and bred but we would escape to the Pays de Bray in summer. The cowshed next door which smelled of urine and dung, buying the milk and my father boiling it with a glass disc that would rattle and he'd turn it off instantly... Memories! Thanks for this: a slice of heaven on earth.
Love, love, love your memories ... it was the same for me.
