Transylvania - The heart of Romania | DW Documentary

- Transylvania has a lot to offer: beautiful cities, endless forests, fascinating traditions. All of these are cultivated with great dedication by the people of the region.
Dumitru Pop, for example, works at the "funniest cemetery in the world”. His mission: to change people's view of death. He carves and paints wooden crosses for the deceased. He decides which anecdotes best commemorate the dead. Too much alcohol? A tyrannical mother-in-law? Dumitru doesn't sugarcoat anything -- and adds a dash of humor to the saddest of circumstances.
Transylvania is nestled in the Carpathian Mountains and boasts seemingly endless forests and pristine nature. In towns like Sighisoara and Biertan, imposing churches remind us that Transylvania was shaped by German culture. Among the people the filmmakers meet are two Transylvanian Saxons who are renovating their house using ancient tools -- and the knowledge passed down by their ancestors.
The largest ethnic minority in the country, the Roma, meet at the horse market in Gilau. The horse trade has been one of the most respected Roma professions for centuries. The market is impressive and puts on a great show. But it’s also a kind of family reunion. For the horse trader Costell and the market organizer Pufi Moldovan, it’s an exciting day.

I drank the cleanest and coldest water of my life from a mountain spring around Borsec, Transylvania. I also had the best sleep and appetite there due to the extremely fresh air. Spending there 10 days was priceless and felt like the only therapy that one needs from the pressure of work and city life. That summer I decided to avoid the sea, and take some real rest. Transylvania was the best decision - no stress, a truly relaxing vacation, a medicine for body and mind. I can't wait to go back to the area. Stunning, beautiful Romania.

This documentary is flawed, I’ve watched 7 minutes and I’m already annoyed about the misleading information. Cluj-Napoca as it was named Klausenburg was NOT founded by the germans, Cluj previously known just as Napoca was has been a settlement for more then 2000 years, they found remains of roman buildings in the city.
I don’t understand this documentary. What are you trying to show? Except for the part with the Merry Cemetery, what are you actually showing? That Transylvania is lost in time and backward? 'In this male-dominated blabla.' You could have talked about the beautiful landscape like the mountains, the hospitality, the fact that in Transylvania, at least in the bigger cities, they are modernizing fast, making huge leaps. You are showing horses and carriages on the road to make people believe that's the whole country. Please...
Well, this is a German broadcast show and you know how they are. All European culture belongs to Germans somehow. They are still busy trying to rewrite history and exterminate native cultures.
@@ionrus1355 why so mad girl
It's KOLOZSVÀRnot klausenburg lol
We still have Roman maps wich have Cluj and Turda (Potaisa) …. They are at least 2200 years old.
Basically what the documentary is showing is that Transylvania is represented by Maramures (which is a completely different region that was never part of Transylvania ), by the culture of Rroma people, by long lost germans who are trying to revive old traditions, and of course by Klausenburg a city founded by germans. This is utter nonsense. What about the Romanian history behind all the cities, the Hungarian heritage, and what about the Ancient Roman settlers that founded many cities in Transylvania, cities like Cluj-Napoca (Klausenburg). I am amazed by the amount of nonsense. 😂

@@mihaelaconstantin9672 Are they not allowed to show the life of ethnic minorities in a multi-ethnic region?
@@sticlavoda5632 Of course they are allowed to show the life of minorities. However, I was expecting @DW Documentary to make a professional and well-documented documentary about a region of Romania, Transylvania. A lot of people who see these documentaries online don't know much about Romania, maybe they are not even from Europe, so it makes sense that good-quality documentary explains as an introduction that this is a region of Romania where different minorities live. In the same time, the documentary mentions nothing about the big cities or the highly educated people that live there. The documentary starts by stating the fact that it is a male-dominated society, as if the Romanian society is from the 19th century. I am sorry to state, but the quality of the documentary is of very low quality.
At least they mention there are romanians in Transylvania besides the gypsies, the hungarians got completely ignored . I'm romanian, from the south, but I find this weird given the hungarians are the second largest minority and had hystorically and today a lot more influence on the local culture than the gypsies@@mihaelaconstantin9672
@@mihaelaconstantin9672 I agree, as a Romanian also, but the interest in Romania is particularly for its archaisms and traditional way of life. This is an Orientalist outlook onto our culture, but it makes sense why they would show it. They were actively looking for portraying such a culture.
The documentary talks about Cluj, shows it, and discusses the German minorities with a high respect for them, considering that the Germans themselves made this documentary. It also speaks of how those very Germans would have an interest to return to Romania on account of it's culture.

Cluj-Napoca the name Napoca is mentioned by Ptelomeu (Napuca). The first appearance of the city dates in 107-108 . In that time romania was called Dacia .
The documentary is made by Germans, so a little slip of history is understandable, I think it was intentional to state that the Germans founded Cluj. It was founded more than 1500 years before 13th century, but DW didn't care to check and ignored history altogether.
@@RepertoireCanvasno is not "understandable" 🙈
There is no connection between romanians and dacians. Also Kolozsvár was built and designed by Hungarians and Germans.
There is, certainly dacians are not equal to romanians but the dacians are the ancestors of nowadays romanians. If you choose to believe in the "albanian vlach sheperd" theory then so be it but don't spew it on here.@@yellowscreen8591
There is absolutely no connection between roman Napoca/ dacian Napuca and the medieval town of Cluj founded and developed by saxon colonists besides the placement (Napuca wasn't even on the same place with the roman and medieval towns). The roman ruins are unbothered since the IVth century which means that there cannot be the case of continuous living . When Cluj was founded, only the base of the roman city walls were above the ground. Napoca is a predecessor at best but not the same with the actual city of Cluj. And the actual name is the result of a fatasy revival designed by the communists in the 70's not an organic toponymical evolution.
The place where I was born and raised! The most beautiful place on earth!
On what roads are there as many horses as cars? This is ridiculous. Which small villages are these?

They are pushing an agenda and their skewed view, not trying to inform.
The Gilau market was like most markets a traditionally ROMANIAN and for anyone, not just a Roma Gypsy horse market. Imagine that the Romanian majority also used those traditionally ROMANIAN horses in the mountains nearby and sold them in regulated markets, for hundreds of years. The Romanians traded Romanian breed horses or cattle in that market long before came Pufi and Costel, representing a 3-4% Gypsy minority.

Disclaimer: the documentary focuses on a small bit of the rural / traditional Ardeal (including Transilvania).
It has some small misses, like saying that Maramureș is part of Transilvania, wrong, and showing a few minutes later the map of Transilvania, with Maramureș not included, correct.
But there is a big blunder, please make your research - you are supposed to keep a standard, about Cluj Napoca being founded by German settlers in the Middle Ages. There are visible ruins from the Dacian - Roman era (the city was named then Napoca), excavated and covered with a thick glass in the city centre, for everyone who is interested to see - just saying...
Leaving aside the blunder, nice documentary.
Maramures is definitely part of Transilvania… there is Transilvania proper and the region of Transilvania which includes Maramures, Banat and Crisana too. And yes, we have Roman ruins in cluj underground but the city we know today was built by Germans.
@@dacian_1346 The political entity of Principality of Transilvania is gone for hundreds of years, so no, Transilvania doesn't include today more than the historical region of Transilvania. The documentary was done this year, not hundreds of years ago.
For the other part, with variations (sometimes big ones) on it's population, surface, etc, that settlement had a continuity from it's founding, Before Christ. The German population settled there by the Hungarian crown changed, expanded, improved, developed - or any other synonyms - the existing settlement, without question. But they didn't found that settlement, it was already there, with a continuous existence for more than 1000 years at the time they got there.
@@podinamarius no it’s it gone, it always existed also under Austria as a crown etc… again all those are part of Transylvania too, I have family in Maramures and Bihor too, all of them are ardeleni, there ie no distinction between us… just like Oltenia and Muntenia are wallachia. Why you always try to change our history and identity in Transylvania? Crisana, Maramures and Banat are just sub-regions of Transylvania not separated entities!! And no, Cluj didn’t have a continuity, I’m from cluj, the city was literally non existent before the Saxons… it was not inhabited by nobody since there wasn’t a settlement anymore after the romans.
@@dacian_1346 Without repeating myself, they are different regions regardless of personal anecdotes of self-identity. It is about historical rigor, not about some kind of agenda. And this is coming from a Maramures person.
@@user-uy5to1mf7b no, you don’t understand that there is Transylvania proper ( most of the time called Siebenbürgen) and Transylvania the region. All western Romania is part of the region of Transylvania, maramures included just like Oltenia and Muntenia are part of Wallachia or Bucovina is part of Moldova.
A documentary which starts with a basically FLAWED information, is not good. Cluj-Napoca had some Saxon population but has nothing to do with them. It is Kolozsvar and predominantly founded and built by Hungarians. Everything you see today of the historic city and historic significance is Hungarian. You can find Roman heritage underground like in any other old European town…
There are other cities far away which were founded by Germans because the Hungarian king brought them in to work the fields after the mongols decimated Eastern Europe in the 12-15 th century….
While the presented people, heritage and regions are beautiful and respect for that this is just barely scratching the surface of the wonders of Transilvania. Either this should've been a multiple episode documentary or should've been better organized. (No disrespect for the people presented in the documentary, wish them all the best) Just should've been deeper.
I exepcted you to do at least the bare minimum when it comes to research, Cluj is attested sice Roman times, I am a history lover and I am trully dissapointed 😢
Known as a Castrum of Napoca and beside Turda a major salt extraction center throughout time.
Half of this is fiction. This should not be labeled as a documentary. Transylvania has nothing to do with vampires and vampire hunters.
Sadly, however much heartwarming and charming the little film is, it's not representative as a documentary. The Hungarian minority is the biggest in the country and yet it's not mentioned but once in a faraway historical context. This is my Country !!!!
With a well-structured immigration policy, combined with a modest increase in the native population, we can effectively combat poverty. One of the most promising approaches is to harness the potential of tourism, art, culture, and heritage. By promoting the unique aspects of these regions-be it through their distinctive cuisines, captivating stories, or other cultural elements-we can not only preserve but also celebrate the rich diversity of these beautiful nations. I am passionate about exploring different cultures and places, both physically and virtually. Sending lots of love from Kolkata, India.
in Romania there is good immigration policy, modest increase in native population(but maybe neutral because many flee to West) yet still plenty of poverty. poverty is always there
yes that is very sad to see....@@claug3370
The cultural matter in this case is what were the Germans doing there in the WWII? We are very interested to hear their explanations on this topic.
Don’t know when but I’ll be visiting Translayvania and Bucharest soon.
Simple living is the best form of living.
*Love this Place ❤*
all of Transylvania was built by Hungarians and Germans
I really hope all the best for Romania 🇷🇴🇷🇴 especially in this beautiful region of Trasylvania coming from the Philippines. ❤😊
Please check better the origin of Cluj at least at wikipedia. The city was founded by Hungarians in 11th century and not by Germans in the 12th century. In 1241 The city was ravaged by the Mongols so Stephen V settled Saxons in 1272 to replenish the population .
attila the hun is from mongolia. so?
Wrong, Cluj was founded by the ancient romans
That's right, I'm here for Count Dracookie
I didn’t realize how close Romanian was to Spanish until they started speaking and I did a double take of like wait do I understand them.
