  • There are men on this planet who challenge death every day to feed their families. Between the desert and the Pacific Ocean, in the region of Huarmey in Peru, stand vertiginous cliffs. Men like Purunga must overcome them.
Fishers take huge risks to catch particular kinds of fish and seafood: To get to it, they have to climb towering cliffs down to the Pacific. Purunga is one of them. Every day, he makes his way through the desert to the ocean and descends to the sea using ropes and pegs. It’s an immense test of strength that’s already cost many fishers their lives. Purunga’s had a few accidents himself. When the swell is particularly strong, the catch is sometimes meagre. But Purunga knows: the following day he’ll be back to make the descent and try his luck once again.

This 42 minute documentary on harvesting mollusks in Peru has more soul and beauty in it's presentation than most modern Hollywood movies. The story and cinematography were both impeccable. Thank you for doing it.

Awards are nice. But the reward for filmmakers such as these is not awards. It is telling stories and capturing experiences and moments. Feelings, vistas, sounds, scapes. Textures, patterns, cycles.
What is an award? It is an experience utterly disconnected from the art itself.
I don't like the idea of mixing the two. Awards are like stock options which trade on films as a commodity.
This documentary is what it is no matter what anybody says it is or says about it.
That said, they need more awards and recognition. So we can have more documentaries and they can have everything they need to be happy.

To be clear, there is no point in comparing your misery to the misery of others.
There is a point in noticing suffering, and feeling compassion for that.
There is a point in practicing gratitude.
Try to feel grateful on behalf of these folks for the things they have to be grateful for.
Imagine them looking at you and feeling compassion for your suffering because they see all the ways in which your body is free but your soul and your mind are restricted.
Maybe. Idk you. Point is the exercise and challenging your thinking patterns.

A fixed anker, a harness, gear to rapell, some prusik slings at least, a Micro traxion. They would be secured all the time. I would be happy to donate some material. I'm sure DW can hook you up with them but you'd have to invest going to Peru and donate. Maybe start a donnation fund and when you meet the goal to finance it all, go there and give them the gears. And if you're a real good person, don't film anything for your gain just minor photos of the encounter.
If you want to make it your life, live in Peru and open an import company that sell climbing gear for fishermen, you won't get rich but you might live the life you wanted.

Personally, I don't see a waste of a life when you do what you like for a living, even if that doesn't pay you so much. Sometimes I feel like I've wasted my life behind a desk, just not to risk supporting my family and when I see this type of jobs that would make me feel alive Sometimes I get depressed but thenI think it is what it is when it comes for a man to support his family. No wonder why they say a rich man is not who owns a lot but who needs the less.

What a beautiful fitting comment for these cliffs ocean fishermen. Your words fit perfectly, i feel the same. I am shocked and admiring their life. What they experience is 100 times more fulfilling and amazing than what any millionaire on a yacht and mansion can ever experience. Life has a way to give more raw and all immersion in nature to poor people who try hard than to rich people.

The capital Lima has similar cliffs, it's just insane! Peru is known for the mountain but we learned new things today!
Gordon Ramsay did a travel cooking show in Peru recently, then i learned that the hot 🌶️ were burning hot, the flavor intensified at high altitude!!! No wonder few thin slices in my chicken noodles you got to me!

PURUNGA ERES UN GÉNIO BRODER. Un verdadero atleta. Climbers, walkers and harvesting seafood. That part at around 19:00 when the guy jumps in the water and climbs up a rock, for anyone that has come close to doing that it takes a real next level skill because when the sea sucks in beside the rock you either have to be a real good swimmer or really not be holding on to a rock or even close to it since it will cut you big time and these are live cuts, meaning these cuts get infected pretty fast. Anyway. These guys are next level both in dexterity on their metier as well as being really in tune athletically with the environment they're in. True human beings.

I love the shell fisherman's reason to do what he does: it feels good, he feels alive. There is something for all of us in that choice. It is important to enjoy life and doing so involves taking risks. There is danger but the rewards are great.
Thanks for this awesome story! 🙂
