  • Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2016 | The quintessence of charming England is the “West Country”: quaint Cotswold villages with their fine churches, manor homes, and gastropubs; Wells, England’s smallest cathedral town; and the New Age capital of Glastonbury, with its legends of the Holy Grail and King Arthur. We'll finish by pondering the dramatic prehistoric stone circles of Stonehenge and Avebury. #england #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope

      @stevedl3150 Před 6 lety +47

That is, I`ll have to admit, true - notwithstanding I`m English ( England having in recent years been ruined by unrelenting over-development ).
I remember visiting St. Augustine`s Monastery, Ramsgate, Kent in January 1983. I was woken up in the very early hours of the morning and invited to what I understand was Lauds ( Morning Prayer ).
Looking out of my window into the Monastery garden I observed that it was snowing heavily, and a thick blanket of snow weighed down on the evergreens. I heard the chanting of Monks without.
The most surprising thing to me was that the journey from my room to the Church was by way of a tunnel under the road between the Monastery Cells and the church, as I followed these black hooded Monks into Lauds. It was all so Medieval like. Then the beauty of the church within....
But then there is mainland Europe, which is altogether far more fascinating a place than England, I reckon.
In 1989 I was in the City of Valladolid, NE Spain, staying at what I think was called St. Catherine`s College. A Priest gave us a tour of the place, and led us into an old Library which some workmen had found. They also found some books ( as I suppose they would, it being a Library ). The Priest opened some of the books for us, which were all in printed form. But in many parts the printed words had been crossed out and in their place was the hand-written remarks and `corrections` of The Order of Preachers. Ie, the hand written `corrections` of The Spanish Inquisition.
It shoved history - alive and kicking- right into my face.
I wouldn`t want to live anywhere else but in Europe. This is where both the old world died and the new one was conceived.

Many of the villages he visited look perfect and idyllic, but they don't look like that for no reason. Rick mentioned that you can only build out of that one type of sandstone, but that isn't the only rule. What I'm trying to say is the local bylaws, and living in a listed building, would probably drive you nuts. To live there you have to be part of the tourist attraction. I imagine it's hard to be overly private. One does not simply live in Lacock. Plus house prices are astronomical. There are places in the area that are almost as pretty where normal people can live, but house prices are still astronomical. So if you can't afford a £500k+ mortgage your choices are council house/flat (long waiting list unless you have kids), spend half your income renting, or go live in Trowbridge.

our identity and culture hasn't been destroyed yet, despite the best efforts of our dear, benevolent leaders
we're being oppressed, repressed and persecuted in our own ancestral homeland and one day there will be a backlash.
i don't know how much more it will take before the backlash finally occurs, but it is coming.
English people are of a stoic and reserved character, so it's not in us to be brash and constantly force our culture and identity down everyone's throat - but English culture and identity is there and is very much alive in the hearts and minds of English people.
when you subject a specific group of people to oppression and intentionally try to destroy their culture and identity, it's only a matter of time until they begin fighting back.
it's not over yet. we will win in the end. our ancestors resisted the Normans for decades, despite all the torture and executions. we're still the same as we ever were. we haven't changed. if need be, we can resist just as our ancestors did.
*"Now in the primitive state of the kingdom after the Conquest those who were left of the Anglo-Saxon subjects secretly laid ambushes for the suspected and hated race of the Normans, and, here and there, when opportunity offered, killed them secretly in the woods and in remote places: as vengeance for whom when the kings and their ministers had for some years, with exquisite kinds of tortures, raged against the Anglo-Saxons; and they, nevertheless, had not, in consequence of these measures, altogether desisted"*

The weather isn't as bad as its made out to be, that gets worse the further north you go.
Down in the south the weather is much warmer.
I'd say the biggest downside (or upside if you like closeness) is how everything is very compact here. Our houses are fairly small and you can never truly be more then an hour away from civilisation.

I wake up every morning thanking God that I was born an Englishman.
It’s all there in Blake’s poetry, ‘England’s green and pleasant land’. The English countryside in the summer is an absolute dream.
The good thing about England is that even if you’re a city dweller like myself, you’re never more than a 10 minute drive from the countryside.
I wouldn’t swap who I am or where I’m from for anything.

Would love to travel to the UK. My DNA heritage includes: British, Irish, French & German. How ironic! This is my 1st time viewing Mr Rick's video and I am absolutely in awe!
