- Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2016 | Arcing along the southeast coast of England, we'll travel from Canterbury (with its famous cathedral) to Dover (stoutly fortified from Roman times to the Battle of Britain). Then we'll hike the trails that top the towering chalk cliffs of the South Downs, wander into the beachy resort of Brighton (England's Coney Island), and push on to Portsmouth, whose naval heritage has left it with the best collection of historic sailing ships anywhere. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #england

As a native of Dover I feel compelled to issue a warning to you good folks... please keep away from the edge of the cliffs, they crumble and fall into the sea on a regular basis especially after winter frosts. Also walking or sitting close to the bottom of any cliff is not advisable for the same reason. Enjoy our magnificent scenery but please stay safe to visit us again.
Thanks for the warning.
In Normandy white cliffs stretch to the horizon. Also worth a visit.
I spotted it straight away too!! There can also be undercuts too which cannot be seen from above and these regularly break off.
Cliffs of Dover is breathtaking. I could only imagine the view in person!
Ah! The white cliffs of Dover.
I'm an American that the chance to visit southern England. I found it magical. The cliffs of Dover were worth it all by themselves. As a history buff, there weren't enough hours in the day. Everything was awesome including the people. London, Portsmouth, Brighton, loved it all. One of the best trips I have ever had.
im literally crying england is so beautiful
BRITAIN AS A WHOLE, IS BEAUTIFUL.
I can't get enough of English history, sites and culture. I must have lived there in some previous lifetime.
That may very well be the case !
Whatever the naysayers may suggest - there is literally NOWHERE like England.
The 1st time I visited Dover was in the early 90s while on vacation from serving in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany. I bought a new Nissan Maxima and covered England and Ireland on one big Pub crawl. I recommend Tiddly · Fox Farm Brewery. Dover was the *best* place I have ever flown kites. I'd never flown a stunt kite in a smooth, strong, continuous wind like that before. I had just switched to a Prism kite that is particularly fast and was putting on a show for a woman and what I assume were her two children. I never got a chance to talk to them because, after a minute or two, a seagull decided to fly through _my_ flight zone and got tagged by like lines. I'd recently switched from nylon to Kevlar lines, and they almost cut that gull in half. A big puff of feathers, a squawk, and a woman running two crying kids to their car. Very memorable; I wonder if the kids still think of that; I'm positive that the woman does.
As an American born and bred, with DNA from southeast England, this video is the closest I'll ever see of my ancestral homeland. Thank you 😊
COME AND VISIT ASAP. IT'S CHANGING FAST, AND NOT FOR THE GOOD.
@@MrDaiseymay I know. It's a shame how our governments are complicit with destroying our cultures. Both the UK and US are being invaded on the daily. 🇺🇲 🇬🇧 Only a matter of time before illegals will be in my small town in Ohio. Hopefully they know they better not start anything in my small town. We have protection behind every blade of grass! You guys definitely have our support! Cheers!
Every time I come to England it feels like coming home. I love it.
For how much longer will England be our home? The Makers of England, the Anglo-Saxons, are on the verge of dying out. Even the present MP is an immigrant millionaire.
I teared up at the telling of Admiral Nelsons death. I am surprised at myself. I'm a yank. But I can fully appreciate true heroes. Admiral Nelson was one of the greatest the likes of which we will never see again.

He was a diamond geezer mate. If I remember correctly the British fleet sat on the horizon for 2 years daring the French and Spanish ( Rick doesnt mention them ) to come out for a dance. I may be wrong on the 2 years but I vaguely remember the wait.
@@1984isHereNow really
yep first he gave his eye then he gave his arm then he gave his life a true hero.
I actually had a relative on my mothers side of the family who served at the Battle of Trafalgar on HMS Victory. He was Master At Arms William Elliott. I wish I knew what he looked like, but in those days only well off people had portraits done, so I can only imagine. I do know that he was a tough character in that in his position he was responsible for discipline and punishment on board, and not someone to cross. I think that his character has in some way passed down to me, or so it would appear.
What an absolutely perfect documentary! This guy is a genius: He balances the horror of war with the safety and the historic "wisdom" of our gaze 1,000 or 200 years later, followed by a large beer among red flowers and blue skies. He presents us with a vivid picture of the human race across history, without being judgmental. He allows us to make our own judgement after witnessing the long-term consequences of battles or decisions that were made centuries ago. Thank you, Rick.
Well said!
Gosh I live here and haven’t seen half of this, I’m off to Dover castle and then Brighton Pavilion, thanks for the inspiration 🙂
Marie Crowe wow

You're mighty lucky

The last sentence is a perfect summary of why Britain appeals so much to me. Sixteen visits is not enough to the lovely isle.
I'm french, England is a country I hold so dear in my heart. But the problem is that English classes (in highschool) are boring. I'd like so much talk with natives.
Well, you are talking to one now!

My mum was from Kent and I love its beauty, and so clean too. I want to go back one day. All of the UK is beautiful. Tourists think its just London but there is alot more to this country that tourists miss.
Clean 🤣🤣
Very true. I'd love to visit the whole thing someday.
I love England. I visited 8 months ago and as it turns out I'll be visiting again in less than 2 weeks. Such a fascinating place.
Thankyou
I wish I could come along. It's time for me again to visit England soon. "Keep on traveling!"
How was your trip?
@@floydiandreamscapes5145 It was amazing. The weather wasn't great while in Dover but the place was still very beautiful.
@@floydiandreamscapes5145 It was awesome.
Southeast England = Garden Of England = Sunniest part of England = True Beauty!
YES, IF TIME IS SCARCE, REMEMBER THE SOUTEAST HAS LESS RAIN AND MORE SUN---USUALLY.
It's weird watching these when you live there (canterbury)you see the city on how tourist see it, you dont realise how nice it is
Right, but don't get sucked in. I always treat CZcams travel videos with caution. They know most people watching these will predominantly be from the country. I think I've only ever seen one travel video where they said they didn't particularly like the country they were in, and I've seen a LOT. 99.999% of the time these videos will be full of praise/"amazement" no matter where they are in the world.
Quite agree Matthew, I live not too far from Canterbury and have added an 'as close to being there' virtual 4k walk through it for viewers to get a virtual leg stretch until the time comes when we can all visit with our real legs. It's surprises me how by seeing it on film makes it looks so completely special. All the best to you.
@@futurez12 I know you probably won't read this but I just have to say Rick Steves is a professional traveler. He has had a show on U. S.'s PBS station for over 20 years. He's traveled all over the world. These shows are not for You Tube. They are not for the people of that country. They are geared toward the U. S. traveler. He also has guide books and runs tour trips. Just to let you know.
I swear England´s beauty is underrated, so much about France, but English countryside is more than a good match.
Wrong side of the road 🤣😂
france has countrysides too you know
London and Paris used to be my favourite cities now they are ruined
Why do you compare the two? They’re both worth visiting
I have come to the conclusion that all countries in Europe have beautiful landscape, countryside and history. Italy is probably the most stunning country, it has everything. UK as a whole is green and beautiful.
Enjoying the Europe series in this stay home period. Beautiful England....
I’m British but live in the US and I yearn for all things British. Best place to live on earth. I miss it so much.
i grew up in the USA, native born white American, but I have been to Britain, to Oxfirdshire, Drayton and environs: it was amazing, beautiful. The older folks in the Wheatsheaf pub were easy to talk to, curious of me, as i was of them, and it was a totally friendly exchange of opinions and cultural observations. England is a magical country, I wish I'd have seen Wales, but i was lucky to get there once!
Ghaint Videos I used to to think the US might be a nice
Country to live ..but the more I read about it the less desirable it appears.
Ireland is good to, as is France, and the Nordic countries, and Switzerland, and New Zealand, among others.
You are a free person. No one is keeping you here. Go back. What's the problem?
I born un USA and grew up in england now i live un Algeria love braitish tradions
This guy is a genius: !yes ,indeed! This is the joyful way to learn English and travel . thank you !Rick Steve!
When you visit our beautiful country, please don't be tempted to lie on the edge of the chalk cliffs and peer over, there are cracks, and there are falls. Lying underneath 5000 tons of chalk can easily spoil one's holiday.
If you're talking to Americans forget it. We think the world is our playground (I lived in Brighton as an American student) xo
I recoiled in horror when i saw Rick on the edge of that cliff. Some cliffs in that area are over 500ft high.
Hmm... That's bit of an inconvenience 😌
@Wisdom Perception - No seriously. You need to be very careful on the chalk cliffs. Theyre very dangerous and crumbly. Especially near the edge it cracks. We are always warned to stay away here in Kent. It’s health and safety, not “a typical English attitude”. We dont treat people like children, England is the birth place of less government and more individual freedom. We believe everyone should be allowed to do what they want within the law.
Happy memories of English countryside after living in Italy for 56 years thanks alot, take care.
As a British viewer and subscriber to your channel, I am very impressed by your nicely produced films, especially the ones about the UK!
Thank you for uploading this video , ever since I read the poem' Dover beach' by my favourite English poet - Matthew Arnold ,I was eager to see the Dover beach.🙏🙏❤️❤️ from India.

I love the smoothness in the voice of Rick Steves and his amazing narrative skills. Beautiful video! I've yet to tour England.
I’m so happy you made this episode! I live in a market town called Faversham which has existed and has had a prosperous market square since Anglo-Saxon times! Faversham is in the county of Kent which is in the South East of England, 10 miles from Canterbury.
The South East is such a beautiful region of England. 🏴
Any hidden gems around faversham? I'll be staying a couple nights there in october!
The absolute master of the travelogue - I can't believe how much information he crams into these 25 minute films! For those of us who prefer to travel vicariously, this really is going first class.
Absolutely
Thanks to you because you allow us to visit each region of Great Britain from anywhere we are.
I'm born in Brighton and am so happy to see my city represented!
I was thinking about going to brighton but it's changed so much looks like Camden in the late 90s , everyone trying to show how individual they are but end up all looking the same ...
I live in England I love my country. Would never want to live anywhere else . We have a beautiful country from Lands end to John oh groats . Thanks Rick for sharing my beautiful country to everybody.
It's definitely the best part of Britain to live in. Wales is just depressing, and Scotland.. Well, is full of the Scottish

I must say, the music for this episode is exceptional. Really like the piano+strings cue for the Dover Fortress section, and the recorder theme for Canterbury Cathedral. Well done indeed.
Music keeps getting better. Bayeux music also excellent. Great humor in the writing. One of the best-produced episodes IMHO.
The sea is calm tonight.
The tide is full, the moon lies fair
Upon the straits; on the French coast the light
Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand,
Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.

Dover Beach by Matthew Arnold
Hi guys please check my recent video 😁
Excellent work.
One other thing, for those who may be interested, the ship ' Warrior ' was the first of a new navy, Victory was old navy, men often press ganged into service, terrible conditions and food. With Warrior, men applied for positions, they were well paid, uniforms were washed and cleaned and food was much superior, setting the tone for the modern navy as we know it today. If you have the opportunity, take a full tour around this fabulous ship, almost lost, but saved and restored just in time.
Thank you for posting this video; I was born in Brighton and have worked there as well as Eastbourne (Beachy Head) as well as many other places in the UK and Italy.
It was a real pleasure to see my home town and known areas. East Dean is stunning and I have drank their many times with friends.
I now live in the north west, the Lake District. If you haven’t done footage here you really should - it is magnificent.
God bless and stay safe and well.
The area in which I live. One of the first things we learn is NEVER go to the edge of cliffs which are often unstable.
Mr Steve never stop doing this work...they're a visual support for my students' books. Maria Luiza Rodrigues Acerbi. Thanks God for a human being like Mr Steves! He accomplishes the difference!
Really enjoy your shows. You make history a wonderful journey!
This is one of the finest episodes of this series, Rick really captures the history of southeastern England
England has so much history and if I may be so bold has made plenty of history too, kind regards from Blighty Steve glad you enjoyed our beautiful country please feel free to come again.
Rick, were really enjoying the travel through out Europe. I would love to see how individual citizens live in their towns and valleys. Thanks for taking us along. God bless! 😍😄
I have walked the Seven Sisters and through the Birling Gap to the Tiger Inn pub in East Dean. I cannot tell you how glorious a walk that is. Absolutely wonderful. When this blasted lockdown/covid is over I plan on doing it again. Oh for a wonderful cold pint outside in the sun with friends and family!!!
I’m a born and bred Dovorian, my secondary school was just beneath the castle battlements. You could do a whole episode on Dover alone. The Roman Painted House, the Bronze Age ship, history from ancient Caanti (local tribe) through the Roman invasion and settlement, via the Napoleonic wars, two world wars and onward to the present day.
Always my home and always at the fore of historical events. Great town.xx

Love the out-takes at the end, too! My husband visited Portsmouth while serving in the US Navy, so it is nice for me to be able to see it for myself. And my English pen-pal sent a post card from Brighton where I can also go sight-seeing thanks to your video,
Yes, life is so beautiful.
Walked the Severn Sisters many times, along the bottom when the tide was out and along the top when it was in. My Dad and I were even rescued by helicopter in 1956 when caught by an incoming tide. I was 10 and it was quite an experience.

It's really funny how foreigners think it rains a lot in London, when that is literally the driest city in the UK!
The UK? London is one of the driest capitals in Europe. Only Athens and Madrid are significantly drier
