Solo Through Romania's Dark Past 🇷🇴

  • 🇷🇴Deep in the heart of Eastern Europe lies the nation of Romania. A mysterious land to many with its own history of villains and heroes. And it was in search of one such polarising figure that I began a journey across this land ( by the world’s greatest train ) in the footsteps of Ceaucescu. Join me on this personal journey which I have long dreamed of making as we trace the leader’s final days in power and his ultimate demise.
Shoutout to all the friendly Romanian people I met on the journey.
The prequel to this video can be found on the Daily Bald channel.

You fill many upon many viewers with great happiness when a new video is released. I can only speak for myself but I bet many others would agree to this, we hope you do not stop making these videos. Your way of storytelling is pure & unique plus it’s simply the best. Romania has bad reputation in Europe because of the ethnic "g - word" living in Romania (youtube will censor this comment if I even spell the word), although most of them now left Romania. Mix that with the Dracula story, past communism, poverty, and 90% of tourists are scared away. The only tourists left that really want to visit Romania are the risk taking, adrenaline junkies looking for an exotic dangerous place to visit. But those too get disappointed because instead of an exotic dangerous place, they find a "normal" eastern block place not really different from, say, Poland. In the North-Western half of Romania, even people look a lot like those from Poland, or even from East-Germany.
The irony is that Romania really has quite special touristic attributes. But given the circumstances, Romania's unique touristic flavor will continue to be appreciated only by the few expert connoisseur tourists.

Really stoked to see you in Romania. When I was in college I had the incredible opportunity to go to an archaeological field school program in Romania. We took the train from Budapest into central Romania where I stayed with a Romanian family for a month in the tiny provincial town of Rapoltu Mare. While there we ate, drank, and excavated Dacian remains/artifacts with the locals. Most spoke almost no English, and I almost no Romanian, but we absolutely formed a bond. Hearing the opinions the older locals have on Ceausescu was very interesting and surprising, we were told by our American professors that he was an inherently evil presence on the country and people - I appreciate you taking the time to listen to the locals. Can't wait to see where your Romanian travels take you next. I hope you check out the decommissioned salt mines that are now repurposed into underground amusement parks. And if you find yourself in Rapoltu Mare, you have to climb Magura Uroilui - it's a landscape feature that has been well documented during the Roman Empire. Be safe Bald.

Benjamin, if you ever go to Bulgaria and you take a Bulgarian taxi cab, make sure to say the following phrase to the taxi driver: "Sasipaha ya taya darzhava" ("Съсипаха я тая държава"). It means "They ruined this country" and you'll likely be told an interesting story.

"... he randomly starts talking in German". It is a common human reaction. When you meet someone who does not understand your language, you start talking in a foreign language 'you' know. During my travels I remember speaking in English with foreigners (all over the world - including Europe) who didn't speak my mother tongue but also did not speak English. Now it is funny, but back then it was automatic.
Benjamin often says things in Urdu/Hindi to old village people of eastern ... ooops ... central Europe. Makes my day.

    1. You missed "Casa Ceaușescu" in Bucharest. It's the actual house where the Ceaușescu lived, it can be visited and because of the tunnels underneath it, the army protected it very well when the revolution started so it's really well preserved. You can even see their real pijamas on the beds.
    2. The Revolution square is not where you filmed, it's another location ("Piața Revoluției"). Today that building where Ceaușescu spoke from the balcony it's the headquarter of the Ministry of the interior. It's even a monument with the names of those who died in the revolution there.

Oh yeah, Casa Ceaușescu is really worth the price of admission. At least for me, one of the best parts was the tour guide that was a giant guy in his mid 20's with an incredibly dry sense of humor. Every time he showed us an item, he prefaced it with something like, "This is the champion of the proletariat, humble socialist servant of the people, genius of Carpathia, Comrade Ceaușescu's... four-person jacuzzi tub."
