Inside Perm 36: The Last Gulag

  • đŸ‡·đŸ‡ș Under Stalin the G.U.LAG ( Main Administration of Camps ) system spread out across what was the former Soviet Union, swallowing up citizens and foreigners from all corners of the empire. Ukrainians, Estonians, Kyrgyz etc. were taken from their homes and sent north in box cars to the camps to work away their stretches. Millions passed through the camps and many never returned home. Those camps have long been dismantled or converted into regular factories and work places and you'd be hard pressed to know that you were visiting a former camp. However Perm 36 logging camp has been preserved and so I travelled to the very edge of Europe to a village called Kutchino to visit the last Gulag and to see how the prisoners lived.

He doesn't just go to the most famous tourists sites (he does some of that and I am glad for it too). But this video perfectly shows how he often ends up in the most random, generic towns meeting the most ordinary people. This is real travel. However, Bald's videos are a complete education every single time. I don't say this lightly, but you are a treasure, a gift. When I traveled through Alexandria, Romania ,Gomel, Belarus and other cities in the region ........some of my fondest memories were purchasing a meal, candy or drinks for the precious children I met along the way. Their parents certainly can't afford to buy them a pizza or burger as often as we do in America, so it's truly a special treat for the kids. Thank you sir Benjamin for the kindness you show all the children you meet. They will remember you and so will God. :) PS: I met my wife in Bulgaria on one of my trips and I'm truly the most fortunate fella in America to have this special lady of 21 years. :) Wishing you safe travels! I tried interviewing him back then but he didn’t want to talk about it at all. I’m sure it was too painful to reflect on. Thanks for providing a glimpse of what it may have been like.
