You can see how bad the situation is in our society, when people are saying: "come on it's not that bad, junkies won't hurt you, they're just shooting heroin in front of your kid, they just throw away the injection you might step on, come on it's not that bad, i walked there once and i didn't get raped"

As a former junkie myself I can tell you that we normally don’t hurt normal people, yes there are cases where this happens and it’s sadly really common that junkies would steal from you, but most of us wouldn’t hurt anyone. Most of the time we wouldn’t shoot up in front of kids and in places where this happens, children should be there anyway. Normally we plug our needles so that no one will hurt himself on it and people that know they have transferable diseases will care about this even more.
I can only talk about the places I was in and that’s cities in the US and Germany, but I hope it’s at least partly informative and true for where you live. But I have to agree with you that the situation has gotten very bad in our society and this really need to be fixed asap

    • @barblue3
      @barblue3 Před měsícem

When someone says “they won’t hurt you” means literally that. Of course it’s something that needs to be fixed but drug trafficking and users will never end. About children seen needles and the horrid scene.. all you need to do is pass with your kids once so they know what’s going on and they can put in their brain what’s happens if you end up using substances.. and then use different streets to go about your business. You make it sound like people agree with this terrible situation but I assure you no one in the right mind does.
All over the world in the middle of the city you will encounter streets such as omonia! Get real.

A few months ago I was in Athens with friends but extended my trip so I could enjoy the city alone. Being that I am familiar with the hotel franchise, I booked a few nights at the Novotel in Omonia. Im 25 and have done plenty of solo traveling, but had no idea that neighborhood had the reputation it has. My taxi driver who was taking me to check into the hotel made me book a different hotel while I was in his cab. He told me he has a daughter and a wife and would hope that someone would suggest the same for them.
I felt real uneasy watching this, because I have seen it through the windows of that cab. your content is incredible, and I have now become a subscriber. Having seen Omonia, I have become more interested in learning about Greece's more recent politics/ history than its ancient history.

Yes I love ancient Greek history but it does seem most people stop there. People tend to neglect modern Greece like it doesn't exist. I'm sort of guilty of that. It is easy to be disenchanted with the modern world as a whole. I think it is because it is too available and the ancient past seems more magical because one cannot reach it fully like the present. But humans have always been the same by nature

As a Greek, I find it heartbreaking. Athens, especially the center is a mess. Poor lighting, broken sidewalks, drug addicts, ugly graffiti, seedy neighborhoods. The government, the mayors, don't care since they walk such streets only for election purposes. Your video is good, I had seen a similar one you made in Scampia, Naples. I remember Omonia Square in the 80’s. It was beautiful.
There was an awesome 4 storey building that was full of toys, the cafes were full of elderly men passing their time and families were everywhere.
I was in Omonia a few weeks ago and likely at the time of the making of this video. It saddens me to see the state of Omonia now and this is despite the efforts of successive governments to repair and improve it.
The fact is that Greece like so many other nations is losing its middle class. What will remain will be the lower class and the the very rich. Corruption has destroyed a beautiful country.

My grandfather bought a car in the early 50's (second hand) and almost every day he got stopped by the police. After 2-3 months of constant police searches he reached to a friend of his, policeman, to find why he was stopped all the time. After some searching, he informed my grandfather that the car belonged to a drug dealer

Thanks for highlighting the difference with Exarcheia! There are many beautiful streets in the center of Athens and around Syntagma square it's pretty safe, but Omonoia really is very scary to walk around at night. Even natives avoid it and I think that says it all. I really wish the situation changes in the future.

You just showed a part of what some people here in Greece try to sweep under the rug, bravo. As an Athenian, I can confirm that the situation is real bad. As a woman though, the situation is worse. Every day I have to go to Omonia so I can get to my job, by using a corresponding bus etc, I have been harassed so many times, so many guys just like these on your vid have stalked me, straight up on my face followed me around, approached me, try to steal from me. The worse is when the sky's starting to get darker. All you see are groups of men walking around, looking at you crazily etc, even if you're a man or a woman, doesn't matter, it's not safe. And Omonia is the CENTRE of Athens. The heart of Athens. Unacceptable that a EU city is in such condition, no wonder so many people want to leave from Athens and move on somewhere safer (people who live nearby Omonia because there are other areas in Athens that are relatively safe compared to Omonia and nearby).

The streets near Omonoia are crazy, but the craziest bit is that up until a couple of years ago, one of the drug markets of Athens was outside the Faculty of Law of the University of Athens. There were literally tourists on the front side taking pictures of the Main University building, and people dying from drugs on the side. Omonoia, a square which used to be the cultural centre of Athens 50 years ago. The place you would walk with your girlfriend, your children, your elder parents and have a pleasant time. But, times have changed. I lived in Athens for almost 2 decades, and it's heartbreaking. For foreigners that don't know, Omonoia is just the worst of many, many areas in Athens where it's full of drugs, brothels and criminality. We've come to a point that Athenians can't walk on most streets of the whole city when it's dark, because it's more likely to get robbed or attacked than not to. As a Greek Athenian now living abroad, I couldn't feel sadder.

It's sad to see how economic crisis has ruined that city. I travelled a lot of capitals in Europe and I must say that Athens is the one who is suffering the major effects of the crisis, with abandoned buildings, poor infrastructure and junkies and homeless all over the streets. That is such a shame, considering the importance this city had in the history of humanity. I live in Rome so I know what it feels like to have such an important city falling down like that, but sadly Athens beats Rome in this unfortunate battle

What is unique about the situation around Omonia square, compared to other main cities, is that Omonia is actually the very center of Athens and not some far out suburn where the cursed of the city live. Omonia in the old days, used to be the meeting point for all the people from the countryside visiting the capital and till the early '00s it was also the focal point of celebrations for big sport events (for example the Euro 2004 Greek win). In comparison, it would be as if the streets around Federation Square in Melbourne or Trafalgar Square in London were like that.. Nowadays the center of life has swifted towards Syntagma square and Omonia has lost it's past significance in the life of the Athenians, as a consequence of the rapid decline of the area.

The difference of Athens compared to the rest of the world is that it is actually SAFE to walk there, these addicts mind their own business. The government knows, the police knows, and they provide specific areas for drug addicts and dealers (of course out of the record). Addicts and dealers are also a way to drop real-estate prices in certain zones, proceed with buying cheap, then gentrify the zones and make them exclusive for high-earners and tourists. Back in 2004 when the Olympics games were held in Athens, all these guys were "moved" to some other locations so that they would not be witnessed by the world until the games were over.

They dont provide areas, they are just reluctant to get to those areas. Because if they apply security cleanliness and health measures to those areas , there are very strong militarized anarchist and far-leftist movements which are supported by media as well, and police plus the government will be labelled as fascist and against the freedoms and democracy strangely,
it is a misconception and mislabelling which gained ground in Greece as an overreaction to the military junta of 1967-1974 (mainly) , the 1980s socialist messaging by goverment secondarily, and the civil war of 1949 thirdly although less so. Also the essense of modern Greek music which is rebetiko has some anti-police songs (since they were Greek refugees and workers in the ports who made the essence of music -- but their issue was only that they smoked weed and so were searched by police not other crimes but the songs bad mouthing the police men remain, after they are mis-interpreted falsely as against all things police. Even the rebetiko singers would be on the side of the police on these occasions)

@@innosantoWhat a load of bs , the anarchist neighborhood is exarcheia and it is much safer than any other neighboring neighborhood , the people that live in exarcheia together with anarchists have protested in the past because police were leading the drug dealers in their neighborhood to undermine it and find a reason to raid the place.
I have seen with my own eyes and there are multiple photos online of police talking to drug dealers and leading them to anarchist buildings and neighborhoods so they can find a reason to raid them it is a known tactic together with policemen wearing civilian clothes with hoods burning and pillaging again so they can blame the anarchists you don't have to believe me you can Google and see the photos yourself.
You can't change the drug addiction problem in the city center by throwing them in jail since jails are full and those people will either die or cause serious commotion in the jail apart from the fact that there is drug dealing inside the jails.
The only solution is to help fund the government programs for drug addiction that help those people and then help your own society , deal with the rampant inequalities so people don't have to end up as drug addicts in the first place.
As we speak the greek government is trying to undermine the already existing drug addiction programs unifying them into 1 poorly funded one.

It’s true that there are junkies openly smoking meth and shooting up heroin on the street, and it’s dirty and there’s a lot of graffiti, but it’s not unsafe like similar looking places in countries like the US or even in France. I’m not sure why, but I was walking around every day and night, to and from the gym, to the shops etc, right by people smoking meth, and never once had anyone even say something to me let alone act threateningly. People seem to keep to themselves and maybe that’s why it isn’t policed, maybe they get to do their thing because they don’t get aggressive with others.

I don't know where you are from, but one difference I've noticed between US and Europe is that Americans treat these people like they're the problem. Being homeless in NYC is almost considered a crime. They punish them and feel cleaner while imprisoning or killing them. In Europe we do not help them either. But we also don't try to hide them in prisons. We just admit we're useless and let this problem grow bigger pretending it's no one's fault. Anyways. You asked whats happening? We all fucking suck. That's what's happening.

I didn’t watch the video but I felt 1000 times more safe in even the most sketchiest parts of Athens than I do in many places in the U.S. I love Greece., definitely one of my favorite countries and people.

I stayed here over night in 2012, just after the Olympics. Truth be told we only stayed here because it was close to the port to travel to the Islands the next day.
I have to say this was an eye opener, our taxi driver advised us to be very careful. Soon as we arrived we saw some dude shoot heroin in his genitals & had woman soliciting their services during the middle of the day. After we checked in the hotel, the four of us blokes (mid 20s at the time) decided to go for a walk in the area. Soon after we were being followed so we decided to head straight back to the hotel until check out.
This video just brought back some memories but every country has its rough parts hey. Outside of this experience I've always loved my travels to Greece, can't wait to go back.

For anyone curious, the sound and air coming from the vent at 7:51 was from the metro, the underground train of the city. There's two lines connecting in Omonoia right there so it's one of the busiest stations in Athens.
I'm Greek, I don't even live in Athens (though I've visited many many times) and the situation is pretty much a well known fact among all of us. We know not to walk through Omonoia at night, especially alone, unless completely necessary. It has been so normalized for us that it honestly was very important to see your reaction to it because, yes, having people do drugs right in the middle of a busy street is very much not normal, and it's a direct result of a declining and uncaring government.

Lived in Athens last year for Uni on a semester abroad from Ireland, I remember some poor tourist woman asking me at around 8pm once on the metro, how many stops until her hotel... I checked and her hotel was in Omonia had to tell her gently to go straight to her hotel and not walk around too much, a scary spot for someones first day in a new place!

We travelled to Greece back in 2008 for a family holiday. The internet was so new we weren’t able to do much research about where to stay. Our first stop was Omonia, by day it was tolerable but on my second night there I wanted to go to the corner shop for a gyro and the concierge advised me as a 20 something year old female I should take my male cousins with me and even then it would be a big risk. Watching this video has broken my heart that things haven’t improved but have gotten a lot worse. I disliked even the nicer parts of Athens we stayed in compared to the villages but it’s heartbreaking to see my motherland turn into this 😢

Hi Spanian great video again - me and my gf stayed in Omonoia in July and genuinely the sketchiest place we have been. The road behind our hotel was like an episode of the walking dead and people throwing things at our taxi . Our hotel had armed security and the view from our room showed a church that had been overtaken by these junkies. Crack pipes galore . We had to taxi back at night because we were advised it was so unsafe , we even felt in the day it was just as bad. Great vid 🇬🇷🇬🇷

Simple solution to get them to leave this area are “Stadium” lights that consist of multiple lighting fixtures strategically positioned around to provide even illumination across the streets. These fixtures are usually mounted on tall poles or structures surrounding a targeted area. They will disappear pretty quickly these lights are blinding.

@Spanian the underground facility you showed is one of the oldest and more traditional taverns still in existence in Athens and it has a limited number of plates every day but man they are so tasty.
The grills were you felt that hot air was coming out is the Underground of the city NOT the Metro but the old line that connects the port of Athens Pireas to Athens ending to its more northern suburb of Kifisia where the elite used to stay.
The area indeed is a hub of drugs and houses many illegal immigrants or homeless people but I have experienced more criminal areas and of course more dangerous where you risk gutted by knife.

You want him to die or something? There are violent gypsies and russian/slavic/pontioi there that wouldnt have a big issue with that. At the very least they will beat the crp out of him, and no footage left. If he doesnt have local friend/s to be accepted in there with controlled footage then he SHOULDN'T go there. He should keep going upwards from omonoia towards patisia, attiki, metaksourgeio, especially plateia vathis and all around it, just be more prepared to fight and defend cause there at night too few non criminal people walk the streets and its not junkies thats the biggest issue.. Gangs of illegal-made-legal immigrants are more active there because they are the 50% of the population in patisia currently . So a white man with a camera will have an issue at somepoint at night but won't die probably. Theyll surely follow him though.
