Mitsubishi FTO 6A12 MIVEC GPX Valve Clearance Tappet Adjustment

  • In this video I show the process of adjusting the tappets/valve clearance for the 6A12 Mivec engine.
    The adjustment is needed to remove the noisy valvetrain which affects low speed cam lobes. If your engine is tappety at idle this will help quieten it down and smooth out performance a little.
    The high speed cam is controlled by hydraulic lifters and therefore cannot be adjusted. These lifters can be cleaned or replaced if needed.
    Thanks for watching!

    super video Pamo. Did you replace any of the gaskets when you put it back together? I heard many years that you should always replace the intake manifold gasket every time you remove it!! Might have 2 engines to do this one, definitely one!! Thanks.

      @@ManSeeksCivic yeah, no idea when the engine last saw any maintenance!! Have some stuff that the previous owner got from Mike in Viamoto, including rocker cover gasket as the front (right?) bank is leaking. ATF filter looks like it was never changed! What's coming up on the FTO section might I ask??

      @@ManSeeksCivic nice one. My GPX needs a little work to tidy her up, watching your clips again on the rear suspension and brake callipers rebuilds etc. They’re working fine but need some cosmetic stuff done. Same on the front end with corrosion advisory notes on the last 2 MOT’s.

    He buddy, I want to tighten up my accelator cable as pedal feels a bit less responsive. Any way to do this ?

    • @ManSeeksCivic
      @ManSeeksCivic  Před 4 lety +1

      Look near the throttle body on the back of the plenum. The bracket that stabilises the cable can be loosened and moved to give some adjustment 👍

      @@ManSeeksCivic awesome buddy mine feels like drops of the second I take any pressure off the cable. Mind you I have done a light weight crank pulley so don't think that would cause it

    • @MrShortStuff
      @MrShortStuff Před 4 lety +1

      Think I'm going to remove light weight crank pulley as I feel that it's effecting the automatic gear box with shifting.
      It drops revs instantly when take foot off accelerator which seems to keep the car in higher gears longer but at revs of like 1000rpm so yeah I think it's to light for the automatic to keep up with :(

    • @ManSeeksCivic
      @ManSeeksCivic  Před 4 lety +1

    • @MrShortStuff
      @MrShortStuff Před 4 lety +1

      @@ManSeeksCivic I'll make a video to show what I mean. It doesn't feel like the right revs with the gears and big delay between down shift which was no issue prior to this.
      I'm going to flush trans once again at same time as AT fluid is on sale now so thought a fresh 5L wouldn't hurt at all :)

      That would make a very interesting project buddy. IMO the fto would be great with 4wd..biased towards the rear. Doesn't sound easy...maybe utilising Lancer evo bits would be an option.

    Why did you have to adjust them. Was it making a ticking noise?

    • @ManSeeksCivic
      @ManSeeksCivic  Před 2 lety

      This was more preventative but yes, if they are quite far out of spec they will tick.

      @@ManSeeksCivic mine has begun to make the noise planning to adjust them in a few days, just not sure how to to get the tappets out. I heard if they start they all tick indefinitely is that true?

    • @ManSeeksCivic
      @ManSeeksCivic  Před 2 lety

      Is yours a GPX? The GPX doesn't have hydraulic tappets, the valve adjustment is old style rocker arms so they just need adjusting. If yours is not a GPX (can't remember if the gr and GP are the same) they have hydraulic tappets that need to be cleaned. Once the noise starts it won't stop until work is done.
